Marcus Rashford MBE (born 31 October 1997) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for Manchester United in the Premier League and for the England national team. Rashford has been a Manchester United player since he was seven years old, scoring two goals in his first-team debut against Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League in February 2016 and his Premier League debut three days later against Arsenal. He also scored in his EFL Cup and UEFA Champions League debuts, as well as in his first Manchester derby. Rashford has won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, FA Community Shield, and Europa League with United. Rashford became the youngest English player to score in his maiden senior international match when he scored on his England debut in May 2016. He was the tournament’s youngest player at the 2016 UEFA Euros, and he also represented England in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the United Kingdom, he is a crusader against homelessness and child malnutrition. Rashford has been commended for leveraging his influence to push societal change as a political activist and humanitarian. He has garnered considerable praise and appreciation for his efforts, as well as recognition from institutions and organisations both in and outside of athletics.
Due to an injury crisis that saw 13 players injured, Rashford was included to United’s 18-man squad for their UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg clash against Danish club Midtjylland on February 25, 2016. Rashford was selected to start the game when Anthony Martial was injured in the warm-up, and he made his first-team debut with two goals in the second half of a 5–1 victory. Rashford’s goals gave him Manchester United’s youngest ever scorer in European play, surpassing George Best’s record, which was eventually surpassed by Mason Greenwood in the 2019–20 season. Rashford made history on March 20 when he scored the only goal in the Manchester derby, his team’s first away league win over Manchester City since 2012; at the age of 18 years and 141 days, he became the Premier League’s youngest ever scorer in the fixture, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record by almost a year. Rashford produced a wonderful curled goal in a 2–1 win over West Ham United in the FA Cup sixth-round replay on April 13 to help United advance to the semi-final. Three days later, he scored the game’s sole goal against Aston Villa, who were relegated for the first time since 1987 as a result. Rashford was handed the number 19 by new manager José Mourinho for the coming season, confirming his place in the senior team. After signing experienced striker Zlatan Ibrahimovi, he was often forced to settle for a spot on the bench. On August 27, 2016, Rashford scored his first goal of the season against Hull City, scoring in the second minute of injury time after replacing Juan Mata in the 71st minute. The next month, he scored three more goals: on 18 September in a 3–1 league loss to Watford; on 21 September in a 3–1 EFL Cup third-round victory over Northampton Town; and on 24 September in a 4–1 league triumph over Leicester City.
Rashford made his second full senior season debut against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8, 2017, as a 46th-minute substitute in a 2–1 defeat. On the 13th of August, he made his debut in a 4–0 home triumph over West Ham United, giving the assist for Romelu Lukaku’s first goal. On August 26, three minutes after coming on as a substitute, Rashford scored his first goal of the season, the opening in a 2–0 win against Leicester. Rashford made his UEFA Champions League debut against Basel on September 12th, scoring the third goal in a 3–0 win, marking his sixth appearance in the competition. On September 20th, he scored a brace against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup. Following the release of Ibrahimovi, the club’s former number 10, Rashford was handed the squad number 10 ahead of the 2018–19 season. Teddy Sheringham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Wayne Rooney have already worn the jersey in the Premier League, and he was the third academy graduate to do so after Mark Hughes and David Beckham. Rashford was sent off in a 2–0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor on September 2nd after colliding heads with Phil Bardsley after barely 10 minutes on the pitch; Mourinho called him “naive” and blamed it on his lack of experience. Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports commentator, said on September 11 that Rashford will have to leave United in order to realise his full potential. Rashford signed a new four-year deal with Manchester United on July 1, 2019, which would keep him at the club until June 2023, with the option to extend for another year. Rashford scored a brace in Manchester United’s 4–0 triumph over Chelsea in the season’s first week. Following a period of poor form, Solskjr stated in September 2019 that he was unconcerned with Rashford’s bad form and lack of goals. Rashford returned to form in late October, scoring in a 1–1 North West derby tie, snapping Liverpool’s 17-match winning streak. Rashford scored and assisted against Norwich City the next week, and then scored a second brace against Chelsea in the EFL Cup the next week. Rashford scored his first goal of the season in a 3–2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on September 26, 2020. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2–1 away win over PSG in the first match of the 2020–21 Champions League on October 20, 2020. Rashford scored his first United hat-trick in a 5–0 win against RB Leipzig in the next Champions League match; it was just the second hat-trick ever scored by a United replacement, following manager Solskjr in the Premier League in 1999. He became the first United player since Robin van Persie in 2014 to score a hat-trick in the Champions League. Rashford assisted a goal for Pogba to score the game’s sole goal against Burnley on January 12, 2021, putting United on top of the table for the first time since the 2012–13 season. He scored the second goal in United’s Premier League record-tying 9–0 triumph over Southampton on February 2. Rashford made his 250th appearance for the club in a 1–0 FA Cup win against West Ham on February 9, becoming the club’s fourth youngest player to do so.
