Joshua David Hawley (born December 31, 1979) is an American politician, lawyer, and former lecturer who has served as Missouri’s junior senator since 2019. Hawley, a Republican, served as Missouri’s 42nd attorney general from 2017 to 2019, before beating two-term Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill in the 2018 election.
Hawley graduated from Stanford University in 2002 and Yale Law School in 2006. He was born in Springdale, Arkansas, to a banker and a teacher. He worked as a legal clerk for Tenth Circuit Judge Michael W. McConnell and Chief Justice John Roberts, and then as a lawyer from 2008 to 2011, first in private practice and subsequently for the Tenth Circuit.
Joshua David Hawley was born in Springdale, Arkansas, on December 31, 1979, to banker Ronald and teacher Virginia Hawley. After Ronald joined a division of Boatmen’s Bancshares in Lexington, Missouri, the Hawley’s moved there in 1981. Hawley went to Lexington Middle School before attending Rockhurst High School, a prestigious Jesuit boys’ prep school in Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1998. Several of Hawley’s instructors, according to his middle school principal, Barbara Warbling, thought “he was probably going to be president one day.” Hawley used to write columns for his hometown newspaper, The Lexington News, while he was in high school.
After law school, Hawley worked as a law clerk for two years, first for Judge Michael W. McConnell of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in 2006 and then for Chief Justice John Roberts of the United States Supreme Court in 2007. Hawley met his future wife, Erin Morrow, a fellow Yale Law graduate who was also clerking for Roberts, while at the Supreme Court.
From 2008 until 2011, Hawley worked as an appellate litigator with the law firm Hogan & Hartson, following his clerkships. Before going to Missouri, he worked for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C., from 2011 to 2015. He produced briefs and provided legal advice at Becket.
Hawley ran for Attorney General of Missouri in 2016. David Humphreys, CEO of Joplin-based Tomko Building Products, contributed $4.4 million to the campaign’s $9.2 million total. [number 30] Hawley won the Republican primary on August 2 with 64 percent of the vote, defeating Kurt Schaefer. On November 8, he defeated Democrat Teresa Hensley with 58.5 percent of the vote in the general election. During the campaign, Hawley chastised “career politicians” for “climbing the ladder” from one post to the next, which became a source of bipartisan criticism when he ran for the Senate two years later.
