On May 25, 2011, he became the eighth winner of American Idol.Clear as Day, his debut studio album, was certified platinum in the United States when it was released in October 2011. “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble with Girls” are among the album’s top 20 country tracks.

Christmas with Scotty McCreery, McCreery’s Christmas album, was certified gold in October of 2012. In October of 2013, he dropped his third album, See You Tonight. The album’s title track earned his first top ten country single on Billboard. With his track “Five More Minutes,” which topped Billboard in February 2018, McCreery became the first country music artist in Country Aircheck/Mediabase history to chart a song without the assistance of a record company.

Seasons Change, McCreery’s fourth album, was released in March 2018 and quickly achieved his fourth top ten album in the US. On September 17, 2021, he released Same Truck, his most recent album. Judy and Michael McCreery gave birth to McCreery on October 9, 1993, in Garner, North Carolina.  His parents had planned to name him Evan at first, but changed their minds while driving to the hospita.

McCreery is half-Puerto Rican; his father, a Schneider Electric manufacturing systems analyst, was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to a military father and a Puerto Rican mother from San Juan, who eventually migrated to Aberdeen, North Carolina.  McCreery’s mother works for Fonville Morisey as a real estate agent. In Clayton, North Carolina, she also operates a tanning shop. Ashley McCreery, McCreery’s older sister, is a UNC Charlotte graduate.

They grew up in Garner, North Carolina. McCreery’s grandmother gave him an Elvis Presley book when he was approximately five or six years old, and Elvis was his first musical influence. When he was nine or ten years old, he began learning the guitar. McCreery went to Garner Magnet High School, Garner Magnet Elementary School, and Apex’s West Lake Middle School.

He was a member of the choruses at all three schools, and sang during his middle school graduation. He was selected Rookie of the Year as a freshman in high school singing tenor. He began singing in his church in his second year, switching to bass singing. In the same year, he also played Conrad Birdie in a school performance of Bye Bye Birdie.  McCreery afterwards joined the Die Meistersingers, a singing ensemble founded by his high school chorus instructor, Meredith Clayton, with whom he toured the United States.

McCreery sang “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack as his second Hollywood Week solo performance. He had forgotten the lyrics onstage since he didn’t know them. He then stated that he did not believe he deserved to compete further. After a well-received performance of Josh Turner’s “Long Black Train,” the judges decided to give him another chance and chose him as one of the twenty-four contestants who would advance to the voting stages of the competition.

Although one of his most recognised performances was of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” McCreery did not stray far from the country genre during the competition. Following the success of season eight champion Kris Allen’s stripped-down version of the rap song “Heartless,” McCreery contemplated doing an acoustic version of a hip-hop or R&B song, such as Ne-“So Yo’s Sick” or something by Charlie Wilson.

Instead, he chose “Gone,” a country tune with rap-like cadences by Montgomery Gentry. Some considered it to be his best finals performance. McCreery and the other finalists who made it to the Top 3 had congratulatory trips to their hometowns. Back in Garner, McCreery played for an audience of roughly 30,000 people at Lake Benson Park, delivered the first pitch in a baseball game between the North Carolina State Wolfpack and the Florida State Seminoles, and attended his high school’s prom.

Gary Epperson, his guitar teacher, and Gavinhart, Epperson’s band, were among others that joined him. While McCreery was performing Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” Turner appeared onstage and startled McCreery. McCreery appeared in the finale with Lauren Alaina, a fellow country singer with whom he had previously performed duets during the season.

In the series’ history, this was the series’ youngest match-up. McCreery had turned seventeen since auditioning and Alaina was sixteen at the time.  After Jordin Sparks, who was seventeen when she won in season six, he went on to become the series’ youngest male champion and the second youngest overall winner. McCreery had to live with one of his parents during the tournament because of his age; usually his mother. They shared a mansion with the other candidates for a while, but before the series ended, they moved into their own apartment.
