MacKenzie Scott Tuttle was born in San Francisco, California, on April 7, 1970, to a financial planner father and a housewife mother. She claims to have started writing seriously when she was six years old, when she authored The Novel Worm, a 142-page book that was lost in a flood. She graduated from Lakeville, Connecticut’s Hotchkiss School in 1988. Tuttle graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1992, where she studied under Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, who hailed Tuttle as “one of the greatest students I’ve ever had in my creative writing seminars.” She also assisted Morrison with research for his novel Jazz, published in 1992.
Scott sought for a research associate position at D. E. Shaw, a quantitative hedge fund in New York City, after graduation to “pay the bills while working on her novels.” Jeff Bezos, who was a vice president at the time, interviewed her. It was her first time meeting him during the interview. Scott’s debut novel, The Testing of Luther Albright, was published in 2005 and won an American Book Award in 2006. She stated it took her ten years to write since she was helping Bezos create Amazon while also giving birth to and raising three children. Her old instructor, Toni Morrison, called the book “a rarity: a brilliant narrative that tears and fills the heart.” Traps, her second book, was published this year. Scott and Bezos married in 1993, and in 1994, they left D. E. Shaw, relocated to Seattle, and founded Amazon. Scott was one of Amazon’s earliest workers, working on the company’s name, business strategy, accounts, and fulfilling early orders in the company’s early days. She also arranged the first freight deal for the firm. When Amazon began to thrive,Scott stepped back from the company, choosing to focus on her family and writing career. Scott signed the Giving Commitment in May 2019, a charitable-giving initiative in which she pledged to give away the majority of her money to charity during her lifetime or through her will; despite its name, the pledge is not legally enforceable. Scott revealed in a July 2020 Medium post that she has given $1.7 billion to 116 non-profit groups focused on racial equality, LGBTQ+ equality, democracy, and climate change.
Her donations to historically black schools and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, tribal colleges and universities, and other colleges total more than $800 million. Scott said in December 2020, less than six months later, that she had contributed another $4.15 billion to 384 groups in the preceding four months, with an emphasis on giving help to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic effect and tackling long-term systemic inequalities. She stated that following July, she wanted her advisory team to give away her money more quickly as the US dealt with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, while billionaires’ wealth continued to rise. “Identifying organisations with strong leadership teams and results, with special attention to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity, high projected food insecurity. Scott’s philanthropic donation in 2020 totaled $5.8 billion, making it one of the largest yearly contributions to functioning organisations by a private individual. Scott announced another $2.7 billion in donations to 286 organisations on June 15, 2021.
