The University of Miami Hurricanes are one of the most illustrious and accomplished football teams in NCAA history. Miami is tied with Southern California and Ohio State for fourth place in the All-Time Associated Press National Poll Championships, behind Alabama, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma.

Miami also holds a number of NFL Draft records, including the most first-round picks in a single draught and the longest streak of first-round picks in successive draughts. The Heisman Trophy has been won twice, and nine Hurricanes have been honoured into the College Football Hall of Fame. Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, serves as the team’s home venue. Miami had a 10–3 record last season.

On September 2, the Hurricanes opened the season with a 41–13 victory over Bethune–Cookman, an in-state FCS opponent.  The Hurricanes were scheduled to play Arkansas State on September 9, but the game was postponed due to Hurricane Irma, which wreaked havoc on Florida that weekend.

Despite the fact that the game was scheduled to take place in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the University of Miami administration said that owing to the hurricane’s ferocity, the football team would be unable to safely travel in and out of Florida. The Arkansas State University administration filed a lawsuit after Miami failed to reschedule the game and pay the $650,000 it pledged to pay the Red Wolves.

As a result of the postponement, Miami only played 11 regular-season games in 2017, rather than the usual 12.Due to the hurricane’s aftermath, Miami’s game against Florida State was moved from September 16 to October 7.  Miami defeated Toledo 52–30 in its second game of the season on September 23. Richt’s team upset archrival Florida State by a score of 24–20 after defeating Duke by a score of 31–6. The Hurricanes defeated Syracuse by a score of 27–19, following a thrilling 25–24 triumph over Georgia Tech.

Miami beat North Carolina 24–19 on October 28. They then beat No. 13 Virginia Tech 28–10 in the next game.Richt’s team thrashed Notre Dame by a score of 41–8 on November 11th.  Following a 44–28 victory against Virginia, Miami fell to Pittsburgh 24–14 in the regular-season finale.

was thrashed 38–3 by No. 1 Clemson in the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game. The Hurricanes accepted a spot in the 2017 Orange Bowl, where they were defeated 34–24 by No. 6 Wisconsin. Richt’s contract was extended for another five years by the University of Miami administration on May 3, 2018.

Miami finished the season with a 35–3 loss to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl, ending 7–6. Richt suddenly stepped down from coaching on December 30, 2018. Manny Diaz was hired as Miami’s next head coach on the same day Richt announced his resignation. Diaz, a Miami native, had been the team’s defensive coordinator for the previous three seasons until being hired as Temple’s head coach 17 days before Richt retired.

In three seasons at the university, Diaz went 21–15. Diaz was fired on December 6, 2021, in advance of the hiring of Mario Cristobal, the head coach of the Oregon Ducks and a former Cane. The series became one of college football’s most prestigious rivalries during the 1980s and 1990s. [required citation] Between 1983 and 2002, the Hurricanes and Seminoles won seven national championships and appeared in 14 bowl games in which a national championship was on the line.

On the combined rosters, the 1988 game included 57 future NFL stars. The colleges have been league adversaries since 2004, when Miami departed the Big East to join the larger 12-member Atlantic Coast Conference. Should each club win their respective divisions in any given season, the two teams could meet again in the ACC Championship Game. After 14 years of ACC Championship Games, no such rematch has yet to take place.

The 2006 Miami–Florida State game was the most-watched regular-season or playoff college football game in ESPN history, and the 2009 and 1994 matchups were the second- and fifth-most watched regular-season games, respectively. The Miami Hurricanes have a 33–30 record in this series. On October 6, 2018, the Miami Hurricanes won 28–27 in their most recent matchup.

With a 29–26 record against Florida, Miami leads the all-time series 29–26. From 1944 through 1987, the two schools played each other every year, but they haven’t played since. With the exception of Florida State, the annual series was cancelled after the 1987 season, when the Southeastern Conference’s requirement that member schools play eight conference games prompted the University of Florida to fill out the non-conference portion of its schedule with teams that did not require a home-and-home arrangement.

Miami won all six games between the two schools between 1986 and 2003, including the 2001 Sugar Bowl and the 2004 Peach Bowl. With a 26–3 triumph over the Hurricanes in 2008, Florida ended a 23-year losing streak against Miami. In 2019, the series resumed in Orlando, Florida, with Florida winning the Camping World Kickoff 24–20. On November 13, 1953, in Miami, the Hurricanes and the Hokies clashed for the first time.

The rivalry began when the Hokies joined the Big East Conference for football in 1991, and the two teams have met every year since 1992. Miami and Virginia Tech both joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) when it expanded in 2004. As members of the ACC’s Coastal Division, both teams compete every year. In the 1966 Liberty Bowl and the 1981 Peach Bowl, Miami and Virginia Tech faced off in bowl games.

Through the 2019 season, Miami leads the series 22–15. With a 58-game winning streak at the Orange Bowl, Miami holds the NCAA record for the longest home winning streak. The run began on October 12, 1985, with a 38–0 shutout win against Cincinnati, and ended on September 24, 1994, with a 38–20 loss to Washington.

Because of the Orange Bowl’s ties to the Big 8, the 58-game winning streak includes three Orange Bowl triumphs in which Miami was the visiting team. Miami has broken four streaks of 20 games or more in its history, in addition to its own great winning runs. Princeton is the only other team that has broken four 20-game winning streaks. Miami earned their first national championship with a 31–30 victory over top-ranked Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl, ending Nebraska’s 22-game winning streak.

When the Hurricanes defeated the Sooners, 20–14, in the 1988 Orange Bowl, they ended Oklahoma’s 20-game winning streak and earned their second national championship. On November 25, 1989, the Hurricanes beat top-ranked Notre Dame 27–10 to snap their 23-game winning run. When Miami defeated the third-ranked Bruins 49–45 on December 5, 1998, it snapped UCLA’s 20-game winning run.
