Major League Soccer club Minnesota United FC is headquartered in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and competes in the Western Conference. There was a North American Soccer League franchise of the same name that was renamed the New York Cosmos in 2017.

Two seasons in the MLS were spent playing at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, where the team’s home games were held. Allianz Field, in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul, became the city’s fourth professional sports franchise in the spring of 2019, joining the Minnesota Wild, the St. Paul Saints, and the Minnesota Whitecaps.

UnitedHealth Group ex-CEO Bill McGuire heads the ownership of Minnesota United FC, which also includes the Pohlad family, owners of the Twins; Glen Taylor of the Timberwolves; and his daughter Wendy, who owns a hospitality company.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced on March 25, 2015, that Minnesota United would be the league’s 23rd team and awarded the franchise to a group led by McGuire. Jim Pohlad, the owner of the Minnesota Twins, Glen Taylor, owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Glen Nelson, a Wild investor, are part of the ownership group. Mark and Zygi Wilf, owners of the Minnesota Vikings, had a competing bid.  A year or two later, if Los Angeles FC isn’t ready to play in 2017, Garber suggested Minnesota will step in.

New NFL stadium construction was approved in May 2012 by the Minnesota Legislature, which gave the Vikings a five-year exclusive window to host games for MLS at the new stadium,  including the right to pursue an MLS franchise.  Minnesota Senator Tom Bakk contacted Major League Soccer to advise them that the state legislature would not be funding a soccer-specific stadium, and Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges endorsed the Wilfs’ plan.

Garber stated that the league preferred an “outdoor, soccer-specific stadium” with 20,000 seats “playing on grass” rather than a larger covered venue with artificial turf like U.S. Bank Stadium, and McGuire had the support of Hennepin County Commissioner Mike Opat and at least three members of the Minneapolis City Council.

The team’s first MLS encounter was a 5-1 loss at Providence Park against the Portland Timbers on March 3, 2017. The defeat was the worst for an expansion team on their first outing. No MLS expansion team had previously fallen by more than two goals in their first game. The team’s first MLS goal was scored by Christian Ramirez, who is now a free agent.

When Atlanta United FC came to town for their home opener against Atlanta United FC on the following Saturday, the kickoff temperature was just 19 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).  As a result of their 6–1 defeat, Minnesota now holds the record of any expansion team’s most lopsided loss and is the only MLS team to have allowed five or more goals in consecutive games.

When Manchester United’s first four games of the season ended in defeats against Colorado Rapids and New England Revolution, they had allowed 18 goals, which is an MLS record for the first six games of the season. On April 1, the squad beat Real Salt Lake 4–2 at home to earn their first MLS victory.  The team evolved along with the season. After acquiring Ethan Finlay from Columbus in the middle of the season, the Minnesota Wild made a number of additions in an effort to enhance their team. United finished tenth in the conference at the end of the season.

Darwin Quintero became Minnesota United’s first Designated Player on March 31, 2018. Quintero scored a hat trick for the first time in Minnesota United’s history on July 4, 2018, against Toronto FC.

On December 7, 2018, Minnesota United and Forward Madison FC signed a one-year affiliation deal.  It was Minnesota’s first participation in a final since entering MLS on August 27, 2019, when they faced Atlanta United in the U.S. Open Cup final at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Atlanta prevailed 2–1 in the match.
