Seattle Sounders FC is a professional soccer team headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The Seattle Sounders play in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference (MLS). The club was founded on November 13, 2007, and debuted as an MLS expansion franchise in 2009.

Adrian Hanauer is the club’s principal owner, while the estates of Paul Allen and Drew Carey, as well as 14 families from the Seattle region, are minority shareholders. After the departure of Sigi Schmid, former USL Sounders coach and assistant coach Brian Schmetzer took over as head coach in July 2016.

Lumen Field, where the Sounders play their home league matches, has a limited capacity of 37,722 seats for most fixtures. A 53-member marching band named “Sound Wave” supports the team during each home match, along with many organised organisations. Seattle has long-standing rivalry with Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with whom it plays for the Cascadia Cup.

The Sounders made their debut on March 19, 2009, defeating the New York Red Bulls 3–0. Seattle has won the US Open Cup four times, the Supporters’ Shield once, and the MLS Cup twice, in 2016 and 2019. In each of its 12 seasons, the club has qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs and has participated in the CONCACAF Champions League five times, reaching the semi-finals once. Seattle was considered a suitable destination for a professional club even before the first cities in the United States were picked to host Major League Soccer franchises.  In 1994, as the United States prepared to host the FIFA World Cup, more than 30 towns vied for the rights to an MLS franchise, with Seattle among them. . Cities vying for a first MLS club were also asked to collect 10,000 season ticket commitments from fans.  By the deadline for MLS club proposals on June 3, 1994, Seattle organisers had acquired less than 1,500 such commitments. The low numbers were due to competition between the MLS expansion team ticket drive and the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) Sounders expansion team.

Adrian Hanauer, then-owner of the USL Sounders (previously the APSL Sounders), was in talks with MLS about a $1 million payment to win the rights to a Seattle club for 2006.

Hanauer joined up with Hollywood producer Joe Roth in 2007 to attempt another $30 million proposal for MLS expansion into Seattle.  That same year, Paul Allen, whose First and Goal firm ran Qwest Field (now Lumen Field), joined the ownership group, making the proposal the most promising for Seattle yet.

During the first week of November 2007, reports started to circulate that the Major League Soccer (MLS) would announce an expansion into Seattle the following week, and that the ownership group had added a fourth member, TV celebrity Drew Carey.  On November 13, 2007, a news conference was held to announce that Seattle had been granted an expansion franchise. The news heralded the return of top-level soccer to Seattle for the first time since its North American Soccer League (NASL) franchise was dissolved in 1983. The Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division will likewise play their last season the year before the new MLS team was founded, according to the statement.

In a presentation conducted at the Space Needle on April 7, 2008, the club name “Seattle Sounders FC” was unveiled, along with the official logo, colours, and badge design.Sigi Schmid was unveiled as the club’s inaugural head coach on December 16, 2008, after his departure from the Columbus Crew following their MLS Cup triumph.

The Seattle Sounders FC, the league’s 15th franchise, debuted in 2009. The team sold all 22,000 season ticket packages it offered for their debut season,[22] giving them the most season ticket holders in MLS. on March 19, 2009, the team played their first home match in front of a sold-out crowd of 32,523, beating the New York Red Bulls 3–0.  The inaugural Golden Scarf was presented to MLS Commissioner Don Garber at the pre-match ceremony.  Seattle was the first MLS expansion club to win its first three games, all of which were shutouts.

On August 5, 2009, the club set a state record for attendance at a soccer match when 66,848 fans attended a friendly match with FC Barcelona, a record that was later broken when they hosted Manchester United in front of 67,052 fans[28] and later in the 2019 MLS Cup against Toronto FC with 69,274 in attendance.

The Sounders became the second MLS expansion club in league history (Chicago being the first) to win the US Open Cup event in their inaugural season on September 2, 2009.

They accomplished it by beating D.C. United 2–1 at RFK Stadium on the road. They qualified for the preliminary stage of the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League by winning the U.S. Open Cup.

