The San Francisco 49ers (sometimes known as the San Francisco Forty Niners) are a professional American football team headquartered in the Bay Area. The 49ers are a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) West division of the National Football League (NFL), and their home games are held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, 38 miles (61 kilometres) southeast of San Francisco.

The prospectors that landed in Northern California during the 1849 Gold Rush inspired the name of the squad. The franchise began as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946, and when the leagues merged in 1949, it became a member of the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers are the NFL’s 10th-oldest team and were the city’s first major league professional sports franchise.

The team began its career at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, then moved to Candlestick Park in 1971, and finally to Levi’s Stadium in 2014. Santa Clara has served as the 49ers’ home since 1988.Between 1981 and 1994, the 49ers captured five Super Bowl titles. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, Charles Haley, Fred Dean, and coaches Bill Walsh and George Seifert led four of them to the Super Bowl in the 1980s.

Between 1970 and 2021, they won 21 division titles, making them one of the most successful NFL teams ever. The 49ers are fourth all-time in postseason wins (33), having appeared in the league playoffs 28 times (27 in the NFL and one in the AAFC), and have also appeared in the most NFC Championship games (16), hosting ten of them, an NFC record. Most consecutive away games won (18), most points scored in a single postseason (131), most consecutive seasons leading the league in scoring (4), most consecutive games scored (420 games from 1979 to 2004), most field goals in a season (44), most games won in a season (18), and most touchdowns (8) and points scored (55) in a Super Bowl have all been set by the team.

The 49ers are the NFL’s sixth most valuable franchise, according to Forbes, with a market value of $3.05 billion as of September 2019. They were listed as the world’s 12th most valuable sports team in 2020, after the Los Angeles Rams but ahead of the Chicago Bears. The 49ers stated in 2018 that they had purchased a 15% minority ownership position in Leeds United F.C. in England, which was increased to 37% in 2021.

49ers have an 8–0 record to open the 2019 season. It was the first time they had opened the season 10–0 since 1990, when they went on to lose in the NFC Championship Game. In a game dubbed the Mud Bowl, the 49ers defeated the Washington Redskins 9–0 at FedExField in Week 7. Since Week 1 of the 2016 season, when the 49ers shut out the Los Angeles Rams, this was the first time they had shut out an opponent.

The 49ers defeated the Carolina Panthers 51–13 in Week 8, becoming the team’s 12th regular-season opponent to score 50 points or more. With an overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10, the 49ers’ undefeated record was shattered, and they now have an 8–1 record. They went on to defeat the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, and New Orleans Saints, while losing a last-second field goal to the Baltimore Ravens, dropping them to 11–2.

Following that, the 49ers were defeated by the Atlanta Falcons in the final seconds of their following game.  The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 34–31 to improve to 12–3 and knock the Rams out of playoff contention. The 49ers won the NFC West and the number one seed for the first time since 1997 on December 29, 2019, when they defeated the Seahawks 26–21 in Week 17 of the regular season.

They dominated the Minnesota Vikings in their first playoff game since 2013, winning 27–10 in front of their home crowd. This win qualified them for the NFC Championship game, which they played against the Green Bay Packers at Levi’s Stadium. They defeated the Packers 37–20 on January 19, 2020, advancing to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012.

The 49ers also made history by being the first team to reach the Super Bowl after four seasons of losing 10 games or more. The 49ers led the Kansas City Chiefs 20–10 with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV, but lost the game 31–20, giving the Chiefs their first championship since 1969.

The San Francisco 49ers acquired the No. 12 overall pick, a third-round pick in 2022, a first-round pick in 2022, and a first-round pick in 2023 from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Trey Lance of North Dakota State was selected by the 49ers. Trey Lance was Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup quarterback in 2021, and he started two games.

In 2021, Garoppolo was paid $25 million and had a no-trade clause. Aaron Banks of Notre Dame was the 49ers’ second-round selection. In the third round, the 49ers selected Ohio State running back Trey Sermon, who provides much-needed depth at the position. CB Ambry Thomas of Michigan was the 102nd overall pick in the third round.

The 49ers commemorated their 49th anniversary in 1996 by creating a jersey patch based on the previous shield-crest logo. The team also launched a new uniform design, which included changing the colour of their jerseys from brilliant scarlet to a darker, cardinal red, as well as adding a black dropshadow effect (along with gold trim) to the jersey numerals (which remained in the blocked serif style).

The Niners wore white pants full-time for the 1996 season (also for the 1997 season and the 1998 preseason), although the pant stripes were slightly thicker and the colours were reversed to black-cardinal red-black, as they had been for the 1994 season (matching the striping on the helmets). The club moved back to gold pants for the 1998 regular-season opening, this time in a more metallic gold than the previous beige-matte gold.

The side striping remained black-cardinal red-black, but a thin gold trim was added, as well as additional oval “SF” badges on both sides of the hip. Until the completion of the 2008 season, the team’s normal outfits consisted of the 1996 helmet and jersey design with the 1998 gold pants. In 2009, the 49ers switched uniforms once more, this time with a design that is extremely similar to the old look but with a few key differences.

To accommodate new jerseys’ even shorter sleeves, the sleeve stripes are now arranged at an angle (though the stripes appear straight and parallel to the ground when worn by the players themselves).  On April 3, 2012, Nike revealed (together with the rest of the NFL clubs) a revamped 49ers uniform with enhanced fit and more breathable and moisture-resistant textiles.

The squad debuted their first ever alternate uniform on April 30, 2015, at their NFL Draft celebration (as opposed to a throwback design). Black jerseys and pants with red numerals and striping serve as the team’s uniform. The Nike emblems are gold, and the socks are solid red. According to league rules, these uniforms can only be worn two times per year.

The 49ers debuted a new alternate uniform in 2018, replacing their all-black alternates with an all-white version. It was designed in the 1994 style, with larger letters and numerals and more pronounced shadows on the letters and numerals. The helmets were solid gold, but the old 49ers logo was applied to them (no striping and shadows). They usually don the uniforms on Alumni Day once a season.

The 49ers did, however, wear the uniform once on the road in 2019, when they played Seattle in the week 17 finale. They even tried to convince the NFL to let them wear them at Super Bowl LIV, but their request was denied. The NFL stated that the clubs’ patched uniforms were already on the market.

The 49ers debuted a red version of the 1994 throwback uniforms in 2021 for certain home games, with the white version now being worn solely on the road. When the Raiders were based in Oakland, they were geographical rivals of the 49ers. As a result, the “Battle of the Bay” became a nickname for games between the two teams.

The NFL 49ers defeated the AFL Raiders 13–10 in the inaugural exhibition game, which was played in 1967. The 49ers triumphed 38–7 in Oakland following the 1970 merger. When the Raiders relocated to Los Angeles, many Raider supporters in Northern California were enraged by the transfer, and some became 49er fans, compounding the rivalry between Northern and Southern California.

In San Francisco in 1982, the Raiders shocked the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers, winning 23–17. Regular-season meetings are at least every four years because the two teams play in different leagues. Jim Plunkett, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Michael Crabtree, Tom Rathman, and Charlie Garner are among the players who have played for both clubs.

7–7 was the final score in the Battle of the Bay. On November 1, 2018, San Francisco defeated Washington 34–3.The pre-season game between the rivals was marred by fighting in the toilets and stands at Candlestick Park on August 20, 2011, in the third week of the pre-season, including a shooting outside the stadium that injured multiple people. All preseason games between the Raiders and the 49ers have been cancelled by the NFL. a
