Manchester City Football Club is a Manchester-based English football club that competes in the Premier League, England’s top flight. It began as St. Mark’s (West Gorton) in 1880, then changed its name to Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. After playing at Maine Road since 1923, the club moved to the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester in 2003. In the first season of the club’s current iteration, in 1894, the club adopted its sky blue home shirts, which have been worn ever since.

Manchester City joined the Football League in 1892 and won the FA Cup in 1904. Under the management of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, the club won the League, European Cup Winners Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup for the first time in the late 1960s. The club went through a period of decline after losing the 1981 FA Cup Final, culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football for the first and only time in its history in 1998.

Since regaining promotion to the Premier League in 2001–02, they have remained a fixture in the competition since 2002–03. In 1899, City won the Second Division, and with it, promotion to the highest level of English football, the First Division. They won their first major trophy on April 23, 1904, when they defeated Bolton Wanderers 1–0 at Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup; City narrowly missed out on a League and Cup double that season after finishing second in the League, but they did become the first club in Manchester to win a major trophy.

The club was dogged by allegations of financial irregularities in the seasons following the FA Cup triumph, culminating in the suspension of seventeen players in 1906, including captain Billy Meredith, who later moved across town to Manchester United.  The main stand at Hyde Road was destroyed by fire in 1920, and the club moved to their new purpose-built stadium at Maine Road in Moss Side in 1923.

Pep Guardiola, a former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager, has been in charge since Manuel Pellegrini was fired in 2016.  Manchester City won the 2017–18 Premier League title with the highest points total in the league’s history, as well as breaking a slew of other club and league records along the way.

That year, they also won the EFL Cup, and Sergio Agüero became the club’s all-time goalscorer. In 2018–19, Guardiola led Manchester City to win the Premier League and the EFL Cup for the first time in the club’s history, marking the first successful title defence in the club’s history. The team then went on to win the FA Cup, completing an unprecedented treble of domestic men’s titles in England.

alleged breaches of the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations, UEFA banned the club from European competitions for two seasons in 2020; the club appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which overturned the ban within months, finding that some allegations were older than the five-year limit for such UEFA investigations, while others were unproven.

In addition, the CAS reduced UEFA’s fine from €30 million to €10 million. City, along with the other five “Big Six” English football clubs, joined the proposed European Super League as one of its twelve founding members in April 2021. The Football Association, the Premier League, UEFA, and FIFA, as well as the UK’s Conservative government and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, all condemned the announcement.

City announced their withdrawal from the Super League less than 48 hours after the initial announcement on April 20, and the other five English clubs followed suit shortly after. Only three of the original founders, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus, remained committed the next day, and it appeared that the proposal had failed.

City regained their Premier League title in the COVID-19-affected 2020–21 season, becoming champions for the third time in four years.  They finished the season with a twelve-point lead over second-placed Manchester United, winning the title by three games. They also won the EFL Cup for the record-tying fourth season in a row and eighth time overall, defeating Tottenham 1–0 in the final.

Guardiola’s tenth league and cup title in five years makes him the club’s most successful manager. The season was highlighted by City reaching their first-ever European Cup final, where they faced Chelsea, making it the competition’s third all-English final. The Citizens, on the other hand, were defeated 1–0 at the Estádio do Drago, thanks to a solitary Kai Havertz goal. Nonetheless, City’s breakthrough was the most successful European campaign it had ever had.

Manchester City wore shirts with a badge of the City of Manchester’s arms on occasions when they played in a major cup final as a symbol of pride in representing the city at a major event. This custom dates back to a time when players’ shirts did not usually have any kind of badge on them.

The club has since abandoned the practise; for the 2011 FA Cup Final, the club’s first in the twenty-first century, it used the standard badge with a special legend, but the Manchester coat of arms was included as a small monochrome logo in the numbers on the back of players’ shirts.

Because the previous badge was ineligible for trademark registration, a new club badge was adopted in 1997. The shield in front of a golden eagle was based on the arms of Manchester. The eagle is an old heraldic symbol of Manchester; in 1958, a golden eagle was added to the city’s badge (but has since been removed), representing the city’s growing aviation industry.

The shield has a ship on the upper half, which represents the Manchester Ship Canal, and three diagonal stripes on the lower half, which represent the city’s three rivers: the Irwell, Irk, and Medlock. The motto “Superbia in Proelio,” which translates to “Pride in Battle” in Latin, is found at the bottom of the badge. Three decorative stars are placed above the eagle and shield.

Following years of fan criticism of the 1997 badge’s design, the club announced on October 15, 2015 that they would hold a fan consultation on whether to scrap the club badge and replace it with a new one. Following the consultation, the club announced in late November 2015 that the current club badge would be replaced in the near future with a new version inspired by the older, circular variants.
