Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Jacklyn and Theodore Jorgensen. His biological great-grandfather John Jrgensen, who was born on the small island of Sams in Holbk County, Zealand, today a municipality in the Central Denmark Region of Denmark, immigrated to Chicago around 1900 and had a son, Theodore “Ted” John Jorgensen (b. 1917), with his wife, Ida Minnie Jorgensen, who was also born in Denmark. Ted Jorgensen (b. 1944), Jeff Bezos’ biological father, was this son’s father. His mother was a 17-year-old high school student at the time of his birth, and his father was 19.
Following Mike’s graduation from the University of New Mexico, the family relocated to Houston, Texas, where Mike began working for Exxon as an engineer. From fourth to sixth grade, Jeff Bezos attended River Oaks Elementary School in Houston. Lawrence Preston Gise, a regional director of the US Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in Albuquerque, was Bezos’ maternal grandpa. Gise took an early retirement to his family’s ranch in Cotulla, Texas, where Bezos spent many summers as a child. Later on, Bezos would buy the ranch and grow it from 25,000 acres (10,117 hectares) to 300,000 acres (121,406 ha). Bezos was offered employment at Intel, Bell Labs, and Andersen Consulting after graduating from college in 1986. He began his career at Fitel, a financial telecoms start-up, where he was entrusted with developing a global trading network. Following that, Bezos was promoted to head of development and then director of customer service. When he became a product manager at Bankers Trust, he switched into the banking business. From 1988 through 1990, he worked there. In 1990, he went to work at D. E. Shaw & Co, a newly formed hedge fund with a significant emphasis on mathematical modelling, where he stayed until 1994. At the age of 30, Bezos was named the fourth senior vice-president of D. E. Shaw. Bezos decided to open an online bookshop in late 1993. On July 5, 1994, he quit his job at D. E. Shaw and established Amazon in his garage, after developing the company’s business plan while driving from New York City to Seattle. Bezos considered establishing his firm on an Indian reserve outside San Francisco to avoid paying taxes before settling on Seattle.
Bezos called his new firm Cadabra at first, but subsequently changed it to Amazon after the Amazon River in South America, partly because it begins with the letter A, which is the first letter of the alphabet. Because website listings were alphabetized at the time, a name beginning with “A” would show first. He also thought the name “Amazon,” which is the name of the world’s largest river, was appropriate for what he envisioned would be the world’s largest online bookshop. He took a $300,000 loan from his parents and put it into Amazon. He forewarned several early investors that Amazon had a 70% probability of failing or going bankrupt. Despite the fact that Amazon began as an online bookshop, Bezos has always intended to grow into other areas. Bezos took Amazon public three years after founding company with an initial public offering (IPO) . Bezos asserted, in reaction to unfavourable reports from Fortune and Barron’s, that the Internet’s growth will outpace competition from major book stores such as B&N.
Amazon’s global senior vice president, Amit Agarwal, was deployed to India in March 2018 with $5.5 billion to localise operations throughout the company’s supply chain channels. Later that month, Trump accused Amazon and Bezos of evading sales taxes, abusing mail routes, and engaging in anti-competitive business activities. As a result of the President’s harsh remarks, Amazon’s stock price dropped 9%, reducing Bezos’ personal fortune by $10.7 billion. After scholarly reports from Stanford University suggested that Trump would be powerless to control Amazon in any meaningful sense, Bezos recouped his losses. Bezos stated in February 2021 that he will stand down as CEO of Amazon in the third quarter of 2021 and become the Executive Chair of the Amazon Board. Andy Jassy will succeed him as CEO. Bezos informed Amazon workers on February 2, 2021, that the transition will allow him “the time and energy needed to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and [his] other causes.”
Bezos established Blue Origin, a human spaceflight business, in September 2000. Bezos has always been fascinated by space flight and the evolution of human existence throughout the solar system. When he graduated from high school in 1982, he was valedictorian. His lecture was followed by an interview with the Miami Herald in which he indicated interest in developing hotels, entertainment parks, and colonies for astronauts in space. Bezos, who is 18 years old, claimed that he wants to protect the Earth from misuse and resource depletion. Rob Meyerson, the company’s first president, oversaw Blue Origin from 2003 until 2017. Blue Origin had a quiet profile after its creation until 2006, when it bought a huge plot of land in West Texas for a launch and test site. Following the company’s rise to prominence in the late 2000s, Bezos expressed an interest in lowering the expense of human space flight while simultaneously improving the safety of extraterrestrial travel. During a short-hop test flight in September 2011, one of the company’s unmanned prototype vehicles crashed. Despite the fact that the disaster was seen as a setback, news sources emphasised how far the business has progressed in spaceflight since its inception. Bezos said in 2015 that he was working on a new orbital launch vehicle that will make its first flight in the late 2010s. Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft successfully launched into space in November, reaching a test altitude of 329,839 feet (100.5 kilometres) before landing vertically back at the launch site in West Texas. In 2016, Bezos invited a small group of journalists to tour and photograph his headquarters. He has consistently advocated for more interstellar energy and industrial manufacture to reduce the negative consequences of pollution in the workplace. He stated on his Instagram account in June 2021 that he and his brother Mark will go to space as passengers on the first crewed mission of New Shepard.
