Manchester United Football Club is an English professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. It competes in the Premier League, the country’s top flight. The Manchester United Football Club, also known as “the Red Devils,” was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902, and relocated to its present stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

The Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot at Newton Heath established Manchester United in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. The squad began by playing games against other divisions and railway companies, but on November 20, 1880, they played their first recorded match, losing 6–0 to Bolton Wanderers’ reserve team while sporting the railway company’s green and gold colours. By 1888, the club had joined The Combination, a provincial football league, as a founder member. Newton Heath joined the recently created Football Alliance when the association was disbanded after just one season. The Football Alliance lasted three seasons before being combined into The Football League. As a result, the club was promoted to the First Division for the 1892–93 season, having gained independence from the railway company and dropping the “LYR” from its name. The club was relegated to the Second Division after two seasons.

Busby was convinced to briefly assume managerial duties after an eighth-place finish in the 1969–70 season and a disappointing start to the 1970–71 season, and McGuinness returned to his job as reserve team coach. Frank O’Farrell was appointed manager in June 1971, but he only served 18 months before being replaced by Tommy Docherty in December 1972. Docherty rescued Manchester United from relegation that season, only to see them relegated the next season; by then, Best, Law, and Charlton had already left the club. In 1976, the team gained promotion at the first time of asking and advanced to the FA Cup final, but were defeated by Southampton. In 1977, they advanced to the final for the second time, defeating Liverpool 2–1. Docherty was fired soon when, after his liaison with the wife of the club’s physiotherapist was revealed.

On the day of Atkinson’s departure, Alex Ferguson and his assistant Archie Knox arrived from Aberdeen and led the club to an 11th-place finish in the table. Despite finishing second in 1987–88, the club finished 11th the following season. Ferguson’s reputation was rescued by victory over Crystal Palace in the 1990 FA Cup Final replay (after a 3–3 draw) after he was on the brink of being fired. Manchester United won their first UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup the following season.

With that victory, United qualified for the European Super Cup for the first time, defeating European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade 1–0 in the final at Old Trafford. Following a 1–0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Wembley Stadium in a second successive League Cup final run in 1992, the club won the trophy for the first time. In 1993, the team secured its first league championship since 1967, and a year later, it won a second straight title – along with the FA Cup – for the first time since 1957, completing the club’s first “Double.” United went on to win both titles again in 1995–96, being the first English team to do so twice, before winning the championship title with a game to spare in 1996–97.

The treble trophies from Manchester United’s 1998–99 season are on display at the club’s museum. Manchester United made history by being the first side to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League all in the same season in 1998–99. Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjr scored late goals to give Liverpool a thrilling win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final, which is considered one of the best comebacks of all time. Since defeating Palmeiras 1–0 in Tokyo, the club became the first British side to win the Intercontinental Cup. Ferguson was knighted for his contributions to football later on.
