Marco Antonio Rubio is a lawyer and politician from Florida who now serves as the senior United States senator. He was previously the speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, where he was a Republican. Rubio ran for President of the United States as a Republican in 2016, winning presidential primaries in Minnesota, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico but failing to secure the nomination. Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, and is of Cuban ancestry.
He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 after serving as a municipal commissioner in West Miami during the 1990s. Following that, he was elected Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, a position he held for two years, beginning in 1995.
Mike Fasano, the House majority leader, appointed Rubio to one of two majority whips later in 2000. According to the National Journal, that position generally requires a lot of arm-twisting, but Rubio chose a different strategy, relying more on persuasion than coercion.
Due to conflicts with the House speaker, Fasano resigned as majority leader of the House in September 2001, and the speaker chose Rubio over a more experienced replacement for Fasano. Rubio agreed to help with redistricting, which he did by splitting the state into five areas and engaging with each legislator individually, and this work served to consolidate his position.
Rubio gave a speech to the House in 2005 in which he encouraged members to search in their desks for a hardback book titled 100 Innovative Ideas For Florida’s Future; however, the book was blank because it had not yet been written, and Rubio informed his colleagues that they would fill in the pages together with the help of everyday Floridians.
Rubio published the book in 2006 after touring around the state and interviewing residents and collating their opinions. This book was dubbed “the focus of Rubio’s early speakership” by the National Journal. Around 24 of the “ideas” were adopted into law, with another ten partially enacted. Among the artefacts from the collection.
On May 5, 2009, Rubio announced his intention to run for the United States Senate seat vacated by Mel Martinez, who had elected not to run for re-election and later resigned before the end of his term. Rubio spoke with fundraisers and supporters across the state before starting his candidacy. Rubio initially behind by double digits in the Republican primary against his own party’s incumbent governor, Charlie Crist, but later overtook Crist in polling for the nomination. Rubio garnered support from Tea Party activists during his campaign, many of whom were disgruntled with Crist’s policies as governor. Crist said on April 28, 2010, that he would run for president without the support of any political party.
