Robert Swan Mueller III (born August 7, 1944) is an American lawyer and government figure who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as its sixth Director from 2001 to 2013. Mueller received a Bronze Star for gallantry and a Purple Heart as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War, after graduating from Princeton University and New York University. He went on to the University of Virginia School of Law after that. Mueller is a registered Republican in Washington, D.C., and presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have all nominated and reappointed him to Senate-confirmed posts.  Mueller is descended from German, English, and Scottish ancestors. Gustave A. Mueller, his paternal great-grandfather, was a distinguished doctor in Pittsburgh, whose father, August C. E. Müller, had moved to the United States in 1855 from the Kingdom of Prussia’s Province of Pomerania (a historical territory whose area included land now part of Poland and the north-eastern edge of Germany). He is a great-grandson of railroad executive William Truesdale on his mother’s side.

Mueller is descended from German, English, and Scottish ancestors. Gustave A. Mueller, his paternal great-grandfather, was a distinguished doctor in Pittsburgh, whose father, August C. E. He is a great-grandson of railroad executive William Truesdale on his mother’s side. Mueller was approved for officer training in the United States Marine Corps in 1968 after waiting a year for a knee injury to recover. He attended Parris Island, Officer Candidate School, Army Ranger School, and Army jump school. Ranger School, he later remarked, was the most beneficial of them because it “teaches you more than anything about how you behave with no sleep and no food.” In the summer of 1968, he was assigned to Second Platoon, H Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, where he served as a rifle platoon leader as a second lieutenant. He was wounded in the thigh by an enemy gunfire in April 1969, but he healed and continued to lead his platoon until June 1969. The Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” Purple Heart Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals with Combat “V,” Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four service stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Parachutist Medal are among his military decorations and awards for his service in and during the Vietnam War. Mueller became aide-de-camp to the 3rd Marine Division’s commanding general, then–Major General William K. Jones, after recovering in a field hospital in Da Nang, where he “significantly contributed to the rapport” Jones established with other commanders, according to one source.

Mueller had pondered joining the Marine Corps as a profession, but he subsequently revealed that he found the Corps’ non-combat life to be uninteresting. Mueller was temporarily stationed at Henderson Hall after returning from South Vietnam, before leaving active duty in August 1970 with the rank of captain. Mueller reflected on his experience in the Vietnam War, saying, “I consider myself extremely fortunate to have escaped Vietnam. There were a lot of those that didn’t. Perhaps it’s because I survived Vietnam that I’ve always felt obliged to give back.” Despite his numerous achievements, he told a journalist in 2009 that he was “more happy the Marine Corps thought me worthy of commanding other Marines.”
