Jacqueline Marie Evancho is a classical American crossover singer who has early acquired a widespread reputation. Since 2009, she has released an EP selling platinum with eight albums, including three top 10 debuts by Billboard 200. She also participated in three solo concert programs for PBS. Evancho participated in talent competitions between the years 2008 and 2010, sang the US national anthem at a baseball game in Pittsburgh, launched his first CD Prelude to a Dream, and received YouTube interest. At the age of 10, she became a big deal in 2010 with her second-place finish in America’s Got Talent in the fifth season.
With the 2010 release of her O Holy Night EP, the youngest American debut artist and the youngest solo artist ever to go platinum in the US, Evancho became the best-selling debut artist in 2010. In 2011, Dream with Me launched on the Billboard 200 chart No. 2 and became the youngest Top 5 debut artist in the history of the UK. For 2011, Billboard classified Evancho as the top artist for classical albums. Evancho released a full-length vacation album Heavenly Christmas later this year, which became the youngest person ever to give a solo concert at the Lincoln Center in New York City on her debut concert tour.
In 2012, Evancho released her third top 10 debut album Songs from the Silver Screen. In 2013, she has performed at Carnegie Hall and internationally for benefit performances. She was also featured in the 2013 Robert Redford movie The Company You Keep and modeled on apparel for Guess Kids. In support of each of her studio albums, she gave concert tours. Evancho appears as a competitor for The Masked Singer in 2020. Evancho was born on April 9, 2000, to Lisa and Michael Evancho in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her dad runs a video surveillance company until 2010. She has Juliet’s older sister, Zachary’s younger brother, and Rachel’s younger sister. She was raised in a Catholic home in a suburb of Pittsburgh. Evancho began her training in the Pine-Richland School District, although she acquired online learning at various periods after her career began.
She graduated from Pine-Richland High School in 2018. After Evancho witnessed as a little kid the cinematic version of The Phantom of Opera, she started singing songs at home. Her parents claimed that her voice wasn’t remarkable until she entered her first talent competition soon before her eighth birthday. Kean Idol, Evancho, finished second in the competition. She started taking vocal lessons and singing in Pennsylvania at events, churches, and nursing homes. She also launched a YouTube account, participated in a 2008–09 season in the Children’s Festival Choir of Pittsburgh (now the Pittsburgh Youth Choir), and portrayed the title role in Little Red Riding Hood, the musical adaptation for school in 2009.
In 2009 Evancho took part in the 15th annual USA World Showcase Talent Competition in Las Vegas, where she finished second. She was again a runner-up at the 2009 Kean Idol competition. She received the Golden Ribby Award – WonderworldTV and the Talent Quest TV Show in other 2009 talent competitions (both in Massachusetts). Also in 2009, she sang “Ave Maria” in the PBS television special “Celebrate America” by composer and driver Tim Janis and appeared in subsequent concerts and TV appearances with Janis, who looked for her after watching her on YouTube.
In 2009 and 2010, she had several singing performances in Pennsylvania. Evancho originally grabbed the eye of record producer David Foster in 2009. In October 2009 she sang in the ‘David Foster & Friends’ event at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey for a selection of the “Hitman Talent Search Contest.” Evancho released their indie debut album Prelude to a Dream in November 2009. The CD mostly included songs such as “Con te partirò,” “To Where You Are,” “Concrete Angel” and “Amazing Grace.” After Evancho’s first performance on America’s Got Talent, he made his premiere in the Billboard 200 in No. 121 and in No. 2 in the Billboard Classical Albums chart of August 2010.
The parents of Evancho pulled the record later that month claiming the voice growth of Evancho after its debut. The leaders of Pittsburgh established “Jackie Evancho Week” the following week. Her final competition performance was Gounod’s “Ave Maria” on 14 September 2010. Evancho sang “Time to Say Goodbye” together with guest artist Sarah Brightman on the following evening of the AGT season, then Evancho was confirmed to be the runner-up, and finished second to singer Michael Grimm.
Many spectators and analysts felt that Evancho should have won, and Grimm was surprised at the result. The event offered Evancho significant visibility to US audiences, with up to 16 million viewers watching their performances. The final show in three years was the highest-rated edition of AGT.
A week after the finale, she was a guest at The Tonight Show, singing and giving her first late-night talk to Jay Leno. In the 2013 book Inside AGT: The untold stories of America’s god talent, Evancho was featured and interviewed. Evancho participated with American Got Talent: Live Tour in ten cities in 2010,[signed an SYCO record deal with Columbia music and records, and performed with David Foster in Las Vegas.
