Jack Patrick Dorsey (November 19, 1976) is an American philanthropist and millionaire who is the co-founder and CEO of Twitter as well as the founder and CEO of Square, a financial payments firm. Dorsey, the son of Tim and Marcia (née Smith) Dorsey, was born and reared in St. Louis, Missouri. He is descended from English, Irish, and Italian ancestors. His father worked for a mass spectrometer firm, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom. His uncle is a Catholic priest in Cincinnati, and he attended Catholic Bishop DuBourg High School. Dorsey used to work as a fashion model when he was younger. Dorsey had developed an interest in dispatch routing by the age of 14. Taxicab businesses still utilise some of the open-source software he developed in the field of dispatch logistics. Dorsey started at the University of Missouri–Rolla in 1995 and stayed for two years before moving to New York University in 1997, where he dropped out two years later, one semester short of graduating. While at NYU, he came up with the concept that would eventually become Twitter. Dorsey relocated to California while working as a programmer on dispatching. Dorsey founded his firm in Oakland in 2000 to use the Internet to send couriers, cabs, and emergency services.
Obvious Corporation was co-founded by Williams, Stone, and Noah Glass, which later split out Twitter, Inc., with Dorsey as CEO (CEO). Dorsey led the company through two rounds of venture capital investment as CEO. He was reportedly fired for leaving work early to pursue other interests such as yoga and fashion design. As the site grew in popularity, Dorsey prioritised improving uptime over generating cash, which Twitter was not meant to do in 2008. Commercial usage of Twitter and its API, according to Dorsey, are two factors that might lead to paid services. He explains his three guiding principles, which he claims are shared throughout the firm. Williams became CEO on October 16, 2008, and Dorsey became chairman of the board. During his tenure as chairman, Dorsey was a member of many State Department delegations, including one headed by Jared Cohen to Iraq in April 2009. When Iranians took to the streets in November for the Green Revolution, Twitter was scheduled to do site maintenance, which included briefly shutting down Twitter’s servers.
Dorsey reacted to Cohen’s plea to postpone the maintenance so as not to disrupt the Iranian revolution, since Iranians were using Twitter to communicate and coordinate. Since President Obama stated that he would not interfere in Iran’s affairs, the action has sparked controversy. To free up more room for text, Dorsey stated in May 2016 that images and links will not be counted in the 140-character restriction. This was an attempt to attract new users, since the daily number of tweets had decreased to around 300 million in January 2016 from around 500 million in September 2013 and 661 million in August 2014. Dorsey’s personal Twitter account, which has 3.9 million followers, was momentarily banned on November 22, 2016. Dorsey tweeted after reinstating the account that the ban was due to a “internal error.”
Dorsey held a private meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where they addressed Trump’s worries that Twitter had restricted or deleted some of his and conservatives’ Twitter followers. Dorsey tweeted after the meeting that they talked about improving Twitter “healthier and more polite.” Dorsey had given a TED lecture a week prior regarding the social media platform’s proliferation of abuse and disinformation, which drew condemnation. Dorsey’s personal Twitter account was allegedly hacked for about an hour on August 30, 2019, by a group known as the Chuckling Squad, who posted and retweeted several racist remarks. Twitter’s stock price dropped over 24% on October 23, 2019, from $38.83 to $30.75. The reason for the suspension was a third-quarter profit shortfall, which Twitter blamed on ad targeting issues. Dorsey has been working hard to reduce Twitter’s influence on political elections, which included prohibiting all political advertisements. This was also cited as a major factor in the decline. Twitter will ban all political advertising as of November 22, 2019, according to Dorsey. The policy is in effect. On February 29, 2020, activist hedge fund Elliott Management, founded by billionaire Paul Singer, stated that it will seek to remove Dorsey from Twitter’s board of directors and propose four directors, including Elliott’s senior portfolio manager Jesse Cohn. Among others who backed Dorsey were entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. Days later, the two parties struck a deal, with Dorsey staying CEO. Dorsey was one of many tech CEOs summoned by the US Senate Commerce Committee in October 2020. The committee’s chairman, Republican Roger Wicker, spearheaded the drive to compel the CEOs of Twitter, Facebook, and Google to testify on the companies’ legal immunity.
