Marvel Studios, LLC formerly known as Marvel Films from 1993 to 1996 is an American film and television studio that is a branch of Walt Disney Studios. Marvel Studios is best known for producing the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, which are based on characters from Marvel Comics. Marvel Studios has released 24 films since 2008.

By 1993, Marvel Productions had changed its name to New World Animation, and Marvel would begin producing animated films.

Blade, based on the vampire hunter Blade, was Marvel Studios’ first packaged and licenced film. Stephen Norrington directed the picture, which starred Wesley Snipes as Blade. It was released on August 21, 1998, and grossed $70,087,718 in the United States and Canada, with a worldwide total of $131,183,530. The film X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer and released on July 14, 200, came after Blade.
David Maisel was hired as Marvel Studios’ chief operating officer in 2004 with a plan for the studio to self-finance films. Marvel engaged into a non-recourse debt agreement with Merrill Lynch, which was secured by the movie rights to a total of ten Marvel characters. Marvel was given $525 million to make a maximum of ten films based on its IP.Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, was the next picture licenced from Marvel Studios. On May 3, 2002, the picture was released in the United States and Canada, grossing $403,706,375 in the US and Canada, and $821,708,551 worldwide. The early success of Spider-Man led to a seven-figure advance for a sequel from the film’s studio. “Movies,” Arad said of the agreement.
