Mazie Keiko Hirono is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Hawaii in the United States Senate since 2013. She belongs to the Democratic Party. From 1981 to 1995, Hirono was a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, and from 1994 to 2002, he was Hawaii’s ninth lieutenant governor, serving under Ben Cayetano.
Mazie Hirono was born in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, on November 3, 1947, to Laura Chie Sat, a Japanese American, and Hirono Matabe, a World War II veteran. Mazie’s maternal grandpa, Hiroshi Sat, arrived in Hawaii at the age of 16 to work on a sugar plantation, and her grandmother, Tari Shinoki, arrived as a picture bride. [number four] The couple opened a bathhouse on River Street in Honolulu in 1928 after finding plantation work tough. Laura Chie was born in 1924, and Akira was born in 1925.
Tari returned to Japan in 1939 with Laura and Akira, while Hiroshi stayed in Hawaii for two more years to oversee the bathhouse before joining his family in 1941.
In a multi-member district with Democratic State Representative David Hagino, Hirono was elected to Hawaii’s 12th House district in 1980. Hawaii abolished multi-member districts, and she ran for and won the 20th House seat after redistricting. She ran for and won the newly redrawn Hawaii’s 32nd House district after redistricting again in 1984.
After redistricting, she ran in the newly redrawn 22nd House district of Hawaii in 1992. She received 91 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, which had three candidates. She was elected to the 22nd district in the general election and served only one term before retiring in 1994 to seek for statewide office.
On September 23, Hirono ran for the seat vacated by incumbent Ed Case in Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. The Democratic primary was extremely close. Seven of the 10 candidates had previously served in the Hawaii Legislature. Hirono had the advantage of being the only candidate who had previously served in a statewide post and thus had the most name recognition.
She also raised the most money, largely due to EMILY’s List’s backing, and lent her own campaign $100,000. With a plurality of 22% of the vote, she was elected. Senator Colleen Hanabusa came in second with 21% of the vote, 845 votes behind Hirono. Hirono defeated Republican State Senator Bob Hogue in the general election.
