The Philadelphia Eagles are an American football team headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Eagles are a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division of the National Football League (NFL). At Lincoln Financial Field, the team plays its home games.

When a syndicate led by Bert Bell obtained the rights to an NFL club in Philadelphia, the franchise was founded in 1933 as a substitute for the insolvent Frankford Yellow Jackets. The Eagles have made the playoffs 27 times since its inception, winning 14 division titles (11 in the NFC East), four pre-merger NFL Championship Games, three of which they won (1948, 1949, and 1960), and three Super Bowls, the most recent of which was Super Bowl LII at the end of the 2017 season.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame recently inducted Bell, Chuck Bednarik, Bob Brown, Brian Dawkins, Reggie White, Steve Van Buren, Tommy McDonald, Greasy Neale, Pete Pihos, Harold Carmichael, Sonny Jurgensen, and Norm Van Brocklin. With the New York Giants, the franchise has had a fierce rivalry. This was the NFC East’s and one of the NFL’s oldest rivalries. It is one of the strongest and most well-known rivalries in the American football community, according to NFL Network, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN.

They also have a savage rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys, which has grown in prominence since the 1960s, as well as a long-standing rivalry with the Washington Football Team. Their rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which dates back to 1933, is known as the Battle of Pennsylvania. Since the 1999 season, the team has been one of the most popular in the league, with every game sold out.

On May 6, 1994, former owner Norman Braman sold the Eagles to Jeffrey Lurie for $195 million. The club was valued at $2.65 billion by Forbes in 2017, making them the 10th most valuable NFL team. Municipal Stadium in South Philadelphia hosted the Eagles between 1936 and 1939. Bell refused to sign a lease for Shibe Park in 1940 because the city offered a 66 percent rent increase plus ten percent of the gate receipts for using the stadium (renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1954).

Shibe Park had added lighting the year before, so the Eagles would be able to play night games.  The Eagles began the 1941 season at Municipal Stadium before moving to Shibe Park for the rest of the season.  Management built stands in right field, parallel to 20th Street, to accommodate football at Shibe Park during the winter.

These

“east stands,” which stood 20 feet tall and had 22 rows of seats, were 20 feet wide and 20 feet long. Along the first base line and in left field, there were goalposts. The park’s capacity was increased to nearly 39,000 with the addition of the uncovered east bleachers, but the Eagles rarely drew more than 25,000 to 30,000 fans. The 1937 season ended with a 2–8–1 record, and the team would struggle for the next three years.

On January 21, 2021, the Eagles hired Nick Sirianni, the former offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles traded starting quarterback Carson Wentz to the Colts in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional second-round pick in 2022 during the offseason.  Wentz was reunited with Frank Reich, the Colts’ head coach, who served as Wentz’s offensive coordinator for his first two years in Philadelphia, including during the Eagles’ Super Bowl–winning season in 2017.

For moving Wentz, the Eagles took a $33.8 million dead-cap penalty, the most in NFL history. The Eagles picked DeVonta Smith, the Heisman Trophy winner, with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and then manipulated their way through the draught to obtain an extra first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Smith was a highly regarded prospect out of Alabama, and he became the Eagles’ first Heisman Trophy winner in more than fifty years. Smith was also reunited with Jalen Hurts, his first quarterback at Alabama, as a result of his selection.Hurts was chosen the Eagles’ starting quarterback for the 2021 NFL season following training camp, according to head coach Sirianni. Following a victory over the Washington Football Team, a loss by the Minnesota Vikings, and a win by the San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles won a playoff berth in week 17 after starting the season 2-5.

The Eagles had the best rushing offence since the 1985 Chicago Bears and the best in franchise history since the 1949 Eagles. The 2007 uniforms had a 75th-season logo patch on the left shoulder to commemorate the team’s 75th anniversary. Furthermore, in a 2007 game against the Detroit Lions, the club donned “throwback” uniforms.

The yellow and blue jerseys are modelled on those worn by the Philadelphia Eagles in their initial season, and were also used by the Frankford Yellow Jackets prior to their suspension in 1931. Detroit was defeated 56–21 by the Eagles. During the first half of the regular season, from September to mid-October, when the weather is warmer, the Eagles wear their white jerseys at home for preseason games and daytime games.

The Eagles do not need to wear white at home for night games in the first part of the regular season because the temperatures are cooler. There have been some outliers, such as the 2003 home opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2007 home opener against the Washington Redskins, which were both played at night. The Eagles began wearing their colours at home in late October or early November (although they had done so previously), whether it’s midnight green jerseys or a third jersey.

The Eagles wore white after October in a game against the Dallas Cowboys on November 4, 2007, to force the Cowboys to wear their blue road uniforms. The Eagles wore white at home for at least their home opener after moving to Lincoln Financial Field in 2003, but they’ve decided to wear their customary dark green jerseys in recent years, even in the hottest of autumn weather.

The Eagles wore clothes identical to those worn by the 1960 championship team in their season opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 12, 2010, to commemorate the team’s 50th anniversary. The Eagles donned their white jerseys against the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons in weeks 4 and 6 of the 2010 season, before switching back to their midnight green jerseys for the rest of their home games.

Nike took over as the NFL’s official clothing licensee from Reebok for the 2012 season, however the Eagles decided against using Nike’s “Elite 51” uniform technology. The only other alteration is the league-wide modification of the NFL shield on the uniform, with the Nike emblem replacing the Reebok logo (replacing the NFL Equipment logo). Aside from that, the uniforms haven’t changed much. During the regular season, the Eagles also reintroduced their black alternate jersey and began wearing white pants with their white jerseys.

Nike’s “Elite 51” style uniform was adopted by the Eagles for the 2014 season. Due to the difficulty of creating their desired shade of midnight green, they only debuted the midnight green jerseys and pants in the second half of that season. The team has recently explored bringing back the “Kelly Green” jerseys, which were last worn in the 2010 season opener vs. Green Bay, and are comparable to the uniforms worn in the 1960 NFL Championship season.

Until the 1996 season, when the team’s colours were altered to the current “Midnight Green,” kelly green, silver, and white had been the official team colours. According to NFL laws and regulations, teams must wait a certain amount of time before making substantial uniform changes or revisions, therefore any uniform changes would most certainly take a long time.

The club debuted black pants to compliment their black jerseys in Week 6 of 2014 against the New York Giants, creating a blackout uniform combination. The Eagles were 27–0 winners. It was the team’s first shutout in more than a decade. The Eagles wore a variation of the all-black outfit as part of the NFL Color Rush campaign in Week 16 of 2016 (again against the Giants), but with solid black socks rather than black with white sanitary socks as in the original look.

The black jerseys and white pants combo was last seen during a preseason road game against the New England Patriots, following which the black jerseys were only worn with black pants. The Eagles donned solely white pants with their primary white or midnight green jerseys for the first time since the 1996 rebrand.

The Eagles debuted an all-white look in a road game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 6 of the 2017 season, wearing white jerseys, white pants, and solid white socks. Because the NFL decided to allow teams to wear solid colour socks as an option look, the all-white design became a full-time road uniform set in 2019.Against the Denver Broncos in Week 10 of the 2021 season, the Eagles wore their white uniforms with the alternate black pants for the first time.
