The Barack Obama Foundation is a non-profit organisation situated in Chicago that was created in 2014. It is in charge of the Barack Obama Presidential Center’s construction, as well as the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a programme started by Barack Obama while he was President, and a scholarship programme managed by the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. On October 31, 2017, the Foundation conducted its first summit in Chicago. According to Barack Obama, his foundation will be at the centre of many of his post-presidential initiatives, which he believes will be more important than his tenure in the White House. According to their annual report submitted in June 2019, donations and in-kind gifts totaled $164.8 million in 2018, down $67.8 million from the $232.6 million raised in 2017. Adewale Adeyemo, a Nigerian economist and former Deputy National Security Adviser for International Economic Affairs, became the foundation’s first President in August 2019. Adeyemo was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Treasury by President-elect Joe Biden in 2020, and he was succeeded by Valerie Jarrett.
As of March 2018, the Foundation’s main mission is to supervise the construction of former President Barack Obama’s proposed presidential library. The Center’s development and placement in the Jackson Park area of Chicago’s South Side were announced in May 2015 by the Foundation and Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel. Some local authorities criticised the planning process, claiming that the value to the surrounding region was questionable and that the community was not fully consulted. The Obama Foundation has opposed to the requirement of a community benefits agreement in order to make the Center official, which was voted on by Chicago citizens on February 26, 2019. In 2019, revised plans were revealed, with some revisions made in response to input. There are four buildings in the complex, including a museum, public space, a public library branch, and an athletic facility. Tod Williams Billie Tsien, an architectural firm, designed it.
The facility is scheduled to begin building in 2021 as of December 2020. President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Challenge, which he launched through the White House in 2014, prompted the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK Alliance). Its goal is to help boys and young men of colour overcome problems and opportunities by offering mentorship, education, job training, and other activities. The Obama Foundation took over the MBK Alliance in 2017. The Foundation announced in February 2018 that it has started a scholarship programme at the University of Chicago. The Presidential Center awards scholarships to 25 American and foreign master’s students at the Harris School of Public Policy in an effort to build leadership. It pays for the students’ tuition and living expenses while they work and study with the foundation. It has started funding Obama Foundation Scholars fellowships at Obama’s alma mater, Columbia University. The non-degree-granting programme paid the fees and offered a stipend for 12 overseas students in its debut year, 2018.
