Snoop Dogg (formerly Snoop Doggy Dogg and briefly Snoop Lion) is an American rapper, songwriter, media personality, actor, and entrepreneur who was born on October 20, 1971. Dr. Dre’s debut solo single, “Deep Cover,” and Dre’s debut solo album, The Chronic, catapulted him to popularity in 1992. Since then, Broadus has sold over 23 million records in the United States and 35 million internationally.

Broadus’ first solo album, Doggystyle, was released by Death Row Records in November 1993 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It was produced by Dr. Dre. Doggystyle was certified quadruple-platinum in 1994 after selling 800,000 copies in its first week and included smash singles such as “What’s My Name?” and “Gin & Juice.” Broadus’ soundtrack for the short film Murder Was the Case, featuring Snoop Dogg, was published in 1994 by Death Row Records.

With “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” as the first single, his second album, Tha Doggfather, debuted at number one on both charts in 1996. The album achieved double-platinum status the following year.Broadus signed with No Limit Records after leaving Death Row Records in January 1998, and released three Snoop albums for the label: Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999), and Tha Last Meal (2001). (2000).

Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss was released in 2002 by Priority/Capitol/EMI Records. He signed with Geffen Records in 2004 and released R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, and Ego Trippin’, his following three albums. Malice ‘n Wonderland was released in 2009 by Priority Records, while Doggumentary was released in 2011. Snoop Dogg has starred in films and hosted TV shows such as Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, and Dogg After Dark, among others.

He also coaches a high-school football team and a kids football league. He was appointed head of a revitalised Priority Records by EMI in September 2009. Broadus declared his Rastafari conversion and new moniker, Snoop Lion, in 2012, following a vacation to Jamaica. In early 2013, as Snoop Lion, he released Reincarnated, a reggae album, as well as a documentary film of the same name about his Jamaican experience.


Bush, his 13th studio album, was released in May 2015, and it signified the comeback of Snoop Dogg’s moniker. In July 2016, he released his 14th solo studio album, Coolaid. Snoop Dogg has been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards but has yet to win one. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame’s celebrity wing in March 2016, the night before WrestleMania 32 in Arlington, Texas, after appearing for the organisation on multiple occasions, notably as master of ceremonies before a match at WrestleMania XXIV.

Snoop released his first gospel album, Bible of Love, in 2018, after announcing that he was a “born-again Christian.”  Snoop Dogg was honoured with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on November 19, 2018. In 2019, he dropped I Wanna Thank Me, his sixteenth solo album. Snoop Dogg purchased Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group (previously known as eOne Music) in 2022 and released BODR, his 20th studio album.

Vernell

Varnado and Beverly Tate gave birth to Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California.  Because his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. (1948–1985), was a Vietnam War soldier, musician, and mail carrier, Vernell was named after him.  His father was rarely present in his life. Due to his affinity and resemblance to the cartoon character from Peanuts, his parents nicknamed him “Snoopy” as a child.

 

His mother had three sons, and he was the second of them. In 1975, his stepfather and mother split.  At the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church, Broadus began singing and playing the piano when he was very young. He started rapping in 6th grade. Broadus used to help his family make ends meet by selling candies, delivering newspapers, and bagging groceries as a kid.

He was regarded as a hardworking student and a devout churchgoer who participated in chorus and football. Despite his mother’s efforts to keep him out of trouble, Broadus admitted in 1993 that he started involved in illegal activities and joining gangs when he was a teenager. Broadus used to rap in class all the time.

He reminisced, saying: “When I rapped in the school hallways, I drew such a large crowd that the principal mistook it for a fight. It convinced me that I possessed a talent. People seemed to enjoy my raps, which piqued my interest in myself.” Broadus got into a lot of legal trouble when he was a youngster. He was a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang in Long Beach’s Eastside neighborhood,yet he claimed in 1993 that he had never joined a gang, despite police and media claims to the contrary.

