The Northern Illinois Huskies football team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of collegiate football and represents Northern Illinois University (NIU). Huskie Stadium on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb, Illinois, is where NIU football plays their home games.
The Huskies are a member of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference (MAC), and have won six conference championships since 1983, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2021. Since 2004, they’ve appeared in a total of twelve post-season bowl games, including the 2013 Orange Bowl. The Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which had shrunk to only five members (NIU, SIU, EIU, WIU, and ISU) by 1950, changed its name to the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and accepted its first out-of-state members.
NIU did not have a good first few years in the newly designated conference, with the exception of a perfect season (9–0–0) in 1951, which earned the team its fifth conference championship. Howard Fletcher, on the other hand, had other ideas when he took over from Robert Kahler in 1956 after a disastrous 0–8–1 season. The Huskies’ rise was gradual at first, but in the late 1950s, things began to pick up.
The team’s third bowl appearance, a loss in 1962, was only the start of good things to come, as the Huskies went undefeated for the sixth consecutive season, earning them the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, an AP College Division National Championship selection, and a ticket to the prestigious Mineral Water Bowl, which they eventually won over Missouri State.
By combining the 1964 and 1965 conference titles, the squad completed a three-peat championship. NIU was a member of the Mid-American Athletic Conference from 1973 to 1976 after becoming independent from 1966 to 1972. In 1983, the Huskies won their first Division I-A Bowl Game, the California Bowl, against Cal State-Fullerton. Following leaving the MAC after the 1985 season, the team first became independent from 1986 to 1992, then joined the Big West Conference from 1993 to 1995, then became independent again in 1996, before returning to the MAC in 1997.
Thomas Hammock was named the new head football coach at Northern Illinois University on January 18, 2019. From 1999 to 2002, Hammock was a running back for the Huskies, and from 2014 to 2018, he was the Baltimore Ravens’ running backs coach. Coaching at NIU “has always been [his] dream,” Hammock said during his first press conference as the team’s head coach.
NIU was an 18-point underdog against Georgia Tech when the season began, but the Yellow Jackets were upset 22-21. It was their 12th win over a Power 5 programme since 2000, and their eighth since 2009. With a 41-23 win over Kent State, the Huskies won their 5th MAC championship since 2011. With the exception of Marshall University joining in 1954 and Western Reserve University leaving in 1955, the membership remained stable for the next two decades.
Because to NCAA violations, Marshall was kicked from of the conference in 1969.The first substantial expansion since the 1950s occurred in the mid-1970s, when Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University were added in 1972, followed by Ball State University and Northern Illinois University in 1973. The 1985–86 season was NIU’s last. In 1992, Akron University became a part of the conference. With the re-admission of Marshall and NIU in 1997 and the arrival of the Bulls from the University at Buffalo in 1998, the conference grew to become the largest in Division I-A.
The University of Central Florida, which had previously been a non-football all-sports member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, only joined for football in 2002, making it the conference’s first football-only member. After the 2004–05 academic year, both Marshall and Central Florida departed and joined Conference USA in all sports. The Temple Owls of Philadelphia signed a six-year contract with the MAC as a football-only institution in May 2005, and they started playing in the East Division in 2007.
When Louisville was a member of the Metro Conference and Conference USA, the Cardinals were a MAC affiliate for field hockey for a number of years, earning two MAC tournament championships in 2003 and 2004.Men’s swimming and diving is represented in the MAC by the Missouri State Bears, Evansville Purple Aces, and Southern Illinois Salukis. The West Virginia Mountaineers became a men’s soccer affiliate in 2012, joining the Florida Atlantic Owls and the Hartwick College Hawks.
When Conference USA was formed in 2013, Florida Atlantic left. In 2015, the MAC declined to renew Hartwick’s contract. When the MAC absorbed the defunct Eastern Wrestling League in 2019, nine schools became wrestling affiliates. In field hockey, Appalachian State University and Longwood University are associate members; Missouri State was a member from 2005 until the 2016 season, when the team dropped field hockey.
In men’s tennis, Binghamton University is a partner. In June 2017, SIU Edwardsville (SIUE) was invited to join the men’s soccer and wrestling affiliate programmes for the 2018 season. When Buffalo abruptly discontinued four sports, including men’s soccer, SIUE jumped in. The University of Massachusetts Minutemen entered the MAC as a football-only member in July 2012, however owing to contractual concerns, the team was forced to leave at the end of the 2015 season.
In July 2012, Temple football ended its MAC membership and joined the Big East. Temple became a full member of the American Athletic Conference after the Big East split into football-sponsoring and non-football leagues in July 2013, ending its membership in the Atlantic 10. Until July 2013, the Chicago State Cougars were an affiliate for men’s tennis, which was sponsored by the Western Athletic Conference.
In November of this year, the conference announced that women’s lacrosse would be added to its sport sponsorship. In the 2021 season, MAC members Akron, Central Michigan, and Kent State were joined by associate members Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris, and Youngstown State to form a six-team conference. When women’s lacrosse is added for the 2022 season, Eastern Michigan will raise the league’s memb
