Michael Bennet is an American businessman, lawyer, and politician. He was appointed to the seat as a member of the Democratic Party after Senator Ken Salazar became Secretary of the Interior. He was born in New Delhi, India, on November 28, 1964.
Bennet grew raised in Washington, D.C., where his father worked as an advisor to Vice President Hubert Humphrey and other high-ranking officials. Because of his dyslexia, he was held back in second grade. He was a page on Capitol Hill and attended St. Albans School, an exclusive all-boys preparatory school.
Bennet received his Bachelor of Arts in history from Wesleyan University, his father’s and grandfather’s alma mater, in 1987. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi at Wesleyan. Bennet received his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was the Yale Law Journal’s Editor-in-Chief.
He worked as an advisor to Ohio Governor Richard Celeste from 1988 to 1990, when he departed to attend Yale. He worked as a legal clerk for the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and as an associate for Washington, D.C. attorney Lloyd Cutler after graduating from law school. During the Bill Clinton administration, he worked as Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General. Douglas Bennet, his father, was an Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs in the Clinton White House. Bennet quit the legal business after a time as an assistant to the United States attorney in Connecticut and relocated to the West. In 1997, he relocated to Colorado with his fiancée after a brief stay in Montana. Bennet worked for the Anschutz Investment Firm in Denver for six years, where he oversaw the reorganisation of an oil company and assisted in the consolidation of three movie theatre networks into the Regal Entertainment Group.
Bennet befriended fellow Wesleyan student John Hickenlooper while working for Anschutz, helping him on his successful campaign for mayor of Denver. Bennet returned to public service as Hickenlooper’s Chief of Staff for two years.
