Spanish singer and composer Julio Iglesias (born September 23, 1943, Madrid, Spain), known professionally as Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva, is known for his romantic image, compelling stage presence, and emotive songs, which have helped him become one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

Thousands of CDs were sold in more than a dozen languages by the early twenty-first century, making him the most successful musician of all time. The singer was born and reared in Madrid, where he grew up in an upper-middle-class neighbourhood with his parents and older brother. Following the completion of his secondary school, Iglesias pursued a legal education at the insistence of his father.

While doing so, he represented the renowned Real Madrid professional football (soccer) club as a member of the club’s young reserve team. He was largely crippled in his early twenties due to a benign spinal tumour, which put an end to his dreams of becoming a professional football player. Iglesias was given a guitar by one of his nurses during his protracted recuperation, and he taught himself to play by accompanying songs on the radio throughout his lengthy rehabilitation.

After regaining adequate movement, Iglesias was transferred to the United Kingdom to pursue a degree in English language and literature. During this period, he wrote his debut single, “La vida sigue igual” (“Life Continues as It Always Has”), which he performed and won a Spanish song competition with in 1968. Julio Jose Iglesias de la Cueva was born on September 23, 1943, in Madrid, Spain, and is a Spanish actor and director. In addition to being a well-known Spanish gynaecologist from Ourense, Julio Iglesias Sr was also a well-known actor.

His mother, Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat, was born in Puerto Rico and raised him there. Iglesias is a Spanish word that signifies churches, and Julio is of Jewish descent. In the following years, he studied law at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid and competed in professional football as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda Division, which is the second professional level of association in the Spanish football league system, after graduating from high school. He was engaged in a serious vehicle accident, as a consequence of which he had injuries to his back and legs, forcing him to abandon his football career.

While he was in the hospital, a nurse named Eladio Magdaleno brought him a guitar as a surprise. Music was introduced as a kind of therapy to help him repair his body and get out of sadness. Following his recovery from the injury, he spent a period of time studying at the Bell Educational Trust’s Language School in Cambridge before completing his law degree at the Complutense University of Madrid in the following year. Julio first gained recognition as a vocalist in 1968, when he was awarded a prize at the Benidorm International Song Festival for his song ‘La Vida Sigue Igual,’ which was taken from the film of the same title. Soon after, he secured a recording deal with the Columbia Records label and released his first studio album, titled ‘Yo Canto,’ which reached at number three on the Spanish charts. In 1970, he represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest, where he sang the song ‘Gwendolyne’ and finished fourth in the competition.

with his native Spanish and English, Julio Iglesias has performed in a variety of other languages, including his number one song, ‘Un Canto A Galicia,’ in Galician, ‘Se Mi Lasci Non Vale,’ in Italian, and the French chanson, ‘Je n’ai pas Change.’ In 1979, he relocated to the United States and secured a contract with CBS International, which allowed him to sing in a variety of languages, including German and Portuguese. ‘Begin the Beguine’, his first English hit single, landed at number one on the British charts when his album ‘De Nina a Mujer’ was released. The success of his hit album ‘1100 Bel Air Place’ cemented his reputation as a successful English-language singer, and he went on to collaborate with pop stars such as Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, and Diana Ross, releasing classic songs that reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

He received the Best Latin Pop Album Grammy Award in 1988 for his album ‘Un Hombre Solo,’ which was nominated in the category of Best Latin Pop Album. In the American comedy ‘The Golden Girls,’ he had a brief cameo appearance in the role of himself. Julio Iglesias rose to prominence as one of the most well-known worldwide vocalists, having sung in a variety of languages. Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias’ son, followed in his father’s footsteps to carry on the legacy of his father with a similar style of music.

In 1973, he was named ‘Best New Artist of the Year’ at the Guaicaipuro de Oro in Venezuela, the Pueblo Popular in Spain, Antena in Colombia, and El Heraldo in Mexico, among other festivals and publications. In 1981, he was presented with the ‘CBS Cristal Globe Award’ in Paris, in recognition of having sold the greatest number of recordings in the previous year.

bioAfter a string of successful singles in Japan, he was awarded “Brightest Hope – Male Vocalist” by the Japanese National Committee for Popular Music and “Person of the Decade” by the Spanish magazine ‘Cambio 16’ the following year. The ‘First and Most Popular International Artist of All Time,’ as he was dubbed in China, was awarded to him in 2013.

The label Sony Music awarded him the title of ‘The Most Successful Latin Artist of All Time’ in 2014. In 2015, he was awarded a ‘Honorary Doctorate’ by the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2016, he was awarded the title of ‘Legendary Artist’ by ‘The Brand Laureate,’ which is widely regarded as the most prestigious accolade granted to an artist in Asia at the time. In 1971, he tied the knot with a Filipina journalist and television anchor, Maria Isabel Preysler Arrastia, who belonged to a wealthy aristocratic family in the Philippines. They had three children, one of whom, Enrique Iglesias, went on to become a well-known Spanish singer in his own right, following in his father’s footsteps.

It was unfortunate that the couple separated in 1979. Julio Iglesias then moved on to live with Miranda Rijnsburger, a Dutch model who was 22 years younger than he was at the time of their marriage. The couple subsequently tied the knot in 2010 and went on to have five children. He now resides in the Dominican Republic with his family, where he owns a number of hotel complexes.
