The football team of the University of South Florida is the South Florida Bulls. The Bulls joined the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1997 and compete in the American Athletic Conference (The American) (NCAA). Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, serves as the team’s home venue. The Bulls racked up 680 yards of offence in this game, which was the second-highest total in team history and the most against an FBS opponent.

USF is off to their greatest start (7–0) in programme history with this victory.

Quinton Flowers was named a Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award finalist on November 2nd. Quinton Flowers beat Matt Grothe to become the Bulls’ all-time total yardage leader during the Bulls’ Week 13 game against rival UCF. He also set single-game marks for passing yards (503) and total yards (509) in the same contest (605). The Bulls finished the regular season in second place in the American East division after a loss to No. 13 UCF, and they finished the season with a 38–34 win over Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl, giving them a 10–2 record.

Former Texas and Louisville head coach Charlie Strong was named the Bulls’ new head coach on December 11, 2016, making him the fourth in school history. Strong signed a five-year contract that will keep him in Tampa until 2021.  Strong was hired in part due of his professional and recruiting links to Florida, where he worked as an assistant coach for almost a decade at the University of Florida.

[55] The Bulls set school records for rushing attempts (74) and total plays (101) in a single game in their Week 1 matchup against San Jose State. The Bulls defeated Illinois 47–23 on September 15 to record their first Big Ten victory. RB Jordan Cronkrite established both USF and the American Athletic Conference records for rushing yards in a game during the Bulls’ Week 6 game against UMass, rushing for 302 yards. Coach Strong was named to the watch list for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award on October 16. The Bulls would lose their next five games to finish the regular season 7–5, after starting the season 7–0, tying for the best start in school history.


The Bulls were selected to participate in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl versus Marshall despite a disappointing regular season finish. With 165 receiving yards in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, wide receiver Randall St. Felix set two records: one for most yards in a USF bowl game, and the other for most yards in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl.

Coach Strong’s third season was a struggle for the Bulls, who finished 4–8 (2–6 in the American). Two days after losing 34–7 against Central Florida, Strong was fired on December 1, 2019. Jeff Scott was named the fifth head coach of the USF football team on December 9, 2019.  Scott was previously the co-offensive coordinator at Clemson, where he led the Tigers to two College Football Playoff national championships in 2016 and 2018, as well as a berth in the 2019 championship game.

In Week 3 of Scott’s first season, the Bulls lost 52–0 against No. 7 Notre Dame in South Bend, their worst loss in programme history.The team concluded the 2021 season with a 1–8 record after three games were cancelled due to COVID-19.The Bulls started the 2021 season 0–2 with losses to No. 25 NC State and No. 13 Florida, but they ended their 10-game losing streak with a 38–17 victory over Florida A&M. After defeating Temple 34–14 on October 23, the squad became the first in the Jeff Scott era to win a game against an FBS opponent.

With a 2–10 record, the squad concluded the 2021 season.Coach Scott fired defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer before the season’s final game, and within a few weeks, he hired Miami defensive analyst Bob Shoop as his successor. Brian Battie, a sophomore running back, was named to multiple First Team All-America teams following the regular season, joining George Selvie as the only two Bulls to get First Team honours from two of the five major All-America organisations.

Coach Scott published the first-ever transfer portal rankings with the best transfer class that summer.During their first season in 1997 and the first two games of the 1998 season, the Bulls played their home games at Tampa Stadium, which was also home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before moving to the freshly finished Raymond James Stadium, which was located across the street from their previous home. On October 3, 1998, the Bulls beat The Citadel 45–6 in their first game in Raymond James Stadium.

The upper sections were rarely used during USF games from 1998 to 2007, although the bottom sections could accommodate 41,441 people.The No. 18 Bulls faced the No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers in front of 67,012 fans on September 28, 2007, which remained the biggest USF home game crowd until September 29, 2012, when the Bulls played the Florida State Seminoles in front of 69,383 fans.

The Bulls had a 99–53 home record and a 91–51 record in Raymond James Stadium as of the end of the 2020 season, including a 21-game winning streak at home (11/6/1999–10/10/2003). The Bulls are 22–3 in home openers as of the 2021 season, with their two defeats coming to McNeese State in 2013, Wisconsin in 2019, and Florida in 2021.

USF authorities said in August 2017 that they were looking into possible locations for a 40,000-50,000-seat on-campus stadium.USF administrators and the board of trustees showed increased interest in an on-campus stadium in 2021, and interim president Rhea Law made it a top priority.

The Frank Morsani Football Practice Complex, officially opened in 2011, is where the team practises on campus.The institution started building an indoor practise facility in September 2021, and it is slated to be finished in summer 2022. The rivalry with in-state rival UCF began in 2005 with a game that has been played every year since 2013. The rivalry has sparked significant debate and fan excitement throughout the 1990s, but games were not scheduled until 2005.


Through 2008, the two schools competed in a home-and-away series. USF won all four games in front of large crowds, but the school decided not to schedule any more. When UCF joined the American in 2013, the matchup was reinstated as an annual conference game.  By the 2021 season, the Knights had a 7–6 series lead. WDAE 95.3 FM/620 AM, the flagship station of USF, broadcasts football games in the Bay Area.
