The Green Bay Packers are an NFL football team headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Green Bay Packers are a member of the NFC North division in the National Football League (NFL). It is the NFL’s third-oldest franchise, having been founded in 1919, and the United States’ sole non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team. Since 1957, Lambeau Field has hosted home games for the Packers.

The Packers are the last of the “small town teams” that dominated the NFL in the 1920s and 1930s. Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun founded the franchise in 1919, but it has ties to prior Green Bay semi-pro teams dating back to 1896. The Packers battled against other semi-pro teams from Wisconsin and the Midwest during 1919 and 1920 before entering the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the forerunner of today’s NFL, in 1921.

The Packers began playing part of their home schedule in Milwaukee in 1933, until improvements at Lambeau Field in 1995 made it more profitable to stay in Green Bay full time; Milwaukee is still designated the team’s home media market.  Green Bay is the smallest major league professional sports market in North America,[a] while being the smallest major league professional sports market in the world.

With a value of $2.63 billion, the Packers were listed as the world’s 27th most valuable sports franchise by Forbes in 2019. With nine pre-Super Bowl NFL crowns and four Super Bowl victories, the Packers have won the most league championships in NFL history (13). The Packers were the first NFL team to defeat the American Football League (AFL) before the AFL–NFL merger, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is named after Vince Lombardi, the Packers’ first two Super Bowl coaches. Following that, they won two Super Bowls under head coach Mike Holmgren in 1996 and Mike McCarthy in 2010.  In addition, the Packers have the most wins (804) and the best win–loss record (.571) in NFL history, which includes both regular season and postseason games.

The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions, who make up the NFC North division in the NFL, have long been rivals of the Packers (formerly known as the NFC Central Division). They’ve played over 100 games versus each of those clubs and have a winning overall record against them all, a distinction shared only by the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys.

With

roots dating back to 1921, the Bears–Packers rivalry is one of the most storied in American professional sports. Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears in the season opener under first-year head coach Matt LaFleur, marking the first time since 2003 that the league-wide kickoff game did not feature the defending Super Bowl champions, with the Packers and Bears being selected for their historic rivalry in the NFL’s 100th season.

For the first time since 2016, the Packers qualified for the playoffs with a 13–3 record and a first-round bye as the NFC’s second seed.  They advanced to the NFC Championship game by defeating the San Francisco 49ers 37–20 in the NFC Divisional round after defeating the Seattle Seahawks 28–23.

For the second consecutive year in 2020, the Green Bay Packers won the NFC North Division. The original “Articles of Incorporation for the Green Bay Football Corporation,” enacted in 1923, stated that any proceeds from the sale of the franchise would go to the Sullivan-Wallen Post of the American Legion to create “a proper soldier’s memorial.” This clause was added to ensure that shareholders would never be enticed to move the team away from Green Bay.

Shareholders voted in November 1997 to shift the Sullivan-Wallen Post’s beneficiary to the Green Bay Packers Foundation, which donates to a variety of organisations and institutions around Wisconsin. Despite the fact that Packers stock is referred to in corporate selling documents as “common stock,” it does not have the same rights as common or preferred stock. It doesn’t come with an equity stake, doesn’t pay dividends, can’t be sold, isn’t protected under securities legislation, and doesn’t allow you to buy season tickets.

Voting rights, an invitation to the corporation’s annual meeting, and the option to purchase exclusive shareholder-only products are all given to all shareholders.  Stock can only be resold to the team for a fraction of its original cost. While fresh shares can be given as presents, once ownership has been established, transfers are only permitted between immediate family members.

Green Bay is the only club in the NFL with this ownership structure, which violates current league rules that limit teams to 32 owners with one owning a minimum 30 percent share. When the NFL’s current ownership regulation was established in the 1980s, it grandfathered the Packers’ corporation.  The Packers are also the only major-league sports organisation in the United States that releases its financial balance sheet every year because it is a publicly held nonprofit.

