The University of New Mexico’s intercollegiate football team is known as the Lobos. The Mountain West Conference is home to the Lobos. The cherry and silver are their official colours. University Stadium is the home of the Lobos. On December 9, 2008, Mike Locksley, the former offensive coordinator at Illinois, was hired head coach of the New Mexico Lobos.

He agreed to a six-year deal for $750,000 a year. [46] Locksley is UNM’s first and only African-American head football coach.A former administrative assistant at New Mexico filed a complaint with the Equal Opportunity Commission alleging age and sex discrimination against Locksley in late May 2009.

Locksley’s former administrative assistant, Sylvia Lopez, filed the complaint. Before being relocated out of Locksley’s office, Lopez alleged that he was exposed to age and sexual discrimination. The claims were later dropped. Locksley was punished in late September 2009 after a confrontation with an assistant coach.

He was then placed on paid leave for ten days. On October 24, 2009, he was not on the sidelines for the game against UNLV. In his first and second seasons, Locksley guided his Lobos to a 1–11 record. Despite fan calls for him to be fired, he returned for a third season. The substantial buyout was a major factor in UNM’s decision not to terminate him at first. UNM athletic director Paul Krebs, who decided to keep Locksley, expected the team to progress in 2011.

Following a 0–4 start that included a loss at home to FCS Sam Houston State and the arrest of a teenager for a DWI while driving a car belonging to Locksley’s 19-year-old son Meiko, a member of the Lobo Football team, Locksley was dismissed of his duties on September 25, 2011.

After an internal UNM investigation, it was discovered that the minor was not a recruit as previously stated, but rather a boyhood buddy of Meiko Locksley from his days in Champaign, Illinois, when his father was the Illini’s Offensive Coordinator from 2005 to 2008. Former Notre Dame head coach Bob Davie took over as the Lobos’ 30th head coach after Locksley was sacked.

Davie had been out of coaching for a decade and working as a college football pundit for ESPN when he was hired by the Lobos. He has substantial experience as an assistant coach in addition to his time as the head coach at Notre Dame. On December 25, 1986, Mike Sheppard was hired away from Long Beach State to take over as head coach of the Lobos football programme.

Sheppard, the Lobos slid to new lows, failing to finish better than 3–9 in a single season and achieving an all-time low in fan support and ticket sales. Under Sheppard, the Lobos went 9–50. [35] After the 1991 season, Sheppard was sacked.Dennis Franchione was hired away from Texas State and introduced as the Lobos’ new head coach on December 5, 1991, with the challenge of rebuilding the team after five years of failure.

He guided New Mexico to a 33–36 record in six seasons, including a 9–4 record in 1997 that earned the Lobos the WAC Mountain Division title and an invitation to the Bowl, which they lost. It was the Lobos’ first bowl berth since 1961.  After the 1997 season, Franchione moved to TCU from New Mexico.

Future NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher was on his roster for the 1996 and 1997 seasons, and he would set multiple defensive records during his time at UNM. A few years later, his #44 was retired at a UNM home football game at a ceremony. On December 20, 1997, Rocky Long, a UNM alum and former defensive coordinator at UCLA, was hired head football coach of the Lobos.

Through the 2008 season, he has a 65–69 overall win-loss record, including a 43–31 mark since 2001, the finest five-year span for Lobo football in over forty years.  He passed Roy Johnson as the most successful head coach in New Mexico football history during the 2005 season. For the first time in school history, he guided the Lobos to three consecutive postseason bowl games (2003–05), and the Lobos have been bowl-eligible for seven consecutive seasons, another school record.

The Lobos’ winning streak was extended into the 2007 season when they accepted a trip to the New Mexico Bowl. In the 2007 New Mexico Bowl, he led the Lobos to their first bowl victory, defeating the Nevada Wolf Pack 23–0. Long resigned on November 17, 2008, two days after the Lobos’ regular season finished, after 11 seasons with a losing record as a coach at UNM.

Long claimed he was not the ideal person to take the programme to new heights. He went on to say that he had no intention of retiring and that he wanted to continue coaching as a coordinator. The Lobos went 4–9 in Davie’s first season as head coach in 2012. The Lobos athletics department extended Davie’s contract after the season. UNM went 3–9 in Davie’s second season as head coach.

After another disappointing season in 2014, the 2015 Lobos finished with a 7–6 record and a berth in the New Mexico Bowl, UNM’s first bowl trip since 2007. The Lobos were defeated by Arizona 45–37.  Davie’s contract was extended for a second time after the season.  After 8 seasons with a 35–64 record, Davie and New Mexico parted ways on November 25, 2019. Danny Gonzales, a former Lobos player and Arizona State defensive coordinator, was named the 31st head coach of the Lobos on December 17, 2019.

New Mexico’s largest adversary is the New Mexico State Aggies, who they play every year. The Rio Grande Rivalry is the name given to the series. The rivalry between New Mexico’s only two NCAA Division I colleges stretches back to a football game in Albuquerque on January 1, 1894, 18 years before the state became a state. While it is undeniable that New Mexico won the first game, the score appears to be disputed by school records.

According to New Mexico media guides, the final score was 25–5, however the score was 18–6 according to New Mexico State media guides. UNM and New Mexico A&M (as NMSU was known prior to 1960) had previously played six times on the gridiron by the time New Mexico joined the union in 1912.

The two colleges competed for the Maloof Trophy beginning in 1993, however the competition was short-lived; the trophy was retired in 2000. Until 1937, the series was close, with the Aggies leading the Lobos 15–12–4. With the exception of 1959–1968, when the Aggies won 7 of 10 encounters, the Lobos have controlled the series 54–16–1.

The Lobos have a 72–33–5 all-time record, although the rivalry is still fierce. On September 21, 2019, the Lobos defeated the Aggies 55–52 in Albuquerque. The Aggies won 20–17 in Albuquerque on September 26, 2009, marking the 100th meeting between the clubs. The winner of the Arizona-New Mexico rivalry game, which was held annually from 1938 until 1990, received a gun in the Battle for the Kit Carson Rifle.

The weapon is a Springfield Model 1866 rifle that is said to have previously belonged to Kit Carson, a legendary frontier scout. Each game’s score is engraved on the rifle’s stock. The rifle was retired prior to the 1997 Bowl owing to concerns about its history of brutality against Native Americans, and it has not been used in any subsequent games between the two institutions.  After the 1990 season, the two teams stopped playing annually and now only meet every few years.
