Rascal Flatts is a country music band from the United States that formed in 1999. Gary LeVox (lead vocals), Jay DeMarcus (bass guitar, background vocals), and Joe Don Rooney (drums) made up the band (lead guitar, background vocals). DeMarcus is LeVox’s second cousin, the brother-in-law of country musician James Otto, and a former member of the East to West contemporary Christian music duo.
They worked for Disney Music Group’s defunct Lyric Street Records branch from 2000 to 2010. They recorded six studio albums for that label, all of which were certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rascal Flatts (2000), Melt (2002), Feels Like Today (2004), Me and My Gang (2006), Still Feels Good (2007), and Unstoppable (2007) are the albums released in that order (2009).
Following the closure of Lyric Street in 2010, they signed with Big Machine Records, releasing four studio albums and one Christmas album: Nothing Like This (2010), Changed (2012), Rewind (2014), The Greatest Gift of All (2016), and Back to Us, their final studio album (2017).
Rascal Flatts has released over forty singles, with sixteen of them reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay, and/or Canada Country charts. In 2005, their longest-running No. 1 single was a version of Marcus Hummon’s “Bless the Broken Road,” which spent five weeks on the chart. “What Hurts the Most” hit No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs and Adult Contemporary charts from 2006 to 2007, and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
After 21 years together, the band announced their disbandment on January 7, 2020, following a final tour; however, the goodbye tour was cancelled because to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rascal Flatts officially split in October 2021, due to the postponement of their final tour and Rooney’s arrest earlier that year for driving while intoxicated.
The Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar in Nashville, Tennessee, was the birthplace of Rascal Flatts. Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus are musician cousins. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992 as part of a Christian group called East to West, and his brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a country music performer.
DeMarcus contacted LeVox in 1997 and persuaded him to come to Nashville to sing harmonies on Michael English’s album Gospel, which he was producing. They collaborated on the album’s production and became English’s backing band. DeMarcus had also become the bandleader of Chely Wright’s band, when he met Joe Don Rooney, the band’s guitarist.
Mila Mason referred the band to record producers Mark Bright and Marty Williams, who played a three-song demo to Lyric Street Records A&R Doug Howard, who thought they were “simply wonderful.” The band walked into the Lyric Street offices the next day after hearing the demos, sat down with acoustic guitars, and played a few tunes.
Howard told HitQuarters in an interview: “I was swept away by the voices and harmonies. The lead singer has a distinctive and captivating voice.” Late in 1999, the band got signed to Lyric Street. In early 2017, Rascal Flatts released their next single, “Yours If You Want It,” to country radio.
The song was released as the lead single from their tenth studio album, Back to Us, on May 19 of that year. Despite the success of “Yours If You Want It” on the Country Airplay charts, the album’s title tune failed to chart in the top 40 after its release as a single. Rascal Flatts released a new track called “Back to Life” on September 28, 2018. In the summer of 2019, the band began its Summer Playlist tour.

On March 19, 2021, LeVox released a Christian single called “The Distance.” Rascal Flatts will not tour in 2021, according to LeVox, who stated this in an interview with Billboard.
In an interview with Taste of Country on April 27, 2021, DeMarcus claimed that the pandemic may have impacted the band’s plans for a farewell tour, and that they may continue together and perform 10-15 shows annually. On August 25, DeMarcus and Rooney accepted the Cliffie Stone Icon Award on behalf of the group at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Honors ceremony, although LeVox was neither present or announced.
LeVox announced the band’s official breakup in October, citing Rooney’s departure. LeVox also said that he hadn’t spoken to Rooney since his DUI arrest on September 10 and that the band had quietly split when their farewell concert was cancelled.
