Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Shyamala Gopalan, a biologist whose study on the progesterone receptor gene accelerated advancements in breast cancer research, came to the United States from India in 1958 as a 19-year-old graduate student in nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley. Gopalan earned her Ph.D. in 1964. Donald J. Harris, Harris’s father and a retired economics professor at Stanford University, came to the United States from British Jamaica in 1961 to pursue doctoral studies at UC Berkeley, earning a Ph.D. in economics in 1966. Donald Harris, of Afro-Jamaican ancestry, met his future wife, Shyamala Gopalan, during the civil rights struggle.

Kamala Harris and her younger sister Maya spent their formative years in Berkeley, California, during and after their parents’ studies. They resided initially on Milvia Street in central Berkeley and then in a duplex on Bancroft Way in West Berkeley, an area sometimes referred to as the “flatlands” due to its high concentration of black residents.

Harris entered kindergarten, she was bused to Thousand Oaks Elementary School as part of Berkeley’s comprehensive integration program. Thousand Oaks Elementary School is a public school located in a more wealthier area in northern Berkeley that was formerly 95 percent white but became 40 percent black when the integration plan was implemented.

Harris subsequently went to California to enroll in law school through the University of California, Hastings College of the Law’s Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP). She served as president of the Black Law Students Association at UC Hastings. In 1989, she earned a Juris Doctor and was admitted to the California Bar in June 1990.

Harris met her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, in 2013 on a blind date set up by a mutual acquaintance. Emhoff was an entertainment attorney who rose to the position of managing partner at Venable LLP’s Los Angeles office. Harris and Emhoff were married in Santa Barbara, California, on August 22, 2014. Harris is the stepmother to Emhoff’s two children from his former marriage to film producer Kerstin Emhoff, Cole and Ella.

She is the country’s first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official, as well as the first African American and Asian American vice presidents.

She served as a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021 and as the state’s attorney general from 2011 to 2017. Harris was inaugurated as vice president with President Joe Biden in January 2021, after defeating incumbent President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in the 2020 election.

Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in Oakland, California. She began her career with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before being lured to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and then the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco’s district attorney. She was elected California Attorney General in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Harris served as California’s junior senator from 2017 until 2021.

Harris beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate race to become the Senate’s second African American woman and the first South Asian American. As a senator, she fought for healthcare reform, federal cannabis decriminalization, a road to citizenship for illegal immigrants, the DREAM Act, an assault weapons prohibition, and progressive tax reform. She received national attention for her tough questions during Senate hearings of Trump administration officials, notably Trump’s second Supreme Court candidate Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault.

Harris ran for the Democratic presidential candidacy in 2020 but withdrew prior to the primaries. In August 2020, Biden chose her as his running partner, and their ticket went on to win the November general election. On January 20, 2021, she was inaugurated as Vice President of the United States.
