Michael Joseph Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer who lived from August 29, 1958, through June 25, 2009. He is considered as one of the most influential cultural leaders of the twentieth century, having been dubbed the “King of Pop.” His contributions to music, dance, and fashion, as well as his publicised personal life, helped him become a global icon in popular culture over the course of a four-decade career.

Jackson impacted musicians from all kinds of music; through his stage and film appearances, he popularised sophisticated dance techniques like the moonwalk, which he named after himself, and the robot. He holds the record for the most Grammy Awards ever given to a single musician.

Jackson made his professional debut in 1964 as a member of the Jackson 5 alongside his older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon (later known as the Jacksons). While working at Motown Records, Jackson launched his solo career in 1971. With his 1979 album Off the Wall, he became a solo artist. His music videos for “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller” from his 1982 album Thriller are recognised with shattering racial barriers and elevating the medium into an artform and commercial tool.

With videos for the albums Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I, he helped to fuel MTV’s popularity and continued to innovate (1995). Thriller went on to become the best-selling album of all time, while Bad was the first album to have five number-one songs on the Billboard Hot 100. 1 nb

Because of his shifting appearance, relationships, conduct, and lifestyle, Jackson became a figure of controversy and intrigue in the late 1980s. He was charged in 1993 with sexually abusing a family friend’s child. Jackson was not indicted owing to a lack of evidence, therefore the case was resolved out of civil court.

He was prosecuted and acquitted of additional allegations of child sexual assault and several other crimes in 2005. In both cases, the FBI found no evidence that Jackson was involved in any criminal activity. Jackson died of an overdose of propofol supplied by his personal physician, Conrad Murray, in 2009, while rehearsing for a series of comeback concerts called This Is It. Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in 2011.

His first major concerts since the HIStory World Tour in 1997, the shows were to be his first significant performances since then. After the gigs, Jackson hinted that he would retire. The original intention was to hold ten concerts in London, followed by performances in Paris, New York City, and Mumbai. The first ten shows, according to Randy Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live, are expected to bring in £50 million.

Following record-breaking ticket sales of more than one million in less than two hours, the London residency was expanded to 50 dates.  From July 13, 2009, through March 6, 2010, the concerts were scheduled to take place. In the weeks preceding up to the tour, Jackson relocated to Los Angeles, where he rehearsed with choreographer Kenny Ortega, with whom he had previously collaborated on prior tours.
