Madonna Louise Ciccone (born August 16, 1958) is a singer, composer, and actor from the United States. She has been dubbed the “Queen of Pop” and is widely regarded as one of the most influential characters in popular culture. Madonna is known for her flexibility in music production, composition, and visual presentation.

She’s also noted for pushing the envelope of artistic expression in mainstream music while maintaining complete control over her career. Her works, which address social, political, sexual, and religious issues, have sparked debate as well as critical praise.Madonna relocated to New York City in 1978 to pursue a modern dance career. She soared to solo success with her debut studio album, Madonna, following stints as a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy (1983).

She went on to have a string of hits, including the all-time bestsellers Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986), and The Immaculate Collection (1990), as well as Grammy Award winners Ray of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2001). (2005). “Like a Virgin,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Like a Prayer,” “Vogue,” “Take a Bow,” “Frozen,” “Music,” “Hung Up,” and “4 Minutes” are just a few of Madonna’s numerous number-one songs.

Madonna’s popularity grew as a result of her involvement in films including Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Dick Tracy (1990), A League of Their Own (1992), and Evita (1993). (1996). While her performance in Evita earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, she received mixed reviews for her subsequent works.

Madonna established Maverick Records, one of the most successful artist-run labels in history, in 1992 as a businesswoman. Fashion labels, children’s books, fitness clubs, and filmmaking are some of her other business activities. She started the Ray of Light Foundation in 1998 and Raising Malawi in 2006.

Madonna is the best-selling female music artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records, having sold over 300 million records worldwide. She has the most number-one singles by a female artist in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, and is the most successful solo artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She is still the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time, with over US $1.5 billion in income from her concert tickets. In her first year of eligibility, Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. MTV and Billboard named her the greatest music video artist of all time, and VH1 named her the greatest woman in music.

Madonna was also named to Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists and Songwriters of All Time. Madonna met Dino D’Santiago, a local musician who exposed her to fado, morna, and samba players, while she was staying in Lisbon. She was motivated to produce her 14th studio album, Madame X, after they invited her to their “living room sessions” on a monthly basis.

Madonna

collaborated on the album with a number of musicians, most notably Mirwais and Mike Dean, two of her longstanding collaborators.  NME praised the album, calling it “bold, strange, self-referential, and unlike anything Madonna has ever done before.”  Madame X premiered at number one on the Billboard 200 in June 2019, earning her sixth top-selling album.

“Medelln”, “Crave”, “I Rise” and “I Don’t Search I Find” were all number one singles on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, extending her record for most number one entries on the chart. In May 2019, Madonna performed “Like a Prayer” and then “Future” alongside rapper Quavo as the Eurovision Song Contest’s intermission act.

On September 17, 2019, the Madame X Tour, an all-theatre tour of chosen cities in North America and Europe, began. Madonna imposed a no-phone policy in order to maximise the intimacy of the show, in addition to much smaller venues compared to her past tours. The tour brought approximately $51.4 million in ticket sales, according to Pollstar.

In December of same year, she began dating Ahlamalik Williams, a dancer who began touring with her in 2015 on the Rebel Heart Tour.  The Madame X Tour, however, was often cancelled due to her chronic knee ailment, and it was abruptly halted on March 8, 2020, three days before its scheduled finish date, as the French government outlawed gatherings of more than 1,000 people due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Madonna later revealed that she had tested positive for coronavirus antibodies and gave $1 million to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help fund research towards developing a new vaccine. Dua Lipa’s single “Levitating,” from her 2020 remix album Club Future Nostalgia, included guest vocals from Madonna and Missy Elliott.

Madonna discussed script ideas with writer Diablo Cody in an Instagram video she shared in August 2020. On an Instagram livestream the following month, she stated they were writing a film on her life, which will be produced by Amy Pascal.  Madonna enlisted screenwriter Erin Wilson to assist with the writing in June of 2021.

Madame X, a documentary film on Madonna’s tour of the same name, was released in October 2021 on Paramount+.  Madonna announced her return to Warner in a global partnership on her 63rd birthday, granting the label access to her entire recorded music catalogue, including the last three Interscope albums (which are ultimately controlled by Madonna’s company Boy Toy, Inc. and were only licenced to Interscope through Live Nation).

Madonna will begin a series of catalogue reissues in 2022 to mark the 40th anniversary of her music career, according to the terms of the deal. With a voice range of mezzo-soprano,  Madonna has always been self-aware of her voice. Despite not being a “heavyweight talent,” Madonna was described by Mark Bego, author of Madonna: Blonde Ambition, as “the right vocalist for lighter-than-air tunes.”

Tony Sclafani of MSNBC claims that “Madonna’s rock roots can be found in her singing. Madonna, like John Lennon and Bob Dylan, uses subtext, sarcasm, violence, and a variety of vocal quirks.”  Madonna’s early albums featured a bright, girlish vocal tone, which she abandoned in later albums. She made the modification to avoid being compared to “Minnie Mouse on helium” by critics.

Madonna had to undergo voice lessons while filming Evita (1996), which helped her to expand her range even more. She expressed her thoughts on the situation as follows: “For Evita, I worked with a vocal coach and discovered that I wasn’t using a significant portion of my voice. I used to think I only had a small range and that I would make the best of it.”

Madonna can play a variety of musical instruments in addition to singing. As a child, she was taught the piano for the first time.  Before joining the Breakfast Club line-up as the drummer, she learned to play drums and guitar from her then-boyfriend Dan Gilroy in the late 1970s.  She went on to play guitar in the band Emmy and on her own demo tapes.

Madonna didn’t perform with a guitar for several years after her initial success, but she is credited as playing cowbell on Madonna (1983) and synthesiser on Like a Prayer (1989).  Madonna spent three months learning to play the violin in preparation for her role as a violin teacher in the film Music of the Heart in 1999, but she dropped out before filming began.

During the promotion of Music (2000), Madonna decided to pick up the guitar again, and she enlisted the help of guitarist Monte Pittman.  Madonna has been playing guitar on all of her tours and studio albums since then. At the Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards in 2002, she was nominated for the Les Paul Horizon Award. Madonna is a paradox, according to Metz, because she is generally viewed as living her entire life as a show.

Her big-screen performances have been ridiculed, but her live performances have been lauded.  Madonna was the first artist whose concert tours were based on her music videos. The ability to recreate scenes from Madonna’s videos in a live context, according to author Elin Diamond, increases the reality of the original videos.

“Her live performances have become the vehicle by which mediatized representations have become naturalised,” she claimed.  Madonna’s concerts and live performances, according to Taraborrelli, are “extravagant show piece walking art show,” using multimedia, cutting-edge technology, and sound systems.

The New York Times’ Chris Nelson had this to say: “With shows that included not only lavish costumes and precisely timed pyrotechnics, but also extremely athletic dancing, performers such as Madonna and Janet Jackson set new standards for showmanship. Live singing was sacrificed to achieve these results.”

While Madonna gained a reputation for lip-syncing during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour, she has since reorganised her shows by “stay[ing] mostly still during her toughest singing parts and the dance routines to her backup troupe… rather than try to croon and dance up a storm at the same time,” according to Thor Christensen of The Dallas Morning News.

Madonna was one of the first to use hands-free radio-frequency headset microphones, which had the headset attached over the ears or the top of the head and the microphone capsule on a boom arm that extended to the lips, to allow for more flexibility when dancing and singing. The microphone design became known as the “Madonna mic” as a result of her widespread use.
