The University of South Alabama Jaguars football team was founded in 2009 and competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). South Alabama hasn’t won more than six games since joining the FBS in 2012. South Alabama’s two-year transition from unclassified to Division I FBS status began in 2011 with the start of the 2011 season.

During the 2011 season, South was a Division I-FCS independent. After terminating its contracts with UC Davis and Edward Waters College early and replacing them with a game against Mississippi Valley State, the Jaguars only played 10 games in 2011. NCAA Division I-FBS, NCAA Division I-FCS, and NCAA Division II institutions were all represented on the 2011 schedule.

South Alabama had televised games for the first time. WJTC and ESPN3 broadcasted the 2011 season opener against West Alabama. On September 17, ESPN3 broadcast the Jaguars’ game against North Carolina State. The Jaguars had a 6–4 record at the end of the regular season.

The addition of football to the intercollegiate athletics programme was approved by the university’s Board of Trustees on December 6, 2007. The team began play in 2009, with a full move to Division I-A of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) scheduled for 2013.

President Gordon Moulton and Athletic Director Joe Gottfried introduced Joey Jones, the head football coach of Birmingham–Southern, as the university’s first head football coach on February 15, 2008. The team’s home games would be held at Ladd–Peebles Stadium, which it would occupy until Hancock Whitney Stadium opened in 2020.

The University of South Alabama Jaguars defeated Hargrave Military Academy 30–13 in front of more than 26,000 fans on September 5, 2009, in the program’s first ever game. With a combined score of 321–41, the team finished their inaugural season undefeated at 7–0.

The Jaguars played ten games in 2010, up from seven in 2009. The NCAA Division I-FCS, NCAA Division II, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and no Junior Colleges were all represented in the 2010 schedule.  With a cumulative score of 413-130, the squad went undefeated in its second season, finishing 10-0.

South Alabama’s journey to full Division I-FBS status ended after the 2012 season. The Jaguars began playing a full Sun Belt Conference schedule, but they were not eligible for the conference championship or post-season bowl games.

The

Jaguars were 1–4 in non-conference play, with their lone win coming against FCS foe Nicholls State. The Jaguars went 1-7 in the Sun Belt Conference, with their lone win coming against Florida Atlantic. The team came in second to last in the Sun Belt with a record of 2–11.

For the 2013–14 Sun Belt Conference season, the South Alabama Jaguars were upgraded to Division I FBS status. In addition, the Jaguars became eligible for the Sun Belt Championship and a postseason Bowl game. With a 6-6 record and a 4-2 record at home, the squad finished the year at.500. In Sun Belt Conference play, the Jaguars finished 4-3.

With a 6-6 record in 2014, the South Alabama Jaguars were bowl eligible for the second year in a row. President Tony Waldrop accepted an offer to play in the inaugural Raycom Media Camellia Bowl on behalf of the university and the football team on December 3rd.

This was South Alabama’s first-ever bowl game. South Alabama eclipsed Florida Atlantic’s record by becoming the youngest FBS team to make a bowl game in their fifth year of competition and their second year of bowl eligibility. The Jaguars and Bowling Green faced off in the first Camellia Bowl. South Alabama was defeated 33–28 in their first bowl game.

Joey Jones, the seventh-year head coach of the South Alabama Jaguars, took the club to Ladd–Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, where they played their home games. The Sun Belt Conference was where the Jaguars played. They concluded the season with a 5–7 overall record and a 3–5 Sun Belt record, tying for fifth place with five other teams.

South Alabama beat Mississippi State 21-20 on the opening weekend of the 2016 season for its first win over an SEC opponent.

It was also the United States’ first win over a Power 5 team. South Alabama defeated No. 19 San Diego State 42-24 for their first rated victory. After losing to Air Force in the Arizona Bowl, the Jaguars finished the season with a 6–7 record. Joey Jones stepped down as coach at the end of the 2017 season, it was announced on November 20, 2017.

Steve Campbell, the former head coach of Central Arkansas, was announced as the new South Alabama football coach on December 7, 2017. Campbell was the head coach at South Alabama for three seasons, going 3-9, 2-10, and 4-7. After a 29–0 loss against rival Troy, he was fired by the Jaguars at the end of the 2020 season, finishing with a 9–26 record.

Kane Wommack, the Jaguars’ next head coach, was announced on December 12, 2020. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Indiana and South Alabama. Wommack was 5-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play in his first season with the Jaguars. Since its founding in 2009, Ladd–Peebles Stadium has served as the home of the South Alabama Jaguars football team. In Mobile’s history, Ladd–Peebles has played a significant role.

On October 2, 1948, a college football game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Vanderbilt Commodores was the first event conducted inside the stadium, which was opened in 1948. The stadium is also known for being the venue of Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Bear Bryant’s first game in charge.

Ladd–Peebles has held a variety of different events, including concerts, boxing matches, and festivals, and now has a seating capacity of 40,000 (per Ladd Peebles stadium). On September 12, 2020, the South Alabama Jaguars hosted the Tulane Green Wave at their new 25,450-seat on-campus stadium, Hancock Whitney Stadium.

The 49,000-square-foot South Alabama Football Fieldhouse contains an 8,000-square-foot weight room. It was created with the goal of being both useful and appealing to recruiters. The fieldhouse also has a main foyer, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, equipment rooms, administrative offices, a training area with hot and cold baths and other medical needs, a team conference room, individual position meeting rooms, and a players lounge, in addition to the weight room.

The Jaguar Training Center (JTC) in South Alabama opened on August 3, 2018, and is the state’s largest covered practise facility. The University had organised a multimillion-dollar initiative.  A full-size regulation football field, a 15-yard practise area, and regulation field goal posts at each end are all included in the 65-foot tall stadium.

The JTC collapsed in July 2017 due to “inadequate bracing,” and work was halted until January 2018, when it resumed. Following the death of running back Anthony Mostella in South Alabama’s second season, Coach Joey Jones began a custom of selecting a senior who “deserved it” to wear Mostella’s number 5 jersey for the remainder of the season.

Mostella was a popular favourite, noted for his leadership and dedication to his profession. Coach Joey Jones wanted to honour Mostella by awarding his #5 jersey to a senior each season who exemplified the same leadership qualities and work ethic as Mostella. Homecoming was formally moved to the fall, where it had traditionally supported the school’s varsity basketball team, with the formation of the football team.

In 2006, an attempt by university students to inspire a grassroots movement for NCAA football support resulted in a single night of temporary and non-destructive vandalism around campus termed “viva la resistance” by the organising students. Homecoming has featured an event known as “junk the jungle,” in which toilet paper and streamers are used to cover all of the trees in the school’s central traffic circle since the Jaguar football team’s inception.

Because this is identical to one of the acts committed by those student pranksters, it can only be assumed[by whom?] that this is being done in remembrance of them. Other acts that night included writing statements such as “NCAA football,” “We Want Football,” and drawing images of footballs on the sidewalks and windows of numerous campus buildings and walkways with sidewalk chalk and window painting.

The letters “NCAA” were spray painted in enormous fonts on the school’s track field as well. Individual pranks were carried out by small groups, with the culminating act, “junking the jungle,” involving all of the kids who had been invited to take part.
