We

got down with Mac to talk about his career, content, and creative process. Mac, who has eight years of online experience, has some useful suggestions for prospective artists.

Mac grew up watching famous YouTubers on his computer screen and idolising them. “They were like everything I couldn’t [be] when I was in middle school,” Mac remembers. I never went out after school with my buddies; instead, I would stay at home and watch [YouTube] videos… “I’ve always just looked at their life and thought it was pretty interesting how they simply do whatever they want.”

“I also performed theatre for a long time and things like that,” Mac continues. “I’ve always had the concept of making something of my own in the back of my mind.” It didn’t take long for that nebulous longing to materialise into something more concrete. “One random day, my buddy and I were conversing, and we came up with this idea for how we were going to take over the internet.”

As he recounts the plot, Mac chuckles. “We were both going to establish channels, and then they’d expand, and then we’d have a combined channel and, like, take over YouTube,” says one of them. While it may have begun as a dream, Mac immediately set his sights on becoming a YouTube celebrity. “I was like, ‘You know what, let’s try being YouTubers,'” she says. As a result, I produced my first video whereas she never did. And now, eight years later, here I am.”

MacDoesIt started with a recap of the 2012 Olympics, which is regrettably no longer accessible, but is a format that even his new admirers would recognise. “Since the beginning of my channel, I’ve been doing reviews. I’m not sure why I’m drawn to that concept, but it offers me something to speak about.”
Regardless of your personal identification, Mac pulls you in with his approachable, self-deprecating comedy. This comic, on the other hand, is not afraid to approach difficult issues that others may avoid. He is able to offer a genuine voice for this intersecting experience since he is black and homosexual.

“I was born and reared in the city of Los Angeles. These are subjects that would normally be discussed in a major metropolis. I’ve been living in a bubble for a long time. And it was while doing YouTube that I began to see how individuals in various regions of the globe — even in this nation — had very different lifestyles and are unable to fully enjoy their lives. So I was like, “You know what, let’s speak about it on my channel,” and that’s when it all changed.”

Mac began moving the material of MacDoesIt in that direction once he recognised what he had to offer. “Yeah, I can speak about this; this is so simple,” Mac recalls thinking. Many others can’t, and I’m in a very fortunate position to do it right now, so I may as well.”

While many people find it difficult to talk about race and sexuality, Mac utilises humour to get beyond this barrier. Comedy acts as an opener, allowing more difficult topics to be discussed. He attributes his ability to seamlessly switch between the absurd and the serious to his theatrical experience.

“I’ve been performing in musical theatre since the age of six.” And one of the things you learn doing theatre is how to break the ice. You’re constantly breaking the ice in some manner. You should always ice-break with all of your performers before getting into a serious subject or a serious speech.

So I think that the funny aspect of it, like the discussion’s icebreaker, makes people feel more comfortable having that conversation with me or listening to me speak about a serious subject. It doesn’t have to be such a severe situation.” “It’s a genuine discussion, not a serious conversation,” Mac says.

When discussing some of the issues on MacDoesIt, Mac might easily come off as didactic, but he avoids this because to his comic style, engaging personality, and fast-paced delivery. He keeps the audience interested. “It’s humour for me,” Mac explains, “and comedy is also the most readily digested form.” I came to the conclusion that if you can find a method to communicate a message via humour, you can be more effective than a newscaster, essentially, you know?”

He says, “I’m a really silly guy.” “I speak about important subjects all the time, but I’m also a little silly.” So I couldn’t simply sit down and film a video saying, ‘OK, here are the serious stuff.'” “I’m talking about this because,” Mac says, “they’re genuine.” “I try to convince folks that these aren’t simply serious problems; they’re genuine topics.” So, while you’re talking about them, speak about them as honestly as you can.”

“Oh no, I don’t plan that far ahead,” Mac says of his calendar, which lists out weeks’ worth of films. Oh, my gosh. It’s a little haphazard at times.” “I’ll be reading around the internet, or watching TV, or chatting to friends, and suddenly an idea will spring out in a discussion, and I’ll simply jot it down,” he says. But that’s about the extent of my planning. Most of the time, I’ll think of a video theme such as the week of the video.”

Mac’s filmmaking method is quite simple once he has decided on a theme. “I’ll come up with a theme, then plan a filming and uploading schedule… Then I’ll film that day, edit the video for two to three days, and post it at least three days after filming.” Mac doesn’t always get it right the first time: “I like to speak quickly sometimes, and then my theatre child smacks me in the face and says, wait, you gotta pronounce it better.”

“I sound like a broken record,” he acknowledges of the shooting process making him self-conscious at times. I had an apartment with a roommate, and I tried to keep them out of the flat while I was shooting so they wouldn’t hear me repeat myself.”

He sometimes needs to take a break and return to the camera later. “There have been a few occasions when I’ve made a video and I’m not in the greatest mood, and I can tell when I’m talking,” Mac adds. I’ll either go off on too many tangents or I’ll get furious for no apparent reason. Then I’m like, ‘OK, this isn’t the mood right now,’ and I’ll simply switch off the camera and try again the following day.”

MacDoesIt’s editing approach, which may be chaotic at times, is responsible for a lot of the hilarity. He also employs camera trickery to bring his films to life, such as the cloning effect. He claims that editing has grown simpler over time, but it still consumes a significant percentage of his production time.

“Because I’ve been filming longer films and editing them quickly, a movie that’s around 20 minutes long has roughly two hours of material… I believe that many individuals are unaware of this. At the very least, I film for a couple of hours… “However, the final output does not seem to be that way.”

Thankfully, editing isn’t as time-consuming as it formerly was. “There was a point when editing a whole film would take me a week,” Mac says, “because I simply didn’t grasp editing tools that well.” Having a collection of reused materials, “things I gather from friends and stuff I see on the internet,” has helped Mac speed up the process. This enables Mac to edit faster while also solidifying his comic identity in the minds of viewers.

His large sound and clip collection, on the other hand, does not suggest that he is well-organized. Most editing schools stress the need of identifying your work and maintaining a consistent file structure, but Mac opts for a more straightforward approach: he uses the search feature of his file browser: “On my computer, I’m not particularly organised, but I know the names of everything… so I simply search the titles.”

This just demonstrates that you do not have to follow established best practises if a different method works better for you. One of the benefits of working for yourself is that you can do anything you want. You are the only one who needs to comprehend your system. As a creative, all you have to do is figure out what works best for you.
