Philip Hansen Anselmo(born June 30, 1968) is an American heavy metal musician best known as the main singer for Pantera, Down, and Superjoint, amongst other musical ventures. He is the proprietor of Housecore Records. Anselmo is recognised as one of the finest frontmen in metal history, noted for being highly passionate and sporting a macho attitude that became indicative of the main subject of Pantera.

Earlier in his tenure with the band, Anselmo drew tremendous influence from heavy metal singers such as Rob Halford, singing in full head voice. However, he eventually became famous for adding a more guttural style to the singing.

Anselmo was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is of Danish, Italian and French origin. He attended numerous schools around Louisiana and Texas, the latest of which being Grace King High School in the New Orleans neighbourhood of  Metairie. Anselmo’s father, Phil, owned and managed a restaurant in Metairie named Anselmo’s, which shuttered during Hurricane Katrina.

Anselmo has mentioned in many interviews that he was the class clown as a youngster. At age 15, Anselmo accidently set a fire in his parents’ home while trying to tease his sister. The event resulted in smoke damage to much of the furnishings and part of the home necessitating restoration.

Anselmo worked on a shrimp boat with his stepfather in his adolescent years, and claimed to have observed a guy get poisoned by a scorpionfish. In 1981, Anselmo co-formed his first band named Samhain (not to be confused with Glenn Danzig’s band of the same name) along with pals from around the region, performing vocal and guitar responsibilities.

In 1985, he joined the band Rapid Phaze who would eventually rebrand themselves to Razor White, after one of the songs Anselmo penned.  While they did have some original material, they mostly performed cover songs of prominent rock and metal bands. Around this time, Anselmo stopped high school to focus on his musical career.  After approximately a year-plus with the band, he got disillusioned with Razor White’s direction and started to explore alternative possibilities.

Pantera released four albums on Metal Magic Records, but did not receive much notice, since the band was not signed with a big label record at the time. Seeking a new leader to continue along a harder path, the band’s previous singer Terry Glaze, who was predominantly a glam metal vocalist, quit the band. In 1987, following many meetings, the 19-year old Anselmo was formally added to the Pantera lineup.

The band was so pleased by Anselmo, that they re-recorded portions of Glaze’s vocals for their newest CD. [citation needed] Anselmo travelled to Texas to record Pantera’s fourth album, Power Metal, which was released in 1988. Following the release of Power Metal, the band shed its glam image and embraced a more casual approach.

In

1990, Pantera released their fifth album, Cowboys from Hell, which paved the route towards the band’s popularity and developed a new kind of metal known as groove metal. As a tour unfolded to promote the band’s current album, there was captured sections of this tour on their first home video, Cowboys from Hell: The Videos, published in 1991.

In 1992, Pantera released their sixth studio album, Vulgar Display of Power, which boasted an even harder sound than its predecessor. In 1994, they released Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No. 1 in the United States.

In late June, Anselmo was charged with assault after a confrontation with a security officer when supporters were prohibited from coming on stage. He was freed on $5,000 bond the following day. The trial was postponed three times. In May 1995, he apologised in court, pled guilty to attempted assault, and was compelled to do 100 hours of community service.

Pantera’s eighth studio album, The Great Southern Trendkill, was released in 1996. Due to developing tensions between Anselmo and the rest of the band, Anselmo recorded the vocal recordings for this album in New Orleans while the other members recorded in Texas. Pantera’s first and only official live album, Official Live: 101 Proof, was released in 1997. “I Can’t Hide” and “Where You Come From” were two new songs on this album.

Reinventing the Steel, Pantera’s eighth and last studio album, was released in 2000. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 after touring to support the album. Pantera’s first compilation album, The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits!, was published in 2003.

The CD contains songs from Anselmo’s five original albums as well as three cover tunes. A bonus DVD collecting all of the band’s music videos was also produced. Pantera dissolved later that year due to communication issues and claims that Anselmo had abandoned the band.

Phil Anselmo is a vocalist from the United States who specialises in metal. He is most known as the lead vocalist of the bands Pantera, Down, and Superjoint Ritual. Furthermore, he is the owner and creator of Housecore Records. Phil Anselmo was born on June 30, 1968, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His ancestors come from Denmark, Italy, and France. Anselmo’s, a Metairie restaurant that collapsed due to financial troubles, was owned by his father.

When Anselmo was 14 years old, he set fire to his parents’ home while playing a joke on his sister. The majority of the furniture was smoke-damaged, and the disaster necessitated the renovation of a part of the home. When Anselmo was a kid, he joined the band Samhain. From the early to mid-1980s, Anselmo was a member of the band Razor White.