Evancho mentored Yvie Burnett, who worked with other AGT vocalists, from June 2010 through mid-2011. Heavenly Christmas, Evancho’s 2011 Christmas CD was made by Rob Mounsey. The selections include classic Christmas songs like ‘First Christmas’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem,’ standards such as ‘I’m going to be the home for Christmas’ and ‘White Christmas’ and more recent songs such as Walking in the Air (1982 animated short The Snowman) and ‘Believe’ (from the 2004 movie The Polar Express).
On 1 November 2011, the album was published exclusively through Walmart in the United States and elsewhere in the United States in October 2012. The album is entered in no. 1 of the Billboard Classical Albums chart at no. 3 and peaked on no. 11 on billboard 200.
It peaked on the Canadian album chart at number 9. The review of Allmusic awarded the album three stars: “The vocals of Evancho are outstanding as they always are, and the arrangements are predominantly tasteful, with occasional bombs. The TV shows of Evancho promoting the album included The View, The Talk, and The Tonight Show.
She did concerts in Buffalo, New York, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh to promote the album in December 2011. Billboard has placed Heavenly Christmas as the best-selling Classical Classical Album of the year on its 2011 annual charts. It was the No. 41 album on the Canadian Albums chart for 2012. Under 23 September 2014 Evancho released her fifth full-length album, Awakening, on the label Sony Masterworks’ Portrait Records.
In November 2014 and in 2016 Evancho promoted the record with a concert tour and a third PBS special. The album includes classic works like “Vocalise” of Rachmaninoff and “Dormi Jesu,” the classical crossover of more current pieces like “With or Without You” of U2, the “Je time” of Lara Fabian, and “Memories” of Within Temptation; and some original pieces.
The deluxe edition of Walmart contained six Christmas bonus songs. Evancho published songs of the album which include the cover of Game of Thrones ‘The Rains of Castamere,’ ‘Think of Me’ from The Phantom of the Opera, ‘Your Love’ by Ennio Morricone and ‘Ave Maria” by Vavilov. The Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 Billboard Classical Albums chart were first debuted at No. 17.
This was Evancho’s fifth consecutive No. 1 release on the classical albums chart of the Billboard. Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos gave an A rating to Evancho’s CD, which he called “beautiful from start to finish thanks to her warm, classic vocals.” He labeled her songs “ethereal,” “crystalline” and “haunting” versions. Billboard classified Awakening as the No. 11 best-selling classical album in 2014, the No. 3 best-selling classical album in 2015, and the No. 31 high selling classical record in 2016.
At the 2013 event “One Drop One Night on World Water Day,” Evancho joined over 200 Cirque du Soleil performers in Bellagio, Las Vegas to support the One Drop Foundation’s international Clean Water Access Program and education. Robin Leach has written: “The 12-year old superstar vocalist Jackie stole in the waters of the enormous stage with her “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” She also dominated the amazing climax as an angel [lowered] on the theatre rooftop harness. Evancho appeared in January 2016 at the Mending Broken Hearts With Hope lunch at The Abused Women & Children’s Shelter in Naples, Florida.
She then released Sam Smith’s single and video coverage “Writing at the Wall She also published an original pop song “Apocalypse” by Peter Zizzo. Billboard wrote it “He has discovered a brand-new sound. The seventeen-year-old singer… takes a step outside the classical realm that has made her known.” But Evancho tells Billboard, “I won’t get rid of my classical voice, because that’s my roots, I love most.” However, one critic for The New Yorker found that Evancho “sounds uninteresting beyond its category.”
For a large-scale 2017 equestrian music touring spectacle in China based on the Trojan War called “Troy,” Evancho played the theme song “Set Me Free,” which was written by Tyler Bates. Evancho participated in the annual gala “Romance of the Mission” to help preserve the San Juan Capistrano Mission in California and to promote its cultural and educational programming in 2018. In 2019, she performed at the Brave Heart Foundation, which aids homeless LGBTQ young adults, at the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh.
In July, joined by Pacific Symphony, she headlined an engagement in the Christ Cathedral dedication festivities in Garden Grove, California. In October she sang songs from the new rock album Get Jack with Kip Winger’s music, Damien Gray’s lyrics and books, and Kelly Devine’s director. Evancho placed on “The Ten Best Managed People of 2011″ list of the National League of Junior Cotillions to show humility and civility as a young performer”
In 2012 she was honored at the 20th annual History Makers Award Dinner by the Senator John Heinz History Center as one of five ‘different Pittsburghers. recognized for their remarkable achievements to Western Pennsylvania, the country, and the world.’ Evancho has always been extremely honored as the youngest person. The search for Kean Quest Talent has been an annual ‘Jackie Evancho Award’ since 2011 for a competitor that ‘exemplifies courage and motivation and motivates them to pursue their aspirations.’ In 2011 and 2012, Evancho was recognized by Billboard magazine to the “21 Under 21: Music’s Challenges Minors” list.