A seven-member executive committee is chosen from a 45-member board of directors to lead the Green Bay Packers, Inc. It is made up of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and three at-large members, with only the president receiving compensation. Directing company management, approving large capital expenditures, setting broad policy, and reviewing management performance are some of the responsibilities.

Normally, the Packers are represented at NFL owners meetings by their elected president. Except at owners-only meetings, where president Dominic Olejniczak appeared, Vince Lombardi represented the team as general manager at league meetings during his time as coach. In December 1986, the Packers founded the Green Bay Packers Foundation. It supports a wide range of activities and initiatives in the areas of education, civic affairs, health care, human services, and youth-related programmes.

The foundation was named as the receiver of any residual assets upon the team’s sale or dissolution at the 1997 annual stockholders meeting, rather than a Sullivan-Wallen Post soldiers monument. Cheeseheads, a moniker for Wisconsin citizens based on the state’s abundant cheese manufacturing, was originally used as an insult during a 1987 game between the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers. Instead, it became a source of pride for the entire state, and Packers supporters have embraced it especially since 1994.

Wherever the squad plays, bright orange triangle cheesehead caps are a must.Young Packers fans can bring their bikes to training camp during the summer months, which is held outside the Don Hutson Center, and have their favourite players ride them from the locker room to Ray Nitschke Field. This long-standing custom dates back to 1957, when Lambeau Field was built.

At the time, Packers tight end Gary Knafelc remarked, “I believe it was just because the children wanted us to ride their bicycles with them. ‘Hey, ride my bike,’ I remember hearing youngsters say.” At Lambeau Field, the team hosts a Family Night scrimmage, which is usually an intra-squad affair. Over 60,000 spectators attended sellout crowds in 2004 and 2005, with a high of 62,492 in 2005 when the Buffalo Bills played.

Packers fans were named the second-best in the NFL by ESPN.com in August 2008.The Packers were initially tied for the most fans with the Pittsburgh Steelers (who ended ahead of the Packers), but ESPN’s John Clayton, a native of Pittsburgh, broke the tie. The Packers wore a throwback jersey for the 2010 season that was inspired after the team’s first world championship season in 1929. The Packers were once again known as “the Blues,” thanks to their navy blue jerseys with gold circles and navy numbers.

In 2015, they were replaced with navy blue throwbacks with gold shoulders and numbers, which were worn from 1937 until 1949.  The Packers switched to an all-green look for their throwback thirds in 2021, emulating the uniforms used from 1950 to 1953.  The Packers used to wear brown helmets with throwbacks, but due to the NFL’s one-shell rule, they’ve been wearing gold helmets with no decals since 2013.

When the NFL switched uniform suppliers from Reebok to Nike in 2012, the Packers refused to make any changes to their uniforms outside of the required supplier’s logo and new league uniform logos, rejecting all of Nike’s “Elite 51” enhancements, including keeping the traditional striped collar of the jersey instead of Nike’s new collar design.

County Stadium was designed primarily for baseball and only minor modifications were required to accommodate football. It only held 56,000 people at its peak, barely exceeding the NFL’s minimal capacity, and many of those seats were severely blocked. A football field could barely fit on the field. The end zones stretched onto the warning track, and both teams shared the same sideline (except from a piece of tape).

The Packers played their entire schedule in Green Bay for the first time in 62 years in 1994, thanks to upgrades and capacity expansions at Lambeau Field and the Brewers prepared to campaign for their new facility. Former Milwaukee season ticketholders will continue to receive preference for one pre-season game, the second and fifth regular-season games, and playoff games at Lambeau Field through a lottery under the “Gold Package” scheme.

The Packers practise in the Don Hutson Center, an indoor facility, Ray Nitschke Field, an outdoor field with artificial FieldTurf, and Clarke Hinkle Field, an outdoor field with natural grass, all located across the street from Lambeau Field in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.
