Martin Trevor Heinrich is a politician and businessman who has served as the senior United States Senator representing New Mexico since 2013. Heinrich was born in Fallon, Nevada, but has spent most of his adult life in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From 2009 until 2013, he served as the Democratic Party’s representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district. In 2012, he won the Senate seat left vacant by retiring Senator Jeff Bingaman. Martin Trevor Heinrich was born in the Nevada town of Fallon, near Carson City. Shirley A. Heinrich, a seamstress, and Pete C. Heinrich, a power company lineman, are his parents. Heinrich Peter Karl Cordes was his father’s given name when he was born in Waldenburg, Germany, and he later adopted his stepfather’s surname, Olaf Heinrich. Martin Heinrich grew up in Cole Camp, Missouri, where he was raised as a Lutheran. He attended public schools in Cole Camp before transferring to the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1989. . Heinrich worked as an AmeriCorps member in New Mexico after a brief stint doing mechanical drawings. Heinrich was the executive director of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, a New Mexico nonprofit dedicated to educating young people about natural science and the environment, from 1996 to 2001. He started his own public relations consulting firm in 2002.
Heinrich was a member of the Albuquerque City Council from 2004 until 2008, serving as its president in 2006. He stated that his aims as a municipal councilman were to reduce crime, boost the minimum wage, and create new jobs. He also advocated for the use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Bill Richardson, the governor of Texas, was appointed to the position in February 2006.
Heinrich submitted papers to run for Congress in New Mexico’s 1st congressional district, which is based in Albuquerque, in 2008. He had intended to run against five-term Republican incumbent Heather Wilson, but Wilson withdrew to run for the United States Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Pete Domenici.
Heinrich defeated New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron, State Health Secretary Michelle Lujan Grisham, and U.S. Army veteran Robert Pidcock in the Democratic primary on June 4, 2008, with 44–25–24–8 percent. Heinrich ran against Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White in the general election, with Heinrich’s campaign focusing on his ties to President George W. Bush. Heinrich also called for energy independence and an enlightened energy policy.
