NSYNC was an American boy band founded in Orlando, Florida, by Chris Kirkpatrick in 1995 and released in Germany by BMG Ariola Munich. Kirkpatrick, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass were the members of the boy band NSYNC. In 1997, their self-titled first album was released to critical acclaim in Europe, and the single “I Want You Back” was released in the United States.

After a series of high-profile legal battles with their former manager Lou Pearlman and their former record label Bertelsmann Music Group, the group’s second album, No Strings Attached (2000), sold over one  million copies in one day and 2.4 million in one week, setting a new record for over fifteen years. The Recording Industry Association of America gave NSYNC’s first two studio albums Diamond certification (RIAA).

In its first week in America, Celebrity (2001) sold 1.8 million copies. “Bye Bye Bye,” “This I Promise You,” “Girlfriend,” “Pop,” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” all charted in the top ten in multiple countries, with the latter reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. NSYNC sang or recorded with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Phil Collins, Celine Dion, Aerosmith, Nelly, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Mary J. Blige, Alabama, and Gloria Estefan, among others, and performed at the World Series, Super Bowl, and Olympic Games.

Eight Grammy Award nominations were given to the ensemble. Before putting on an indefinite break, NSYNC last released new songs in 2002. The five members have reunited on a few occasions, including at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and when they were honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band has completed five nationwide concerts and has sold more than 70 million CDs, making them one of the most successful boy bands in history. Rolling Stone named them one of the “Top 25 Teen Idol Breakout Moments of All Time.”

Throughout his solo career, Justin Timberlake won ten Grammy Awards. The group continued to perform together at award ceremonies and events, and reformed for a broadcast Bee Gees medley at the 2003 Grammy Awards.  In the fall of 2003, they were supposed to start working on a new album. But it was never realised.  At the 2004 NSYNC Challenge for Children, they performed “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

According to Bass’ 2007 memoir Out of Sync, which was written after he received the Human Rights Campaign Award for his work in the gay community following his coming out, a meeting was held in the summer of 2004 to discuss the band’s future, at which Timberlake announced his decision to leave the band. The members reformed for the final NSYNC Challenge for the Children in 2005, but did not perform.

put out a greatest hits album in the fall of 2005. “I’ll Never Stop,” one of the songs on the album, had never been released in the United States before. Bass announced the disbandment of the band in 2007.  The Collection, a collection of singles issued only in the UK, was published in January 2010 by the band. NSYNC reunited for a special performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013. During Timberlake’s 15-minute set prior to accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, they performed a medley of “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.” Non-vocal pieces from “Gone” played in the background during their introduction. Bass said after the show that the band has no plans for a reunion tour or new music at the moment.

The Essential *NSYNC was published on July 29, 2014, and is a collection of *NSYNC’s hits and unreleased songs. “There’s a lot of these songs I don’t think I’ve ever heard,” Bass said on his Dirty Pop radio show. “I remember recording them, but I’ve never heard them before, so I’m just curious in hearing them.” Chasez announced the album’s release on Twitter with the following message: “Last night, I had the weirdest dream that some old pals and I had a top ten iTunes song. Isn’t that crazy?” According to Kirkpatrick, the CD is “amazing.”

“It’s fantastic to be able to share some previously unreleased tracks. I’m pleased to see some new songs for our long-time admirers.” Also remarked by Fatone: “This record comes out, and it’s at the top of Amazon and iTunes, which I had no knowledge about… we owe it to our followers. I appreciate it.” Dead 7, a western zombie film written by Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys, starring Fatone and Kirkpatrick. On April 1, 2016, Syfy broadcasted the film’s debut.

NSYNC reunited on April 30, 2018 to accept a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.Chasez, Fatone, Bass, and Kirkpatrick reunited on April 14, 2019, for a Coachella performance with Ariana Grande.”Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” “It Makes Me Ill,” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart” were among the songs they sang. Due to the conclusion of his The Man of the Woods Tour the night before, Timberlake was unable to attend the reunion. Bass, Fatone, and Kirkpatrick reunited on April 19, 2021 for “The 3/5ths of NSYNC,” a Progressive Insurance advertisement.

Artistry ‘N Sync’s (1997) debut studio album included four-on-the-floor Europop beats, with midtempo songs “I Want You Back” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart” that recalled Ace of Base’s production. With songs written by 80s adult contemporary singer Richard Marx and prolific composer Diane Warren, No Strings Attached (2000) was praised as “an incremental step away” from teen pop’s “softer side.”

It was mostly a pop record with influences ranging from new jack swing revivalism to uptempo R&B and hip-hop. The group broke away from their debut’s “lovesick” formula with the kiss-off message and self-assurance of the lead single “Bye Bye Bye.” Celebrity (2001) was mostly a pop/R&B album with electronica influences. The members’ likenesses were licenced on a wide range of products, including board games, microphones, lip balm, marionettes, novels, key chains, bedding, apparel, video games, and a number of other items.

In 2002, all five members of NSYNC were there as the group was immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds in New York. The group also had a partnership with McDonald’s that includes advertisements with the group and Britney Spears, as well as a CD and a film with behind-the-scenes footage from the making of NSYNC’s music video.  Members of the vocal group also had a partnership with Chili’s Grill & Bar, in which they appeared in ads for the restaurant and Chili’s helped fund the group’s tour.

*NSYNC: Get To The Show, a video game based on the band, was released in 2001 by Infogrames for the Game Boy Color.  On Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, a free, limited-run shop based on NSYNC called “Dirty Pop-Up” opened in April 2018. NPR’s Maria Sherman wrote a retrospective article for No Strings Attached’s 20th anniversary, describing the album as “the sound of a new millennium” and a “industry peak” commercially, as well as “one of the last artists to benefit so greatly from the industry bubble before its spectacular burst,” referring to the post-9/11 era.

“A combination of Swedish pop songcraft with R&B and hip-flow hop’s and bounce; a drive to explore mature subjects and genres; an understanding that dance and visual presentation can turn performers into icons,” Sherman said of their sophomore album. According to Billboard, their sophomore album’s production and writing “represented a sonic shift for all of pop music at the turn of the millennium,” noting that “before No Strings Attached, none of the major teen pop albums of the era had featured guest rappers or name producers from the R&B world, and virtually every one that followed did.”

NSYNC was not the first band to design an album “around the notion of taking control of their career,” according to writer Al Shipley, but with the No Strings Attached cover art and the “Bye Bye Bye” music video, the group pushed this topic a step further. The album’s pop, hip hop, and R&B features, according to Shipley, helped NSYNC “jump to the top of the boy band heap.”

According to a Stereogum article, the group “were firmly established into the TRL milieu,” which became “ground zero” for “America’s adolescent culture war” since they had the most number-one videos for a group and the second-most overall.”To be an adolescent at the beginning of the 2000 was to be flooded with boy bands and pop princesses, and *NSYNC were among the most prominent of them all,” the website’s editor observed.

Other contemporary boy bands “failed to develop a solo star,” according to Consequence, as NSYNC boosted Timberlake’s solo prominence.  Kelsea Ballerini, Selena Gomez, Meghan Trainor, and Why Don’t We are among the artists who have recognised the band as an inspiration. Hayley Williams claimed that listening to the group when she was a teenager taught her how to harmonise.
