Mark Christopher Butler (born 8 July 1970) is an Australian politician and member of the Australian Labor Party. Since 2019, he has represented the Hindmarsh electoral division in the Australian House of Representatives, having previously represented the Port Adelaide division from 2007 to 2019.
Butler was the South Australian secretary of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union before joining parliament (LHMU). Butler served in the Second Rudd Government as Minister for Climate Change and Minister for the Environment, Heritage, and Water. After the 2013 Federal Election, he became Shadow Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Water, and after the 2016 Federal Election, he became Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Water.Butler was elected the youngest-ever President of the Labor Party in South Australia in 1997, after becoming Secretary of the South Australian chapter of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union (LHMU) in 1996. Butler was a pivotal player in the Labor Party’s Left wing. He has a good working relationship with his NSW counterpart Anthony Albanese and has been a member of the ALP National Executive since 2000, representing the faction.  He would later serve as Albanese’s campaign manager in the Federal ALP Leadership election in October 2013. Butler was well known in South Australia for his cordial ties with the Labor Right, notably the then-secretary of the Shop, Distributive Labor. Butler was elected as a Labor Party member for the Port Adelaide electoral division in the 2007 Federal Election. Butler was named Parliamentary Secretary for Health in the First Rudd Ministry reshuffle of 2009. He was sworn in as the Second Gillard Ministry’s Minister for Mental Health and Ageing on September 14, 2010. He was assigned the additional role of Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Mental Health Reform on September 12, 2011. Butler’s portfolio was renamed Mental Health and Aged Care on December 14, 2011, and he was appointed to Cabinet.