In 1987, Pantera added Anselmo to their lineup. The band released albums such as Power Metal, Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill, Official Live: 101 Proof (first live album), Reinventing The Steel, The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits, and The Great Southern Trendkill ( first compilation album).

Anselmo left the band in 2004 due to a lack of contact with the other members. The heavy metal band from New Orleans, Louisiana was formed in 1991. The band is made up of current and former members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod.

The band has released three studio albums, two EPs, and one live CD. The band was formed in the early 1990s by Anselmo, Joe Fazzio, and Jimmy Bower, and subsequently joined by Hank Williams and Kevin Bond. Use Once and Destroy was out in 2002, followed by A Lethal Dose of American Hatred in 2003 and Caught Up in the Gears of Application in 2016.

Anselmo produced Cowbar’s self-titled album in 1983. He also recorded their album Broken Glass in 1996. In the same year, he contributed backup vocals to Anal Cunt’s 40 More Reasons to Hate Us album. In 1998, Anselmo sang a duet (“By the River”) on Vision of Disoeder’s Imprint album and supplied backup vocals on Anthrax’s Volume 8: The Threat is Real’s track 8 (“Killing Box”).

On March 6, 2006, Anselmo performed at VH1’s Decades Rock Live event in tribute of the band Heart. In 2001, he supplied vocals to Biohazard’s Uncivilization album, and in 2008, he contributed vocals to Jarboe’s Mahakali album. In 2015, he appeared in the song “Prophets of Loss” as a cameo.

In 2016, he sang Ace of Spades as the lead singer among other well-known performers. According to his comments, a back ailment in the mid-1990s caused him tremendous suffering. He drank often, misused pills and muscle relaxants, and finally developed a heroin addiction to deal with the suffering.

Anselmo stopped using heavy drugs in 2005 and has maintained his sobriety ever since. Anselmo gets caught in a racist incident after chanting “White power.” During the “Dimebash” Dimebag Darrell tribute show on January 22, 2016, Anselmo offered a Nazi salute and screamed “White Power” to the audience.

The event was captured on camera by a member of the crowd, and the footage was subsequently released on YouTube. Later, Anselmo clarified that when he mentioned he was drinking “White wine,” he was kidding. He also expressed remorse via the YouTube video. Anselmo’s net worth is believed to be $6 million.

Following the disbandment, Anselmo focused his efforts on Superjoint Ritual, a long-running side project. After hearing about this, the Pantera Abbott brothers formed Damageplan with guitarist Pat Lachman on vocals and bassist Bob Zilla. Because of remarks in the heavy metal press, several fans blamed Anselmo for Pantera’s demise.  Anselmo had accused journalists of distorting the facts in order to print what they thought would sell the most.

Pantera bassist Rex Brown, generally regarded as the lone voice of reason in the situation, blamed both sides for the band’s demise. After Vinnie Paul blasted Superjoint Ritual, claiming Anselmo couldn’t keep his eyes open, Anselmo said, “I can’t even keep my eyes open.” “I just heard a huge and sad yellowbelly crybaby fuckin’ because his food ticket is with another fuckin’ band. To really grasp where I was coming from, you’d have to know those men.

They’re terrified of their own shadows. And, with that stated, I wish them the very best of luck. They’re still one of my favourites.”  Since Pantera’s disbandment, Anselmo has been at odds with Dimebag Darrell, culminating in the declaration “Dimebag deserves to be thrashed badly” in the December 2004 issue of the UK’s Metal Hammer magazine.

He first denied making the remark, but then revised his narrative on a VH1 Behind the Music special on Pantera, stating that the remark was made off the record and in jest. Vinnie Paul, on the other hand, informed the press that he listened to the audio files of the interview and that Anselmo was not misquoted.

Dimebag Darrell was fatally shot while playing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, in December 2004. Anselmo declined to attend Darrell’s funeral at the request of his family. Anselmo expressed contrition for his prior actions in a long and sad video released on Down’s official website, and has written and recorded songs for the Down album Over the Under dealing with Darrell’s death.

The song “Lifer” was dedicated to Darrell by the band. Anselmo expressed his desire to rekindle his connection with Vinnie Paul, however due to Paul’s sudden death on June 22, 2018, such an endeavour would be futile. In a July 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Anselmo came out against Pantera and his other bands’ use of the Confederate flag on merchandising, records, and other promotional material, arguing that it was a mistake.

According to Anselmo “I wouldn’t want anything to do with it now days because, honestly, I wouldn’t. You can see a Confederate flag out there that reads ‘Heritage, not hatred,’ because of how I feel and the set of individuals I’ve had to deal with my entire life. That appeals to me, but I’m not sure I believe it.” Pantera adopted the picture because they were enormous admirers of Lynyrd Skynyrd, according to Anselmo, but it was never about spreading hatred.
