Minneapolis is home to the Minnesota Vikings, a professional American football team. They are a member of the NFC North division in the National Football League (NFL).  The team began play the following year after being founded in 1960 as an expansion team. They’re named after ancient Scandinavian vikings, in honour of Minnesota’s prominent Scandinavian American culture. U.S. Bank Stadium, in Minneapolis’ Downtown East neighbourhood, is where the team plays its home games.

The Vikings have an overall record of 516–442–11, the highest regular season and combined winning percentage among NFL franchises without a Super Bowl title, as well as the most playoff runs, division titles, and Super Bowl appearances (tied with the Buffalo Bills). They are also one of three non-winning Super Bowl teams to have appeared in a conference championship every decade since the 1970s (along with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Rams).

The Vikings have the most playoff losses in NFL history, with 30. They are the only team with winning regular season and combined records that has not won a Super Bowl.Metropolitan Stadium, in suburban Bloomington, was the team’s home from 1961 to 1981. Bemidji State University hosted the Vikings’ summer training camp from 1961 to 1965. The team relocated to Minnesota State University in Mankato for their training camp in 1966.

Minnesota State’s training camp was one of the NFL’s longest-running and is remembered as part of the team’s golden era. From 1982 to 2013, the Vikings’ home games were held at Minneapolis’ Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Vikings finished the season with a 14–13 victory over the Detroit Lions at the Metrodome on December 29, 2013.

The Vikings have had one of the best winning percentages in the NFL since their inaugural season in 1961.They have won at least three games in every season since 1962, with the exception of 1962, and are one of only seven NFL teams to win at least 15 games in a season. Before the league’s merger with the American Football League (AFL) in 1970, the Vikings only won one NFL Championship, in 1969.  [16] The team has made the playoffs 28 times since the merger, which is the third most in the league (trailing only the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers). The team competed in Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX, and XI but did not win any.

also lost five of their last six NFC Championship Game appearances, dating back to 1978. In the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Vikings have 15 members. In 2017, the Vikings won the NFC North for the second time in three years, going 13–3 and earning the second seed in the NFC playoffs. The New Orleans Saints were their opponent in the divisional round. The Vikings lined up on 3rd-and-10 on their own 39-yard line with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game and trailing by a single point.

Quarterback Case Keenum threw the ball to wide receiver Stefon Diggs near the right sideline, giving him a chance to get out of bounds with just enough time for a game-winning field goal attempt; however, safety Marcus Williams failed to make the tackle, allowing Diggs to run down the sideline unopposed for the first walk-off game-winning touchdown in NFL playoff history. The game was dubbed the “Minneapolis Miracle” by radio announcer Paul Allen on KFAN 100.3.

The Vikings advanced to the NFC Championship game, where they were defeated 38–7 by the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, denying them the chance to play in Super Bowl LII in their own stadium.Kirk Cousins, the Vikings’ quarterback, signed a three-year, $84 million deal with the team on March 15, 2018.Cousins became the highest-paid football player in the league as a result of the deal.

The Vikings defeated the Oakland Raiders on September 22, 2019, for their 500th victory as a franchise, giving them an overall record of 500-427-11.The team finished the season with a 10–6 record, good enough for a wild card berth. The Vikings then defeated the New Orleans Saints 26–20 in overtime in the wild card round. With the win, the team advanced to the divisional round, where they were defeated 10–27 by the eventual NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers. The Minnesota Vikings were knocked out of the playoffs in 2020 after losing to the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Day.

In 2020, the Vikings finished 7-9 for the first time since 2014 and only the second time under Zimmer. After a 37-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 in 2021, the Vikings missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The team fired head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman on January 10, 2022, after winning 31-17 against the Chicago Bears in Week 18 to finish the season 8-9. The Vikings reportedly requested an interview with Catherine Raiche,

Vice President of Football Operations for the Philadelphia Eagles, for the position of general manager on January 13, 2022. If Raiche is hired, she will be the first female general manager in the NFL since Susan Tose Spencer led the Eagles from 1983 to 1985. During the team’s annual NFL Draft party on April 25, 2013, the Minnesota Vikings unveiled their new uniforms.

For warm-weather games from 1969 to 1973, the Vikings wore a purple alternate jersey with no stripes. In 2006, the team’s uniforms were redesigned for the first time in its 46-year history. Trim lines were added to the outside shoulders and sleeves, as well as the sides of the jerseys and pants, despite the fact that the team colours remained the same. The helmet’s horn was also a little more defined. Both white and purple pants are included in the new design; the purple pants haven’t been worn regularly since 2007, but they did make an appearance twice in 2010.

For the final four games of the 1978 season, the team wore black armbands in honour of assistant coach Jack “Jocko” Nelson, who died during the season. A 25-year patch was worn on the team’s jerseys in 1985. They wore a “40 for 60” patch in 1989 to commemorate the 1969 NFL champions. In 1995, a 35-year patch was worn, followed by a 40-year patch in 2000, and a 45-year patch in 2005. In 1999, they wore patches for assistant coach Chip Myers, who died during the offseason, and in 2001, they wore patches for Korey Stringer, who died during the season. In 1969 and 1994, the Vikings, like the rest of the NFL, wore 50th and 75th anniversary patches.

In the 2018 NFL season, they also wore “TS” decals on their helmets in honour of offensive line coach Tony Sparano, who died before the season began. In the 2016 NFL season, all 32 teams were given “Color Rush” uniforms, which were designed specifically for Thursday Night Football games. The Vikings wore an all-purple uniform with gold numbers and stripes on the pants for only one game, against the Dallas Cowboys at home in Week 13.

Against the Washington Redskins in the 2019 season, the Vikings wore their old Color Rush jerseys. “Primetime Purple” was their nickname for this game. The Vikings wore all purple against the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs of the 2019 season, but instead of wearing the regular alternates, they wore the regular home uniforms with the away purple pants.

The Skol Chant is a cheer performed at Minnesota Vikings games at U.S. Bank Stadium. In response to the beat of a drum, fans raise their hands above their heads and yell “Skol.”  The chant is a modified version of the Viking War Cry, which is used by Iceland’s national football team and was popularised by Iceland fans during the 2016 UEFA Euros.

Skol (written “skl” in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, “skál” in Faroese and Icelandic, or “skaal” in archaic spellings or transliteration of any of those languages) is a Danish–Norwegian–Swedish word for “cheers” or “good health,” a salute or a toast, as to an admired person or group.

The Gjallarhorn is played during the Vikings’ pre-game ceremonies during home games, a tradition that dates back to 2007. The event has served as a platform to honour past Viking greats (most notably Randy Moss) as well as Minnesota-related individuals (such as the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs men’s ice hockey team, which won the NCAA hockey championship).

Because of below-zero temperatures (the Vikings were playing at Huntington Bank Stadium, an outdoor stadium at the time), the first horn cracked right before the start of the 2016 playoff game in Minnesota against the Seattle Seahawks. Todd Johnson, a general manager at a music store, was responsible for both the first and second horns.
