Saquon Barkley ( born February 9, 1997) is an NFL running back for the New York Giants (NFL). He was a three-year starter at Penn State in college football.During his three-year collegiate career, he totaled 5,557 all-purpose yards. Barkley drew global notice after finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting with 304 total votes and third in the Maxwell Award voting. He also garnered numerous national and Big Ten Conference honours and awards. During his three years at Penn State, Barkley set and broke multiple milestones, including the most running touchdowns in a career, the most rushing yards by a freshman and sophomore, and the most total yards in a single game. The Giants took Barkley second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Barkley broke multiple league and franchise records his route to a 1,300-yard rushing season as a rookie. He was voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and was selected for the Pro Bowl. Barkley would suffer a series of injuries over the next two years, missing the entirety of the 2020 season after tearing his ACL against the Chicago Bears in Week 2. Barkley is a New Yorker who was born in the Bronx. He grew up idolising Curtis Martin, the running back for the New York Jets. Barkley’s family was known for their athletic prowess.

Barkley’s father, Alibay, was a professional boxer, while his brother, Alibay Jr., was a star baseball player at George Washington High School in New York City who was recruited by the Los Angeles Angels. Barkley’s uncle, Iran Barkley, was also a professional boxer. Barkley and his family relocated to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, when he was a child in search of a safer and more suburban setting. Barkley went at Whitehall High School, which is part of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and is located in Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania.


From his sophomore to senior years at Whitehall, Barkley carried for 3,646 yards and 63 touchdowns, including 1,856 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior. Barkley was a four-star recruit who committed to play college football at Penn State. He was previously committed to Rutgers before changing his mind and enrolling at Penn State.Barkley saw action as a true freshman at Penn State in 2015.In his second game, after rushing for one yard on one carry in his first, he rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown.

In his third game, he ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.  He missed two games in October owing to injury. He carried for 194 yards on 26 runs in his return game against No. 1 Ohio State.During the 2015 Penn State football season, Barkley had 182 carries for 1,076 yards and seven touchdowns. During the offseason, Barkley was lauded for his outstanding rookie season. He received second-team All-Big Ten honours (despite receiving votes for the first team) and Freshman of the Year honours.

Barkley racked up 358 all-purpose yards in the 21–19 victory. He also set a programme record for all-purpose yards in a single game, with 211 yards rushing, a rushing touchdown, 94 receiving yards, and 53 kick return yards.

Barkley was selected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week once again for his efforts. Barkley ran the ball 20 times for 56 yards in his first Big Ten home game of his junior season against the Indiana Hoosiers, a disappointing rushing day for him. Despite this, he had a big game, returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score, receiving four catches for 52 yards, and tossing a 16-yard pass to receiver DaeSean Hamilton late in the fourth quarter to seal the 45–14 win. Barkley became the first player in Big Ten history to score a return touchdown as well as a passing touchdown in the same game.

Barkley was selected the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts. Barkley returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score against Ohio State a month later, but was limited for the rest of the game, rushing for 44 yards on 21 carries, 36 of which came on a touchdown run in the second quarter. Barkley rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns in his final collegiate game, one of which was a 92-yard run to put Penn State up 28–7 over the Washington Huskies in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl. Penn State went on to win the game by a score of 35–28.  Barkley announced his plans to join the 2018 NFL Draft on December 31, 2017, one day after the team’s Fiesta Bowl victory.
