Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee are members of Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX), an American a cappella group based in Arlington, Texas. They compose cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, as well as original material, and are known for their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffs, percussion, and beatboxing.
Pentatonix was created in 2011 and went on to win the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, earning $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music in the process. After being dropped by Sony’s Epic Records after The Sing-Off, the group started their own YouTube channel and distributed its music through Madison Gate Records, a Sony Pictures label.
Their YouTube channel has over 19 million subscribers and has received over 5 billion views. As of November 20, 2021, the group’s video homage to Daft Punk had gotten over 355 million views. Pentatonix’s first EP, PTX, Volume 1, was published in 2012, followed by PTXmas the following year, with their third album, PTX, Vol. II, hitting at number one on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and number ten on the Billboard 200 in 2013.
Pentatonix signed with RCA Records, Sony Music Entertainment’s “flagship” label, in May 2014, and released their fourth EP, PTX, Vol. III, as well as two full-length studio albums: PTX, Vols. 1 & 2, a compilation album released in Japan, Korea, and Australia, and That’s Christmas to Me, a holiday release certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), platinum on December 24, 2014, and double platinum on December 24, The following year, Pentatonix released their self-titled album, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 list for the first time in their career, and was followed by a third Christmas album, A Pentatonix Christmas, in 2016, and a new EP, PTX, Vol. IV – Classics, the following year.
In 2010, Hoying and Maldonado graduated from Martin High School, while Grassi graduated in 2011. Another member of the group, Ben Bram (also their arranger, producer, and sound engineer), told him about The Sing-Off and pushed him to audition for the show.He got Maldonado and Grassi to join him, but Bram proposed adding a bassist and a beatboxer to the mix as well. Hoying met Avi Kaplan (born April 17, 1989), a well-known vocal bass in the a cappella world, through a mutual friend.
It was their first album without Kaplan and with Sallee.t was preceded by three singles: a version of “Havana,” a mix of Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” and Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” titled “New Rules x Are You That Somebody?” published on March 9 with a music video, and a cover of Charlie Puth’s “Attention” released on March 23 with a music video.
