Mother Judi was originally a secretary who later became a housewife; she formerly worked in sales for the transportation industry; she has one brother, Gregg, who works in the transportation industry as well. Despite the fact that her adoptive paternal grandfather was of Jewish descent, she was reared as a Catholic by her immediate adoptive family and extended relatives.

She attended Parkway School in East Meadow for elementary school, and then Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, Long Island, for high school and college, all of which are Catholic institutions. She began her commercial career as a child, appearing in a print campaign for Playskool’s Dress Me Up Ernie doll, in which she was cast as a child. Her first television commercial appearance was for Toys R Us. She then appeared in three Burger King and Hess toy truck advertisements, as well as three Jell-O commercials with comedian Bill Cosby when she was three, six, and eleven years old. She has since appeared in numerous other commercials for various companies.

While still a high school student, Ushkowitz performed in a variety of musicals, including the world premiere of Les Misérables, which was performed in a high school auditorium. Among her, many other roles are those in The Baker’s Wife, Into the Woods, Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods, and Romaine Patterson in The Laramie Project, to name a few. Ushkowitz graduated from high school in 2004 and went on to study at Marymount Manhattan College, where she returned to her role as Little Red Riding Hood in the musical Into the Woods, which she had previously performed.

After graduating from Marymount Manhattan with a Bachelor of Arts in theatrical arts, a specialty in performance, and a minor in musical theatre, she continued her education at New York University, where she obtained an additional minor in musical theatre. Aside from her appearances in Broadway productions such as The King and I, Waitress, and Glee, she has also acted in a number of films. She is perhaps best known for her depiction as Tina Cohen-Chang on the Fox comedy-drama series Glee. The Tony Award she got for her work as a producer on Broadway was well-deserved.

She has also advocated on behalf of several other causes, in addition to her work with the Kindred Foundation, which she founded. During the NOH8 Campaign’s 2012 campaign to repeal Proposition 8, which had previously barred same-sex marriages in the state of California, which she supported, she posed with her Glee co-star Kevin McHale in a photoshoot for the campaign. Ushkowitz has also collaborated with a number of organizations, including NYCLASS and Oceana.

Forage fish are being overfished in the Channel Islands, and the repercussions of this overfishing on the survival of these fish are being ignored, according to Ushkowitz, who has been a long-time proponent of ocean conservation. In the same year, she was also the host of the 2015 Nautica Oceana Beach House event, which she also hosted. She has also attempted to raise awareness about the declining sea lion population in California, which has been connected to the overfishing of feed fish as a major factor in the decline.

The news of her engagement to David Stanley, according to Ushkowitz, was publicized in August 2020. Kevin McHale, Ushkowitz’s friend, and Glee co-star was also there during her bachelorette party, which took place in May of 2021 in Los Angeles. It was in the 1996 production of The King and I, which she co-wrote and directed, that she made her Broadway musical debut. Ushkowitz was 13 years old when she sang the American National Anthem at a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden in 2007.  Among the roles, she understudied in 2008 are Ilse, Anna, Martha, and Thea in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Ushkowitz was also a featured performer in the show. On Fox’s musical comedy-drama series Glee, which aired in 2009, Ushkowitz was cast in the role of Tina Cohen-Chang, who is portrayed by Ushkowitz.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy looked for players who could relate to the surge of adrenaline that comes with performing in a theatrical show while casting the television series. The result was a group that includes a diverse range of actors. Instead of using the traditional network casting calls that he would have used, he spent three months on Broadway in order to find Ushkowitz. Initially, she was under the notion that Tina’s stuttering was genuine; however, she was proven incorrect by further revelations.

Ushkowitz has performed solo on a variety of songs, including Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers,” Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me,” PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, Madonna’s “Hung Up,” and Kat Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” Raymund Flandez of the Wall Street Journal lauded Ushkowitz’s “powerful crystalline voice,” which he defined as “strong and crystalline,” on the “True Colors” cover, saying it showcased his “powerful crystalline voice.”

Kennedy in an article for the Los Angeles Times, describing the “poignant” rendition as one of his “feel-good, tearjerker” moments and calling it “a beautiful moment.” The version achieved number 47 on the Australian Singles Chart, number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 66 on the Canadian Hot 100, number 1 on the Irish Singles Chart, number 1 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart, number 38 on the Canadian Hot 100, and number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ushkowitz was cast in the role of Jeannie Ryan in the Hollywood Bowl production of Hair, which premiered in August 2014 at the Hollywood Bowl. In 2014, Ushkowitz was approached by a fellow adoptee, Samantha Futerman, which resulted in the formation of Kindred: The Foundation for Adoption. The foundation was established to provide international and domestic adoptees and their families (both adoptive and biological) with services such as travel, translation, and support for those wishing to reunite with their biological families.

Ushkowitz executive produced the documentary Twinsters in 2015, which was motivated by the same spirit that prompted her to conceive Kindred. With Samantha and Anais, identical twin sisters who were separated at birth, the story of their reunion is told through the lens of this film. During the South by Southwest film festival in 2015, the film received its world debut. Her performance as Julia Sullivan in a special production of The Wedding Singer at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, which she also participated in, took place in the same year. However, due to the positive response, the play garnered from both critics and audiences, the show was extended beyond its intended one-week run time frame.

When it was announced in December 2015 that Ushkowitz had been cast as Marie the Nurse in the film adaptation of the musical Hello Again, which also stars Nolan Gerard Funk, Audra McDonald, and Martha Plimpton, the internet erupted with enthusiasm. The podcast Showmance, hosted by Ushkowitz and former Glee co-star Kevin McHale, debuted earlier this year, and it features the two talking about their on- and off-screen relationship. During Season 1 of the podcast, one of the most often requested topics was their time spent on the hit show Glee, which they discussed in detail. Season 2 of Glee kicked off with a detailed recap of the previous season of the program. Every week during the second season of Glee, McHale, and Ushkowitz rewatch episodes of the show and divulge behind-the-scenes secrets, as well as personal comments and reflections on the creative process.
