Stephen Chow was born on June 22, 1962, in British Hong Kong. He was born to Ling Po Yee, a Guangzhou Normal University alumna, and Chow Yik Sheung, a Zhejiang immigrant. Chow has two sisters: Chow Man Kei, who is older, and Chow Sing Ha, who is younger. Chow’s given name “Sing-chi” comes from the essay Preface to the Prince of Teng’s Pavilion by Tang dynasty Chinese poet Wang Bo.

Chow went to Heep Woh Primary School, a missionary school in Prince Edward Road, Kowloon Peninsula, run by the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China. He was inspired to become a martial artist after seeing Bruce Lee’s film The Big Boss when he was nine years old. Chow enrolled in San Marino Secondary School, where he was a classmate of Lee Kin-yan. He was admitted into TVB’s acting classes after graduation.

Chow’s popularity rose, and he was soon cast in other television roles. He starred in a number of television shows, often in dramatic roles. He has appeared in a few films as a supporting actor. Chow established himself as a comedy star with his first starring role in 1990’s All for the Winner, a spoof of director-actor Chow Yun Fat’s God of the Gambler.

He followed up All for the Winner with a series of films that quickly drew in large audiences not just in Hong Kong, but also in other Asian countries. Chow continued to parody films, including one based on Bruce Lee’s Fists of Fury. With 1994’s From Beijing With Love, he also made his directorial debut, satirising James Bond films.

Chow’s list of box-office hits expanded, and he soon surpassed a number of Asian actors, including Chan and Li, in terms of earnings. These two actors, on the other hand, became well-known among international audiences, especially in the United States. With films like Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, Chan established himself as a major Hollywood player. Li branched out with a part in the critically acclaimed Lethal Weapon 4. Following that, he starred in a variety of films, including Romeo Must Die, The One, and Hero.

Chow’s inability to cross over was attributed to “mou lei tau,” which translates to “nonsense” or “meaningless speaking.” Mou lei tau are “action films combined with slapstick humour, in which the actors would often converse in a seemingly nonsensical tongue that was a bizarre blend of Monty Python-speak and Shakespearean rhyming couplets,” according to Kaleem Aftab of the Independent. In addition to mou lei tau, Chow’s parodies included a variety of pop culture references that were only understood by Hong Kong and/or Asian viewers.

Chow kept going forward and attempted to relocate to Canada. He was turned down because of his links to The Triads, Hong Kong’s version of the Mafia. Chow denied any links to the group and vowed to keep making movies in Hong Kong. With God of Cookery and Forbidden City Cop, he started writing his films and continued to have box office success. In one year, his films accounted for four of the top five grossing films. Chow’s next few films, however, were flops, and many believed he was on the decline.

Chow eventually realised his dream of presenting his films to a global audience. At the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards, Kung Fu Hustle was named Best Film. In addition, Chow has started work on a sequel to Kung Fu Hustle. Chow will continue to dazzle foreign audiences for years to come, owing to frequent similarities to actor/director Charlie Chaplin.
