Nina Hagen was born on March 11, 1955, in the former East Berlin, East Germany. Hans Hagen, a screenwriter, and Eva-Maria Hagen, an actress, and singer, are her parents. Her paternal grandpa died at the detention camp Sachsenhausen. Her parents split when she was two years old, and she only saw her father on rare occasions as she grew up. She began studying ballet at the age of four and was regarded as an opera prodigy by the age of nine.
Hagen’s mother married Wolf Biermann, an anti-establishment singer-songwriter when she was 11 years old. Biermann’s political ideas affected Hagen later in life. At the age of sixteen, Hagen dropped out of school and moved to Poland, where she began her career. Hagen attended The Central Studio for Light Music in East Berlin’s crash-course performing programme from 1972 to 1973. She joined the band Automobil after graduation.
She rose to fame in East Germany as a member of the band Automobil, becoming one of the country’s most well-known teenage performers. “Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen,” a sly poke ridiculing the sterile, colourless, Communist state, was her most recognised song from the early part of her career, released in 1974. In Karel Gott’s Czech TV show in Slan, Hagen sang comedic songs like “Hatschi-Waldera” and “Was denn.” In 1976, he released “Wir tanzen Tango.” Her musical career in the DDR was cut short in 1976, when she and her mother fled the country when her stepfather was expelled.
Hagen started her acting career alongside her mother, Eva-Maria Hagen, in a number of German films. She joined the band Automobil at the same time and released the single “Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen” at the same time. Hagen moved to Hamburg with her dad Wolf Biermann when his East German citizenship was revoked in 1976.
She was given a record deal by CBS Records shortly after and founded the Nina Hagen Band. In 1978, they published their self-titled debut album to critical acclaim and economic success, selling over 250,000 copies. Before disbanding in 1979, the band issued one more album, Unbehagen.
Hagen got a new contract with CBS in 1982 and released her first solo album, NunSexMonkRock, which went on to chart in the United States. Before her contract with CBS ended and was not extended, she released two more albums: Fearless (1983) and Nina Hagen in Ekstasy (1985).
Mercury Records offered her a record contract in 1989. Nina Hagen (1989), Street (1991), and Revolution Ballroom (1992) were her three albums for the label (1993). None of the albums, however, were a commercial success. With the release of her CD Return of the Mother, Hagen made a musical comeback (2000).
Hagen is also a voice-over actor in addition to her musical profession. Ich bin ein Berliner (1988). She is also known for her advocacy on behalf of human and animal rights.
