Olivia Kate Cooke was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester, on December 27, 1993. Lindsy Wild, a sales agent, and John Cooke, a former police officer, are her parents. Eleanor, her younger sister, is her only sibling. When she was a teenager, her parents divorced, and she and her younger sister moved in with their mum. She began acting at the Oldham Theatre Workshop, an after-school theatre programme in her hometown, when she was eight years old. She went to Royton and Crompton Academy and Oldham Sixth Form College to study acting before leaving before her A-levels to star in the drama series Blackout.
She played Maria in a college version of West Side Story before landing her first and only leading role in Prom: The Musical, a recreation of Cinderella, for the Oldham Theatre Workshop. She got her first local agent when she was 14, who got her commercial roles. She starred as a student having a piggyback ride from Harry Styles in One Direction’s “Autumn Term” tour video in 2012. Despite her agent’s advice that she could not go to drama school because she was still acting, she applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and made it to the final round of auditions, but was not admitted.
Cooke appeared in Bulgari ads in 2014 to promote the Save the Children movement. She relocated to London in January 2020 after four years in New York City.
Following her performance at the Oldham Theatre Workshop, Cooke was cast in television parts by Beverley Keogh, a casting director who worked next door to her agency. Cooke appeared in three BBC mini-series in 2012, including Blackout, in which she played the daughter of Christopher Eccleston’s character, and The Secret of Crickley Hall, in which she played a teenage teacher at a tyrannical orphanage in the 1940s. Cooke said that she preferred television to theatre because she was embarrassed by the dramatic movements that are often required in stage acting. Despite her inexperience, Cooke stood out among European actresses during the arduous casting process for The Quiet Ones, which premiered in April 2014, two years after shooting.
Following the release of The Quiet Ones in 2012, Cooke signed with a Los Angeles-based agent. She submitted an audition tape for the part of Emma Decody after reading the character details for A&E’s contemporary Psycho prequel Bates Motel. Cooke was cast in her first American role, Emma, three weeks later. She was initially surprised when the producers changed Emma’s accent to Mancunian, thinking it was a fail-safe measure. Cooke has since been mistaken for an American, thanks to the help of fellow English actor Freddie Highmore, who has prior experience with an American accent. Cooke has uploaded a few short videos to Emma’s made-up account.
In the indie drama film Katie Says Goodbye, Cooke starred alongside Jim Belushi, Mireille Enos, Christopher Abbott, and Mary Steenburgen as the titular character. The storey follows Katie, a 17-year-old waitress who resorts to prostitution in order to escape hardship and launch a new life in San Francisco. She then appeared alongside Bill Nighy and Douglas Booth in the film version of Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem, a gothic murder mystery. Both films had their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. Cooke then appeared opposite Anya Taylor-Joy and Anton Yelchin in the drama Thoroughbreds, which debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
In Steven Spielberg’s science fiction adventure Ready Player One, Cooke played Art3mis, and the film was released in March 2018. Later that year, she co-starred in Dan Fogelman’s love drama Life Itself with Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, and Samuel L. Jackson, and she played Becky Sharp in the ITV production of Vanity Fair.
Cooke and Riz Ahmed co-starred in the drama film Sound of Metal. On September 6, 2019, the film had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. She has starred in the Prime Video romantic comedy anthology series Modern Love as Karla, a pregnant homeless woman who gives her baby up for adoption.
