Wedgeworth, Marsha Blackburn was born in Laurel, Mississippi, to sales and management parents, Mary Jo and Hilman Wedgeworth. In high school, she won a beauty pageant. On a 4-H scholarship, Blackburn attended Mississippi State University and earned a B.S. in home economics in 1974.
Blackburn worked as a sales manager for the Times Mirror Company in 1973. She worked for Mercantile Stores, Inc.’s Castner Knott Division from 1975 to 1978. She founded Marketing Strategies, a promotion-event management firm, in 1978. She is still in charge of the company. Blackburn was a member of the Williamson County Young Republicans from its inception. From 1989 to 1991, she was the chair of the Williamson County Republican Party. She ran for Congress in 1992 and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention that year. She was defeated in the congressional election. Tennessee appointed Blackburn as executive director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment, and Music Commission in 1995.
Republican Ed Bryant resigned as U.S. Representative from Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District in 2002 to run for the Senate. She was elected to her third term in the House of Representatives in 2006. She ran unsuccessfully for Republican Conference Chair in November 2007. As a senior adviser, Blackburn worked on Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2008. In May 2007, she resigned from her position in the Romney campaign, bringing her career to an end.
Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam declined to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Bob Corker in October 2017. Shortly afterwards, Blackburn declared her candidacy for the seat. She stated in her announcement that House Republicans were frustrated with Senate Republicans, whom they believe act like Democrats on critical issues such as Obamacare. In announcing her candidacy, Blackburn described herself as a “hard-core, card-carrying Tennessee conservative,” claimed to be “politically incorrect,” and boasted that liberals had labelled her a “wingnut.” “No compromise, no apologies,” Blackburn said of compromise and bipartisanship. She also stated that she was carrying.
