Octavia Lenora Spencer has six siblings, including sisters Rosa and Areka, and was born in Montgomery, Alabama. Dellsena Spencer (1945–1988), her son, served as a cleaner. When she was thirteen, her father died. Spencer attended Jefferson Davis High School and graduated in 1988.
