Gabriele Susanne Kerner was born on March 24, 1960, in Hagen, West Germany, to parents who resided in Breckerfeld. She spent her early years in Breckerfeld and then in Hagen. She got her moniker while on vacation with her folks in Mallorca, Spain. She dropped out of high school before graduating in 1977 and went on to study goldsmithing for the next three years.
After the band broke up in 1987, Nena began dating Swiss actor Benedict Freitag, the son of German actress Maria Becker and Austrian-Swiss actor Robert Freitag. The couple produced three children together, the first of whom, Christopher Daniel, was born handicapped, purportedly as a result of medical errors during Nena’s delivery, which caused her to fall into cardiac arrest. He died when he was 11 months old.
Larissa Maria and Sakias Manuel, twins, were born in 1990. After her divorce from Freitag, Nena began dating Stuttgart-based percussionist and music producer Philipp Palm, with whom she had two children, Samuel Vincent (1995) and Simeon Joel (1999). (1997). The family presently resides in Hamburg with their four children. Nena became a grandma on Christmas Day 2009, when Larissa gave birth to a daughter named Carla Maria. Sakias, Nena’s son, became a father to a kid called Noah only two days later. In September 2013, a third grandchild was born, followed by a fourth in May 2018.
Nena’s twins Sakias and Larissa have been backing vocalists on live and on her recordings since 2010, while her youngest son Simeon has been playing keyboards on stage since 2015.
Nena’s musical career began on July 2, 1979, when guitarist Rainer Kitzmann created The Stripes and encouraged her to apply for the lead singer role after seeing her dancing at a local disco. The Hagen-based band sang English-language songs and had a little hit with “Ecstasy,” but they never gained widespread recognition and split on March 3, 1982. However, Nena was offered a record deal by The Stripes’ record label, CBS, provided she would go to Berlin and write music with German lyrics. Nena and her then-boyfriend Rolf Brendel relocated to West Berlin in May 1982, where they met future band members Carlo Karges on guitar, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen on piano, and Jürgen Dehmel on bass. They created the band Nena together. They released their debut song, “Nur geträumt,” in June 1982, and it became an instant smash in Germany following their appearance on the German television programme Musikladen on August 21, 1982. The record was said to have sold 40,000 copies the day after it debuted on the show, and it peaked at No. 2 in the German charts.
The band’s debut album, Nena, was released in 1983 and featured the songs “99 Luftballons” and “Leuchtturm.” In 1983, “99 Luftballons” became a number one hit in West Germany and the Netherlands, and went on to huge worldwide chart success the following year, with an English version reaching No. 1 in the United Kingdom and the original German version reaching No. 2 in the United States, behind Van Halen’s “Jump.”
Nena’s 20th anniversary was commemorated on stage in 2002 with the release of the album Nena feat. Nena, a compilation of freshly arranged recordings of the band’s 1980s songs produced by Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen. Nena made a “comeback” with this album, which yielded a number of popular chart entries. In 2003, the English-German duet “Anywhere, Anywhere, Anytime” with Kim Wilde was a hit in several European nations, reaching No. 1 in the Netherlands and Austria, and No. 3 in Germany.
Nena’s albums have been released by her own record label, The Laugh & Peas Company, since 2009, and it also supports the work of her daughter’s band and Sharron Levy, one of her protégés from The Voice of Germany.
Nena released a new song, “Wir sind wahr,” on September 18, 2009, and a new album, Made in Germany, on October 2. The autobiographical ballad from the album “In meinem Leben” earned her fourteenth top 10 success in Germany, propelling her to the 12th spot in the all-time list of top 10 singles in Germany, making her the third highest-ranking German artist and the top-ranking German female. She also teamed with Die Atzen, a prominent techno-rap group, on a new tune called “Strobo Pop.” In 2011, she provided vocals to Kevin Costner and Modern West’s song “Let Go Tonight.”
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Nena’s early live engagements in 2020 were cancelled, but she was replaced in July of that year by the “Niemand hält uns auf” series of 12 drive-in, “picnic,” and “360” concerts staged in conformity with Germany’s current social distancing restrictions. In February 2021, during a debate in Germany on how COVID-19 restrictions should be lifted, Nena sparked controversy by stating, “There will be no two-class society at my concerts. You’re all always welcome. Whether you get vaccinated or not is entirely your decision and should be respected by everyone.” Despite this, the majority of Nena’s concerts scheduled for 2021 were postponed until a later date.