The Sounders became the third MLS expansion club in league history to qualify for the playoffs in their inaugural season on October 17, 2009. They secured a postseason spot with a 3–2 win against the Kansas City Wizards in Kansas City.  Seattle concluded the regular season with a 12-win, 7-loss, and 11-draw record.

With 30,943 people each match, the team established a new MLS record for average attendance.  In the 2009 MLS Cup Playoffs, it was eliminated in the conference semifinals by the Houston Dynamo by a 1–0 aggregate score in a two-leg series.During the 2009 season, the Sounders’ 15 MLS regular season home matches, home playoff match, and four home US Open Cup matches (all played at Starfire Sports Complex) were all sold out.

As with a heraldic shield, the badge design is comprised of two layers, which reflect . It is incorporated into the emblem by the Space Needle, a Seattle icon that is worldwide recognisable. The official team colours are Sounder Blue, which represents the seas of Puget Sound; Rave Green, which represents the woods of the Pacific Northwest; and Cascade Shale, which represents the Cascade Range, which is to the east of the city of Seattle.

A name for the squad was chosen by fans in an online vote that took place between March 27 and March 31, 2008. The Seattle Sounders were intentionally left off of the first list of choices, which included Seattle FC, Seattle Republic, and Seattle Alliance, in order to give the process a new start. Despite the fact that the names were chosen via fan surveys and internal committees, the exclusion of the traditional Sounders moniker was met with displeasure by many in the Seattle soccer community.

After receiving negative feedback, the team introduced a fourth write-in option for the team name, which allows for any name to be offered on the vote.

More than 14,500 votes were cast in the process of selecting the new club name, and 49 percent of those votes featured some variation of the word “Sounders.”   As soon as he announced the name of the club, Hanauer recognised the importance of adhering to tradition: “The Sounders have always been the name of the team that represents our area at the highest level of competition.

Starting with the NASL and subsequently the USL 1st Division, we now have the opportunity to establish an unique and independent identity with the new Major League Soccer franchise.” In the beginning, the NASL team was named via a public contest, with the “Sounders” being declared as the winner on January 22, 1974.

On May 28, 2008, the team’s ownership unveiled the first Sounders shirt and announced that Microsoft will become the team’s official sponsor in a five-year contract worth roughly $20 million dollars.

According to the arrangement, Xbox branding featured on the front of Sounders’ jerseys and around the stadium, first for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, but subsequently for the Xbox One, which was eventually replaced with the Microsoft Store (simply shown as “XBOX”).

Despite the fact that the team hired a consultant to look into other jersey partnerships in 2012, the Microsoft sponsorship was repeatedly extended, with a one-year contract in 2013, for the following season, and 2014, which was extended again in 2015 and will continue through the end of the 2016 season.In the wake of reports that Emirates was interested in a sponsorship as part of their marketing effort in Seattle, the second extension was announced.  Multiple revisions have been made to the jersey in order to include advertising for Xbox titles such as Halo 5 and Gears of War 4.

The Sounders signed a partnership with the talent agency WME-IMG in 2017 to investigate new jersey sponsorship and other advertising options, which came just before the team’s contract with Microsoft expired.

A multiyear jersey sponsorship agreement with Seattle-based online store Zulily was revealed on January 17, 2019, for an unknown sum. Zulily is an internet retailer situated in Seattle. Zulily also took over sponsorship of the NWSL’s Seattle Reign, however the arrangement did not include name rights to CenturyLink Field, which is where the Seattle Reign play.  It was revealed in July 2020 that WaFd Bank will be the club’s first sleeve patch sponsor, just before of the MLS is Back Tournament.  As part of a multi-year relationship with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the Sounders announced a sponsorship of the right sleeve on all team uniforms, with the Emerald Queen Casino sponsoring main uniforms and the tribe’s symbol sponsoring secondary uniforms.
