Selena Marie Gomez (/slin omz/ s-LEE-n GOH-mez) is an American singer, actress, and producer who was born on July 22, 1992. Gomez, who was born and reared in Texas, got her start in the children’s television series Barney & Friends (2002–2004). She rose to fame as Alex Russo in the Disney Channel television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012).

As Gomez put it, “I was angry that my parents weren’t together, and I never saw the light at the end of the tunnel, where my mother was trying hard to give me a better life. If I’d stayed [in Texas], I’m frightened of who I would have become.”  Later, she remarked, “Around me, [my mother] was quite forceful. Having me at the age of 16 must have been a huge responsibility. She worked three jobs to support me and even put her life on the line for me.”

As a child, Gomez had a close bond with her grandparents and competed in several pageants. Her grandparents frequently looked after her while her parents finished their education, and she even claimed that they “raised her” until she achieved fame in show business. Gomez released “Lose You to Love Me” as the debut single from her third studio album, Rare, on October 23, 2019.

The next day, she dropped the album’s second single, “Look at Her Now,” as a surprise.  “Lose You to Love Me” became Gomez’s first number-one single in the United States, rocketing from number 15 to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the November 9, 2019 issue. Rare premiered at number one on the Billboard 200 on January 10, 2020, to positive critical acclaim[226][227] and became her third consecutive number-one album.

Later same month, she appeared as a giraffe in Stephen Gaghan’s adventure film Dolittle, in which she voiced a giraffe. Gomez stated in May that she would host and executive produce the HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef, in which she will be joined by a different chef each episode due to the COVID-19 epidemic.


Every episode focuses on a different food-related charity.  On August 13, 2020, the show aired for the first time. Gomez was included on a remix of Trevor Daniel’s “Past Life” in June. In August, Gomez and South Korean girl duo Blackpink collaborated on “Ice Cream,” the second single from Blackpink’s debut Korean-language studio album, The Album.

Later same month, Gomez was cast in and executive produced the comedy series Only Murders in the Building opposite Steve Martin and Martin Short, marking her first scripted television appearance since Wizards of Waverly Place. Gomez stated in August 2021, prior of the series’ official launch on Hulu, that she was pleased to have played a character who matched her current age, claiming that she “signed [her] life away” to Disney at the outset of her career and “did not realise what she was doing.” She was named to Time’s list of the world’s most influential people in September 2020.