He was imprisoned for cocaine possession shortly after graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989, and spent the next three years in prison, including at Wayside Jail.  Snoop created homemade tapes with his two cousins, Nate Dogg and Lil’ 12 Dead, as well as friend Warren G, and dubbed the group 213 after the area code of their hometown of Long Beach at the time.

Snoop’s early solo freestyles over En Vogue’s “Hold On” appeared on a mixtape that happened to land in the hands of Dr. Dre, who was so taken with the sample that he invited Snoop to audition. Previously a member of the N.W.A. He learned how to organise his lyrics and divide them into verses, hooks, and choruses from the D.O.C. On March 16, 2018, he dropped his gospel album Bible of Love.


Snoop Dogg collaborated with Jamie Principle on the tune “Hollywood” off Gorillaz’s latest album The Now Now. Snoop Dogg announced his Puff Puff Pass tour in November 2018, which will feature Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Too $hort, Warren G, Kurupt, and others. From November 24 through January 5, the tour was in full swing.

Snoop Dogg was a marijuana plant in both the lyrics and animated video for Lil Dicky’s April 2019 single “Earth.”The Universal fire in 2008 destroyed the work of hundreds of artists, including Snoop Dogg.  Snoop Dogg’s title single off his upcoming 17th studio album, I Wanna Thank Me, was released on July 3, 2019.

On August 16, 2019, the album was released.In “Hy trao cho anh” (“Give it to Me”), Snoop Dogg partnered with Vietnamese artist Son Tung M-TP. The song video has 158 million views on YouTube as of October 3, 2019.Snoop’s tour in support of his I Wanna Thank You album and documentary was delayed in early 2020, according to reports. The tour will now begin in February of 2021.

 

Snoop’s collaboration with Banda Sinaloense de Sergio Lizarraga, “Que Maldicion,” peaked at number one on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 in May 2020. Snoop Dogg’s eighth studio album, From the Streets to the Suites, was released on April 20, 2021. It was revealed over Instagram on April 7, 2021. Critics praised the CD.

Snoop Dogg announced Algorithm during an interview with Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show on September 27. On November 19th, 2021, the album was released. Along with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg performed at the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show.

Snoop Dogg confirmed in January 2022 that his 19th studio album, BODR, would be released on the same day as his appearance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. The album’s release date was bumped up two days, to February 11, 2022. Snoop Dogg officially took over Death Row Records on February 10, 2022.

On June 12, 1997, Snoop married Shante Taylor, his high school sweetheart. He filed for divorce from Taylor on May 21, 2004, stating irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.  On January 12, 2008, however, the pair remarried.  They have three children together: Cordé (born August 21, 1994) and Cordell (born February 21, 1997), both of whom left sports to pursue a career as filmmakers, and Cori (born August 21, 1994). R&B artists Brandy and Ray J,as well as WWE pro wrestler Sasha Banks, are his first cousins.Snoop’s eldest son, Cordé Broadus, had a son with his girlfriend, Jessica Kyzer, in 2015, and Snoop became a grandfather. Kai, Cordé’s second son, died ten days after he was born on September 25, 2019.

Snoop Dogg has been an outspoken cannabis user since the beginning of his career, and it has been one of his trademarks. He proclaimed in 2002 that he was quitting up cannabis for good; however, this did not last long (a situation that was prominently addressed in the 2004 Adam Sandler film 50 First Dates), and by 2013, he claimed to be consuming about 80 cannabis blunts each day.


Since at least 2007, he has been a California medicinal cannabis patient for the treatment of migraines. Between a 2006 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Snoop said that in 2003 and 2004, he was a true professional pimp, unlike other hip hop artists who had superficially acquired the pimp persona, saying, “That nonsense was my natural calling, and once I got into it, it was enjoyable.For me, it was like if I were making layups. Every time, I was making them.”Snoop’s mother, Beverly Tate, passed away on October 24, 2021.
