Samuel L. Jackson, full name Samuel Leroy Jackson, was an American actor best known for his work in action films and collaborations with directors Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino.

Jackson was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by his grandparents. He became active in the Black Power movement while attending Atlanta’s historically Black Morehouse College. In 1969, he was expelled for locking some school board members in a building for two days in protest of the predominantly white board’s makeup. Following a two-year stint as a social worker in Los Angeles, Jackson returned to Morehouse to pursue acting after being inspired by a Negro Ensemble Company performance. After graduating in 1972, he became a member of the Black Image Theatre Company, which toured the country performing politically charged skits to mostly white audiences.

Jackson relocated to New York City in 1976 and started working in the theatre. Jackson met actor Morgan Freeman and aspiring film student Spike Lee while performing in Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning A Soldier’s Play in 1981. Lee cast Jackson in some of Jackson’s early films, including School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), and Jungle Fever (1991), for which Jackson won the first best supporting actor award ever given by the Cannes film festival judges for his riveting role as a hard-core heroin addict. The function inspired Jackson, who had recently completed rehab, to put an end to his own drug addiction for good. Jackson’s breakout role was in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction, in which he played a rambunctious Bible-verse-spouting serial killer.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for that role. Jurassic Park (1993), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), A Time to Kill (1996), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Tarantino’s Jackie Brown (1997), The Negotiator (1998), and Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace (1999) were among his other roles throughout the 1990s. In Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith (2003), he reprised his role (2005). He also provided the character’s voice in Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Jackson’s versatility was demonstrated in the twenty-first century, with roles as a military colonel in Rules of Engagement (2000), a police detective in John Singleton’s blaxploitation remake Shaft (2000), an angry motorist in Changing Lanes (2002), an FBI agent in Snakes on a Plane (2006), and an outspoken but devoted white slaver’s butler in Quentin Tarantino’s blood-soaked Django Unchained (2006). (2012). After allowing Marvel Comics to use his likeness for the character Nick Fury, Jackson signed a nine-film deal with the studio in 2009, which included Iron Man 2 (2010), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). (2019).

2015, Jackson received praise for his roles in Lee’s Chi-Raq, a satire on Chicago gang violence, and Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, in which he played a Black bounty hunter dealing with racism and extreme violence in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The following year, he starred in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a fantastical adventure based on a popular young adult series by Ransom Riggs, as a villain seeking immortality. Kong: Skull Island and The Hitman’s Bodyguard were two of Jackson’s films released in 2017.

Jackson returned to two roles from 2000 in 2019: in Glass, he played a comic book dealer/villain from M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural thriller Unbreakable, and in Shaft, he played John Shaft again. In the same year, he starred in The Last Full Measure, a film about a US soldier’s bravery in the Vietnam War and the cover-up that prevented him from receiving the Medal of Honor. The Banker, a drama set in the 1950s about two African American businessmen who use a white man as a front, was one of Jackson’s credits from 2020. The following year, he starred in Spiral, a sequel to the Saw horror franchise.

Jackson’s sonorous voice was also used to narrate a number of films, and he appeared on television as a spokesperson for a variety of products and services. In the animated films The Incredibles (2004) and Incredibles 2, he can be heard (2018).
