John R. Cash (J. R. Cash) was an American singer, composer, musician, and actor who lived from February 26, 1932 to September 12, 2003. Cash’s music, especially in the latter years of his career, was filled with themes of sadness, moral difficulty, and salvation. He was recognised for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, as well as the distinct sound of his Tennessee accent.

Three backup bands with train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness paired with a more gloomy and humble demeanor, free jail concerts, and a signature all-black stage attire gave him the nickname “The Man in Black.” Cash gained to stardom in the developing rockabilly scene in Memphis, Tennessee, after four years in the Air Force.

Cash was born to poor cotton farmers in Kingsland, Arkansas. “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash,” he’d say before singing “Folsom Prison Blues,” one of his signature tunes. “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” “Get Rhythm,” and “Man in Black” are among his iconic tunes, in addition to “Folsom Prison Blues.

” He also recorded comedic songs like “One Piece at a Time” and “A Boy Named Sue,” a duet with his future wife June called “Jackson” (which was followed by many more duets after their marriage), and railroad tunes like “Hey, Porter,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Rock Island Line.”  He covered songs by current rock artists throughout the latter stages of his career, including Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage,” and Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.”

Cash is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with more than 90 million albums sold around the world.Country, rock & roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel influences were all included in his music. He was inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame as a result of his cross-genre popularity.

Walk the Line, a 2005 biography, chronicled his musical career. J. R. Cash was born to Carrie Cloveree  and Ray Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas, on February 26, 1932. Roy, Margaret Louise, and Jack were his three older siblings; Reba, Joanne, and Tommy were his three younger siblings (who also became a successful country artist).

His ancestors were mostly English and Scots. Cash’s paternal grandmother also claimed Cherokee lineage, despite the fact that a DNA test of Cash’s daughter Rosanne revealed no known Native American markers. After meeting with the then-laird of Falkland, Major Michael Crichton-Stuart, he was able to trace his Scottish surname back to 11th-century Fife.

His family’s name is commemorated at Cash Loch and other Fife locales. He is a distant relative of Sir William Cash, a British Conservative politician.  Because his mother wanted him to be named John and his father wanted him to be named Ray, J. R. was the only option they could come up with.

Cash was not allowed to use initials as a first name when he joined the Air Force, so he changed his name to John R. Cash. He began adopting the name Johnny Cash in 1955, when he signed with Sun Records. When Cash was three years old, the family moved to Dyess, Arkansas, a New Deal colony established to allow poor people to cultivate land that they may someday buy.

He

began working in cotton fields with his family when he was five years old, singing along with them. A flood hit Cash’s farm in Dyess, prompting him to write “Five Feet High and Rising.”His family’s economic and personal problems during the Great Depression led him to write many songs about the poor and working class.

Cash’s older brother Jack, with whom he was close, was nearly killed by an unprotected table saw at work in 1944. His mother pushed him to avoid work and go fishing with Cash, but Jack insisted on working because the family needed the money, according to his memoirs. Cash frequently expressed his regret for the tragedy and expressed his anticipation of “seeing  brother in Heaven.”

Gospel music and the radio were a big part of Cash’s childhood. Cash began playing and writing songs at the age of 12, after being taught guitar by his mother and a childhood friend. Cash had a high-tenor voice when he was younger, but his voice evolved as he grew older, and he eventually became a bass-baritone.

He sung on a local radio station when he was in high school. He later recorded My Mother’s Hymn Book, a collection of traditional gospel melodies. Traditional Irish music, which he saw Dennis Day sing on the Jack Benny radio show on a weekly basis, had a big influence on him. On July 7, 1950, Cash signed up for the Air Force.

Cash was assigned to the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile of the US Air Force Security Service at Landsberg, West Germany, after completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Brooks Air Force Base, both in San Antonio, Texas. Intercepting Soviet Army messages as a Morse code operator was his job.

His first band, “The Landsberg Barbarians,” was formed while he was at Landsberg.  He returned to Texas on July 3, 1954, after being honourably discharged as a staff sergeant.  As a result of surgery to remove a cyst on the right side of his jaw during his military service, he developed a prominent scar on the right side of his jaw. Cash met Italian-American Vivian Liberto, 17, at a roller skating rink in San Antonio, Texas, on July 18, 1951, while in Air Force basic training.

They dated for three weeks before Cash’s three-year tour in West Germany. Hundreds of love letters were written by the pair throughout this time.  They were married at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in San Antonio on August 7, 1954, one month after his discharge. Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy, and Tara were their four children. Cash and his family relocated to a hilltop property in Casitas Springs, California, in 1961.

He and his dad had earlier relocated to the area to operate the Johnny Cash Trailer Park, a modest trailer park. Several run-ins with local cops resulted from his binge drinking. Cash’s serious drug and alcohol usage, as well as his frequent touring, numerous acts of adultery with other women, and his intimate friendship with vocalist June Carter, prompted Liberto to file for divorce in 1966. The mother reared their four daughters after that.

While on tour, Cash met June Carter of the Carter Family, and the two fell in love. Cash proposed to June at a live performance in London, Ontario, in 1968, thirteen years after they initially met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. In Franklin, Kentucky, they married on March 1, 1968. John Carter Cash, born March 3, 1970, was their only child together.

Both Johnny and June have only one child, him. Cash became stepfather to Carlene and Rosie, June’s daughters from her two previous marriages, in addition to his four daughters and John Carter. For 35 years, until June’s death in May 2003, Cash and Carter worked, raised their child, made music, and toured together. June tried to keep Cash off amphetamines throughout their marriage by taking his pills and flushing them.

June stayed with him throughout his several rehab stays and decades of drug addiction treatment. Cash claimed his only reason for living was his music after June’s death in May 2003; he died just four months later. Cash’s parents raised him as a Southern Baptist. As a member of the Central Baptist Church in Dyess, Arkansas, he was baptised in the Tyronza River in 1944.
