Nelly Kim Furtado ComIH ( born December 2, 1978) is a singer-songwriter from Canada.Whoa, Nelly! (2000), her trip hop-inspired debut album, was a critical and commercial success, yielding two Billboard Hot 100 top-10 singles, “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn Off the Light.” She received a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the first of the two hits.

Folklore, Furtado’s introspective folk-heavy second album, was released in 2003 and focused on her Portuguese heritage. The album’s hits were moderately successful in Europe, but the album’s underperformance compared to her first was viewed as a sophomore slump.Loose (2006), Furtado’s third album, was a blockbuster hit and became her best-selling album, selling over 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of the decade.

Furtado continued to explore her Portuguese roots while leaning more into hip hop, which was considered a radical image reinvention. “Promiscuous,” “Maneater,” “Say It Right,” and “All Good Things (Come to an End)” were the album’s four successful number-one singles worldwide. During the same period, her Timbaland collaboration “Give It to Me” (2007) topped the US and international charts. “Broken Strings,” a highly lauded duet between Furtado and James Morrison, also charted in Europe in 2008.

She earned a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album for her debut Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, in 2009. Furtado’s fifth album, The Spirit Indestructible, was released in 2012, and it was nostalgically inspired. Furtado parted ways with her management and went solo, releasing The Ride, her sixth indie-pop album, in 2017 on her own label, Nelstar Entertainment.

Furtado was born in the British Columbia city of Victoria on December 2, 1978. António José Furtado and Maria Manuela Furtado, her Portuguese parents, were born in the Azores’ So Miguel Island in the late 1960s and came to Canada.  Nellie Kim, a Soviet gymnast, was the inspiration for the name Nelly.  Michael Anthony and Lisa Anne are her half-brothers. They were brought up in a Roman Catholic household.

She started acting and singing in Portuguese when she was four years old. Furtado made her first public appearance at a church on Portugal Day, singing a duet with her mother. She began learning trombone, ukulele, guitar, and keyboards at the age of nine. She began creating songs at the age of 12 and marched in a Portuguese marching band as a youngster.

Furtado credits her strong work ethic to her family; she spent eight summers working as a chambermaid in Victoria alongside her mother, brother, and sister. “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better),” The Spirit Indestructible’s first single, was published digitally on April 17, 2012 and transmitted to North American radio stations on May 1, 2012.

The song was a commercial success in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands, but it struggled in other markets. The title tune and second single charted in Germany and Slovakia, and reached number 79 on the Hot 100 in Japan. “Parking Lot” and “Waiting for the Night,” two more singles, charted in Canada and a few European countries.

On

“The Edge,” Furtado reunited with hip-hop producer Salaam Remi, who had previously collaborated with him on the 2010 single “Night Is Young.” The Tiger Woods cheating controversy, which was initially referred to as “Elin’s Song,” is said to have impacted the lyrics for the Salaam Remi produced track.

On her Indestructible Spirit Tour, Furtado supported the album. Furtado starred in the romantic comedy film A Date with Miss Fortune as a small supporting character in 2016. On February 14, 2016, at the 2016 NBA All-Star Game in Toronto, Furtado sang the Canadian national anthem (this was the second time Furtado had performed at the NBA All-Star Game, also having performed “O Canada” at the 2004 NBA All-Star Game).

In the same month, she started teasing new music on social media, implying that the album would be linked to Dallas, Texas, where much of the album was produced.  Furtado worked on the track “Hadron Collider” with Dev Hynes in 2016.Hynes’ album Freetown Sound includes the single. Furtado published “Behind Your Back” exclusively on Spotify in July 2016, referring to it as a “appetiser” for her upcoming album.

In an interview with CBC Player after the release, Furtado revealed that her album is finished and that she has recorded 16 tracks with John Congleton, but that the CD will only contain 12. Furtado revealed the title of his new album, The Ride, on September 8, 2016, and it was released in March 2017.

During the interview, she also confirmed the release of “Islands of Me,” a new single from the album that was published on streaming services on September 10, 2016. On November 8, 2016, the album’s first single, “Pipe Dreams,” was posted on SoundCloud, along with a brief teaser trailer for the album on YouTube.

In May 2018, Metro re-recorded Furtado’s vocals on the cover song “Sticks & Stones” from her album. It went on to be the number one dance club song on the Billboard chart.  StoneBridge, Bimbo Jones, Manuel Riva, and Cristian Poow are among the artists who have remixed the track. Furtado and her daughter, Nevis Chetan, were born on September 20, 2003.

Jasper Gahunia, Furtado’s lover since 2001 and a close friend for many years, is the father of the child. The couple split up in 2005, but according to Furtado, they remain close friends and share joint responsibility for Nevis’s upbringing.Furtado married Demacio Castellon, a sound engineer with whom she worked on Loose, on July 19, 2008.

Furtado revealed her separation from Castellon during the summer of 2016 and that she is now single during an appearance on the British daytime panel show Loose Women in April 2017.  Furtado revealed she has two more children on her Instagram bio in December 2021.  When asked if she had written any books, she said yes in a June 2006 interview with Genre magazine “”Absolutely,” responded Furtado, “I’ve always felt a connection to women.” Women are stunningly attractive and seductive “,

Some saw this as a declaration of bisexuality, however she later clarified that she was “straight but very open-minded” in August 2006. Furtado said in November 2006 that she had declined a payment of $500,000 to photograph totally dressed in Playboy. Furtado lives in Toronto and New York City as of March 2017.

Furtado said she had bought an apartment in New York City in an interview with DIY magazine in April 2017. Canada’s Flare and Elle, Russia’s Elle Girl, Hungary’s Shape, Portugal’s Vogue, Germany’s Maxim, and the United States’ Teen People, Vanidades, and YM have all featured Furtado on the cover of their respective fashion magazines. She’s graced the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine in multiple different countries (Turkey, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia and Hungary).

In 2002, Cosmopolitan magazine named her as one of the “Fun and Fearless Females.” Furtado sings in the range of mezzo-soprano. It has been described as “soaring” by Kristie Rohwedder of Bustle Magazine, and “nasally” by Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine.  Furtado listened to a wide range of musical genres during her childhood and youth, including mainstream R&B, hip hop, alternative hip hop, drum and bass, trip hop, world music (including Portuguese fado, Brazilian bossa nova, and Indian music), and others.

Ani DiFranco was her major inspiration as a kid, according to her “I wanted to be Ani DiFranco when I was a teen. Corporate music was never something I aspired to do.”  Madonna, Mariah Carey, Blondie, Prince, The Police, Eurythmics, Talking Heads, De La Soul, TLC, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Amália Rodrigues, Caetano Veloso, Juanes,

Jeff Buckley, Esthero, Björk, Cornershop, Oasis, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, U2 and Beck are among her many influences.  Furtado’s music has also been affected by her present residency, Toronto, which she describes as “the world’s most heterogeneous metropolis” and a place where she “can be any culture.”

She has stated that she did not have to wait for the Internet revolution to learn about world music; she began listening to it when she was five years old and continues to find new genres. Lorde, Slayyyter,Dua Lipa[107] and Gia Woods have all cited Furtado’s work as an influence.
